The Hillary effect? India bans urea imports from Iran ahead of Clinton's visit

New Delhi, May 3: Apparently bowing to the American pressure India has dropped Iran from the urea procurement list just ahead of US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's visit to the country, sources told Headlines Today on Tuesday.

Iran was the source of about 35 per cent of urea imports to India for the last two years. The State Trading Corporation (STC), a key government agency for procurement, circulated a tender document by its fertiliser division which said that the origin of urea should be other than Iran.

Sources said that the STC put the Iran exclusion clause following instructions from the Ministry of Fertilisers. While officially the ministry of external affairs (MEA) has chosen not to react, the move comes just ahead of Clinton's scheduled visit to New Delhi on May 7.

"The origin of the offered urea should be other than Iran. Bids offering Urea originating from Iran shall not be considered for evaluation," the tender document circulated by the STC's fertiliser division said.

The United States has put sanctions on imports from Iran and has been pushing countries like India to snap trading with the country.

Insiders said that the Indian envoy to Iran, Dinkar Shrivastava, has sent an SoS message to New Delhi seeking clarifications as the move could jeopardise India's relations. India needs Iran for key imports like oil and it also provides strategic inroads for India to Afghanistan.

Kerala plane crash: Family of 5 flying home to Kozhikode escapes with injuries

Kozhikode, Aug 8: A family of five, returning to their hometown at Koducalli in Kozhikode from Dubai, were aboard the fateful Air India Express flight that crash-landed at the Kozhikode airport claiming at least 18 lives on Friday.

Saifudheen, 40, is a businessman in Dubai. During the vacation when schools were closed here, his wife Fasalunnisa travelled, along with their children Muhammad Shahil, Fathima Sana and Aysha Shanza, to meet her husband.

On Friday, they were all travelling in the Air India aircraft to Kozhikode.

All five have received injuries and have been admitted to Baby Memorial Hospital Kozhikode except Sana, who is admitted to Al Shifa Hospital at Perinthalmanna in Malappuram.

"Saifudheen is my uncle. He and his family members were returning from Dubai when this unfortunate incident occurred. We were informed about the mishap at 8 pm. Now the family members have been shifted to Baby Memorial Hospital and everyone is fine now," Muhammad Salih, nephew of Saifudheen said.

The death toll in the flight crash landing incident at Kozhikode International Airport in Kerala rose to 18, including two pilots, Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said on Saturday.

The minister said that he will visit the Kozhikode airport to take stock of the situation.

Two special relief flights have been arranged from Delhi and one from Mumbai for rendering humanitarian assistance to all the passengers and the family members.

Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and Flight Safety Departments have reached to investigate the incident, the Air India Express stated.

Govt to sell 100 pc stake in Air India; issues bid document

New Delhi, Jan 27: The government on Monday issued the preliminary information memorandum for 100 per cent stake sale in national carrier Air India. As part of the strategic disinvestment, Air India would also sell 100 per cent stake in low cost airline Air India Express and 50 per cent shareholding in joint venture AISATS, as per the bid document issued on Monday.

Management control of the airline would also be transferred to the successful bidder.

The government has set March 17 as the deadline for submitting the Expression of Interest (EoI).

EY is the transaction adviser for Air India disinvestment process.

'His father dropped bombs in India,' says Digvijaya on Padmi Shri given to Adnan Sami

Indore, Feb 3: Senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh on Sunday attacked the Centre for conferring the Padma Shri on Pakistan-origin singer Adnan Sami, who became an Indian citizen in 2016.

Addressing "Save the Constitution, Save the Country" rally here in Madhya Pradesh, Singh said Sami's father had "pounded India with bombs" when he was serving with the Pakistani Air Force (PAF).

"Since Sami is an artist who has come from Pakistan, I had recommended his case to the Indian government for citizenship. He has got Indian citizenship under the Modi government," the Congress leader said, adding that he never made any recommendation to the government for conferring Padma Shri on Sami.

He said Sami's father had "dropped bombs against us" while flying a Pakistan Air Force combat plane.

"In contrast, Indian Army officer Sanaullah of Assam, who had fought against the enemy, was sent to a detention camp for failing to show documents (during the Assam NRC exercise). This is the citizenship law of the Modi government," he said.

Sami, born in London to a Pakistani Air force veteran, applied for Indian citizenship in 2015 and became a citizen of the country in January 2016.

He was one of the 118 people chosen for the Padma Shri awards by the Centre last month.
