Rajiv Gandhi's assassin scores 91% in class 12 exam

Chennai, May 22: A G Perarivalan, who is one of the three convicts on death row in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, has scored more than 91% in the Tamil Nadu class 12 examinations. Perarivalan scored 1,096 out of 1,200 marks and tops the list of 35 prisoners who successfully wrote the examination in March.

Perarivalan is facing the gallows, along with Murugan and Santhan. The three had sought a stay on their execution on the ground that the President had taken 11 years in deciding their mercy pleas after the apex court rejected their petition in August last year.

Perarivalan was 19 years when he was picked up by the CBI on June 11, 1991. He was charged with assisting the assassination by buying a nine-volt battery to assemble a bomb for Sivarasan, one of the assassins. Perarivalan is the youngest accused in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case. An avid reader, Perarivalan has been fond of poetry and the teachings of Tamil saint poet Thiruvalluvar.

Another inmate Soundarapandian in Madurai prison has scored 1080 marks (90%) and a prisoner in Puzhal prison Munusamy has scored 988 (82.33%) in the class 12 examination. Tamil Nadu education department released the results of the Class 12 examinations on Tuesday.

Additional director general of police (ADGP - Prisons) S K Dogra said he was very happy with the resutls. "In 2011, only 19 prisoners took the class 12 exam, . This year the number doubled. All the 35 inmates w ho wrote the exam have passed ," he said.

JIH urges Muslims to follow safety guidelines during ‘festival of sacrifice’

The Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH) has urged Muslims to take precautions during Eid ul-Adha (Bakrid), to be celebrated in the last week of July, and has issued guidelines on offering prayers and sacrifices.

"The namaz should be offered by adhering to the social distancing norms at eidgahs and mosques. Muslims should offer the Eid prayer at home in the same manner as they had done during Eid ul-Fitr in areas where restrictions have been imposed due to COVID-19," it said.

For the sacrifice of animals, a part of the festival, the JIH said "precautionary" measures should be taken due to the pandemic.

"Don't offer qurbani on roads, footpaths and pathways. Ensure the highest level of cleanliness and hygiene. Ensure that you bury the blood and entrails of the animal after qurbani or deliver it at the designated spot of garbage collection," the JIH said in a statement.

The JIH said it would be appropriate to form a committee few days before the Eid ul-Adha, which would keep an eye on the situation, remain in touch with the local administration and offer cooperation towards maintaining the law and order in the area.

Chhattisgarh minister TS Singh Deo calls Scindia power-hungry leader for ditching Congress

Raipur, Mar 13: Calling Jyotiraditya Scindia a "power-hungry" leader, Chhattisgarh Minister and Congress leader TS Singh Deo on Friday said that if someone joins another party to occupy the top position of the state that he should never become a Chief Minister.

When enquired if Deo has any plans to join the BJP in the future, he quickly said that he would never be able to relate himself with the "ideology" of the party.

"People may make claims but I will never join BJP, even if I get 100 lives I will never associate with that ideology. A person who joins BJP for not being able to become Chief Minister should never become a Chief Minister," he said while speaking to media in Raipur.

"A single person does not remain as captain forever, Kapil Dev got his chance when Gavaskar was there. Currently, Virat Kohli is the captain but in T20 there are different captains. Will Kohli join Pakistan's team if he is not made the captain? This is beyond understanding."

On Wednesday, Scindia joined BJP in New Delhi in the presence of party President JP Nadda. He had resigned from Congress a day earlier after meeting Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

He will file his nomination for the Rajya Sabha elections on March 13.

Jyotiraditya Scindia’s PA tests COVID positive, has long contact trail

Bhopal, Jul 7: Anil Mishra, personal assistant to BJP Rajya Sabha MP Jyotiraditya Scindia, has tested positive.

He has been accompanying Scindia throughout his tours post-corona infection.

His contact trail is longer than that of Scindia. He has been in touch with Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan.

Mishra was present during Scindia's meetings with the MLAs and the swearing in ceremony of the MP ministry on July 2.

BJP sources say there is concern over the possible list of people who will be put in isolation to check the spread of the virus.
