103 die as boat capsizes in Assam; 200 missing

Dhubri, May 1: In one of the worst midstream tragedies in Assam, around 103 people died and 200 missing after a steamer with over 300 passengers on board capsized in the Brahmaputra river here on Monday.

Deputy Commissioner Kumud Chandra Kalita said the bodies of 103 victims, including women and children, were recovered by the BSF and the National Disaster Force personnel near Jaleswar. He said about 25 people swam to safety after the double-decked ferry, while crossing the river from Dhubrighat, was caught in a storm and capsized around 4:20 pm.

The bodies of the victims were kept at Dhubri Civil Hospital, Kalita said. The fate of the remaining passengers was not immediately known. The steamer had left the Dhubri ferry ghat for Medartary in the south bank of the district in the evening.

The Army, BSF’s water wing, National Disaster Force and police armed with mechanised boats have launched a massive rescue operation in the river but darkness and inclement weather have hindered rescue operations.

President Pratibha Patil expressed grief over the mishap while Prime Minister Manmohan Singh spoke to Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi to convey his condolences. Singh assured the state government of “all possible assistance in relief operations and also for assistance from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund to the families of the deceased,” said a statement issued by PMO.

New Delhi, May 12: With 3,604 more COVID-19 cases reported in the last 24 hours, India's tally of coronavirus cases reached 70,756, said the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Tuesday. 87 deaths were reported during the period.

As per the tally, 46,008 patients are active coronavirus cases while 22,454 patients have been cured/discharged and one patient has migrated.

With 87 deaths due to COVID-19 reported in the last 24 hours, the number of deaths has risen to 2,293.

As per the ministry, Maharashtra has the most number of coronavirus cases with 23,401 cases with 4,786 patients being cured/discharged while 868 deaths have been reported in the state.

Gujarat is second on the list with 8,541 cases that include 2,780 patients recovering from the disease and 513 fatalities.

Tamil Nadu's tally reached 8,002 cases, including 2,051 recoveries and 53 deaths.

While Delhi's tally stands at 7,233 cases with 2,129 patients recovered and 73 deaths.

Meanwhile; Mizoram (one case reported--now recovered), Goa (seven cases reported and all seven recovered), Manipur (Two cases reported and both patients recovered) and Arunachal Pradesh (one case reported--now recovered) have reported no new cases in the last 24 hours.

New Delhi, Jun 1: The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on Monday asked airlines to allot seats in flights in such a manner that middle seats are kept vacant to the extent possible.

However, if a flyer has been allotted the middle seat due to a high passenger load "then additional protective equipment like the wrap-around gown of the Ministry of Textile approved standards" must be provided to that passenger in addition to three-layered face mask and face shield, said the DGCA order, which has been accessed by news agency.

India resumed its domestic passenger flights from May 25 after a gap of two months due to the coronavirus-triggered lockdown. International commercial passenger flights continue to remain suspended in the country.

Tirupur, Feb 20: Nineteen people died in a collision between a Kerala State Road Transport Corporation bus and a truck near Avinashi town of Tirupur district on Thursday morning here.

The bus was on its way to Ernakulam in Kerala from Bengaluru in Karnataka when the mishap occurred.

Deputy Tehsildar of Avinashi Town informed, "19 people that include 14 men and 5 women, died in the collision between the bus and the truck near Avinashi town."

The bodies have been taken to Tirupur government hospital.
Further details are awaited.
