DVS puts drought loss at Rs 5,000 cr; to meet PM for aid

Bangalore, May 1: Pegging the estimated loss caused by drought at Rs 5,000 crore, Karnataka Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda today expressed hope that the Centre would share at least half of this burden to help the BJP government carry out relief works on a war-footing.

Gowda is leading an all-party delegation to meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and other Union Ministers to discuss the drought conditions and seek Central assistance to overcome the calamity which has hit 25 of the 30 districts.

Talking to reporters on the eve of his three-day visit to Delhi, Gowda said he would meet Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar tomorrow and apprise him of the condition of farmers who were the worst sufferers due to drought, which has been the most severe that the state has witnessed in last eight years.

The delegation would also meet Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee to seek immediate release of funds.

Gowda said the visit of UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi to a drought-hit village in the state last week would help Karnataka get a better package.

The Chief Minister said he would also discuss the problems faced by red-gram growers and sericulture farmers in the state with the concerned ministers.

The all-party delegation would include Rural Development Minister Jagadish Shettar and some other ministers, Congress Leader and Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Siddaramaiah, Chairperson of the Legislative Council Motamma and Janata Dal(S) leaders H D Revanna and Basavaraj Horatti.

New Delhi, Feb 5: AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Wednesday expressed his suspicion over the government using force to clear the Shaheen Bagh stretch where an agitation has been ongoing for over 50 days against Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

While speaking to ANI over the phone, Owaisi was asked that there are indications from the government that after February 8, Shaheen Bagh will be cleared.

In reply, he said, "Might be they will shoot them, they might turn Shaheen Bagh into Jallianwala Bagh. This might happen. BJP minister gave a statement to 'shoot a bullet'. The government must give an answer as (to) who is radicalising."

Further speaking about NPR and NRC, Owaisi said, "Government must give a clear cut answer that till 2024 NRC will not be implemented. Why are they spending Rs 3900 crore for NPR? I feel this way because I was a History student. Hitler during his reign conducted census twice and after that, he pushed the jews in a gas chamber. I don't want our country (to) go in that way."

Kanpur, Feb 20: Inspector general, Kanpur range, has ordered a probe into a woman's allegation that the cops misbehaved with her at Raipurwa police station when she went there with her father to lodge a complaint of harassment and eve-teasing.

The woman posted her complaint on the Twitter handle of Kanpur police.

The woman, 21, alleged that instead of listening to her complaint, Raipurwa cops asked her, "Zyada padh gayi ho, itna advance kisne bana dia hai, tumhare Papa ne?" (You are too educated. Who made you so advanced - your father?)

She further said that instead of taking necessary action on her complaint, the police forced her father to compromise with the accused, the son of her landlord, who harassed her on Monday.

The woman also stated that there were no female cops at the police station and she had to wait for several hours.

"Throughout my presence at the police station, I had to interact with male cops," she tweeted.

Inspector, Raipurwa, Sunil Kumar, however, has denied allegations.

"Her allegations are not true. Both the parties settled the dispute on their own," he said.

IG Range, Mohit Agarwal, meanwhile, said, "I have asked the SSP to initiate a probe in this regard and take action against guilty cops."

New Delhi, Aug 7 : Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday slammed the Central government as India crossed the 20 lakh COVID-19 positive cases.

Taking to Twitter, the Congress leader reiterated his earlier tweet, sent out on July 17, which stated "The 10,00,000-mark has been crossed.

With the rapid spread of COVID-19, by August 10, more than 20,00,000 will be infected in the country. 

The government must take concrete, planned steps to stop the epidemic."
"20 lakh-mark has been crossed, Modi government is missing," the Congress leader tweeted today.

The Union Health Ministry has said active cases as a percentage of total cases have seen a significant drop from 34.17 per cent on July 24 to 30.31 per cent.
