Kolkata, May 20: It's been a year since the day Mamata Banerjee ended 34 years of the Left rule and came to power in West Bengal, and she has found a clever way to commemorate it. After the red rule of the Left and the green wave of 'Poriborton', Mamata is painting Kolkata blue.
The state Chief Minister has decreed that the city needs a neutral uniform colour code.
Kolkata Mayor Sovan Chatterjee said, "If Jaipur is known as the pink city, Kolkata can also be known as a blue city under the direction of Mamata Banerjee. We are using a uniform colour for Kolkata."
For a city known for its chaotic ensemble of buildings this uniformity might be a little hard to achieve but the Kolkata Municipal Corporation has a cunning plan - tax cuts for those who paint their homes blue.
It's surely hard not to be inspired. After all, blue is in but while one can change his clothes with a little money and a bit of sweat, for Kolkata to change its colours will cost the tax payers Rs 80 crore.
