Lucknow, June 15: The bungalow of the former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Mayawati, here is back in the news after the Akhilesh Yadav government disclosed in the Assembly on Thursday that Rs. 86.56 crore was spent on its construction and renovation when her Bahujan Samaj Party ruled the State from 2007 to March 2012.

Another Rs. 20.15 lakh was spent on its maintenance. But a probe was not conducted since there was no complaint of financial irregularities. And the money spent was not audited either, the government said.

To a question from Ravidas Mehrotra of the Samajwadi Party, Minister of State for Protocol Abhishek Mishra said that “from 2007 to 2012, Rs. 8,656.20 lakh [Rs. 86.56 crore] was spent on the construction works of 13A, Mall Avenue bungalow of the former Chief Minister.” The Power Maintenance Zone-2 spent Rs.11.49 lakh and the Civil Maintenance Zone-2 spent Rs.8.66 lakh on maintenance works.

As no complaint of irregularities was received, Mr. Mishra said, a probe was not done. And it would not be possible to comment on points of irregularities because the expenditure was not audited.

Irrigation Minister Shivpal Singh Yadav said the government would re-acquire the irrigation land at Noida transferred to private builders during the Mayawati regime.

He was also critical of the demolition of Parikalp Bhawan, which housed the office of the Irrigation Department, and the colony, meant for the Department staff, — spread over 21,923.92 square metres — in Lucknow for building Buddha Vihar. The initial estimate of Rs. 80 crore for Buddha Vihar was revised to Rs. 448 crore.

Presenting the Irrigation Budget for 2012-13, Mr. Shivpal Singh Yadav said that during the previous regime, irrigation land was handed over to builders after the land use pattern was changed. “The deal caused the exchequer a loss of Rs. 2,642 crore,” he said, blaming the then Chairman of Noida Authority and vowing to punish the guilty officers.

New Delhi, Jan 22: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday said Indian values consider all religions equal, and that is why the country is secular and never became a theocratic state like Pakistan.

Speaking at the NCC Republic Day Camp in Delhi, Singh said: "We (India) said we would not discriminate among religions. Why did we do that? Our neighbouring country has declared that their state has a religion. They have declared themselves a theocratic state. We didn't declare so."

"Even America is a theocratic country. India is not a theocratic country. Why? Because our saints and seers did not just consider the people living within our borders as part of the family, but called everyone living in the world as one family," the minister said.

Singh underlined that India had never declared its religion would be Hindu, Sikh or Buddhist and people of all religions could live here.

"They gave the slogan of 'Vasudev Kutumbakam' -- the whole world is one family. This message has gone to the whole world from here only," he added.

Very thoughtful and eye-catching statement by Defense Minister, Rajnath Singh.

Sir, I kindly request you to convey this beautiful message to your Party’s comrades, who are deprived of this dosage for long times and are badly need of this.

Also, for those from your Party, who are, time and again, spitting the venomous rhetoric against Dalits, Muslims, Christians and others alike.

Yashwant Sinhaji is now doing a wonderful job in this regard.

You will also follow his suit for sure in the days to come; that’s what your honest statement indicates.

Indore, Jan 24: Around 80 Muslim leaders of the BJP in Madhya Pradesh on Friday resigned from the primary membership of the party in protest over the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, calling it a "divisive" measure.

One of the leaders, Rajik Qureshi Farshiwala, said around 80 Muslim partymen have resigned from the BJP's primary membership after writing to the newly-appointed national president, J P Nadda, on Thursday.

These leaders, who dubbed the CAA "a divisive provision made on religious grounds", include several office- bearers of the BJP's minority cell, he said.

"It was becoming increasingly difficult for us to participate in our community's events after the CAA came into existence (in December 2019).

"At these events, people used to curse us and ask us how long we plan to keep quiet on a divisive law like the CAA?" he said.

"Persecuted refugees of any community should get Indian citizenship. You cannot decide that a particular person is an intruder or a terrorist merely on the basis of religion," Farshiwala added.

In their letter, the Muslim leaders stated, "Citizens have right to equality under Article 14 of the Indian Constitution. But the BJP-led Central Government is implementing the CAA on religious grounds.

"This is an act of dividing the country and against the basic spirit of the Constitution."

Some of the leaders who have resigned are considered close to BJP general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya.

When asked about the development, Vijayvargiya on Thursday evening said, "I am not aware of the matter. But we will explain (about the CAA) if a person is being misled."
