Ansari is UPA’s choice for Vice-President

July 9, 2012

AnsariNew Delhi, July 9: The incumbent Vice-President, Mohammed Hamid Ansari, is likely to get a second term as the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) has decided to field him in the vice-presidential poll.

Though it was known in the Congress circles that Mr. Ansari was the front-runner, the first official indication of the candidature of the former diplomat and scholar came when Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Saturday telephoned Janata Dal (Secular) president H.D. Deve Gowda and sought the support of his party for Mr. Ansari.

Indications are that the Prime Minister has sounded out some Left leaders also.

Mr. Gowda told The Hindu from Bangalore on Sunday that he readily agreed to back Mr. Ansari’s candidature. The UPA can ensure victory of its vice-presidential candidate with the help of the SP and the BSP. Members of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha together constitute the electoral college.

Besides Pranab Mukherjee, who was ultimately nominated by the UPA as its presidential candidate, Mr. Ansari was the other preference of the ruling alliance for President. Before finalising the candidature of Mr. Mukherjee, Congress president Sonia Gandhi conveyed both names to Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee and asked her to indicate her preference.

Mr. Ansari has been the front-runner for Vice-President ever since the UPA announced that Mr. Mukherjee was its candidate for President.

Weighing in his favour are two factors: he was seriously considered for President; and a majority of the Vice-Presidents in the past have become President. The only ones who have not made it are either those who died in office, or those whose bid for the Presidency came up at a time when the government that had nominated them was in the Opposition. Twice, owing to the fact that the incumbent President died in office, the election of the President did not coincide with the end of the Vice-President’s tenure.

If Mr. Ansari gets a second term, he will be the second incumbent to do so. The first was S. Radhakrishnan, who served two terms as Vice-President before becoming President, as the first President, Rajendra Prasad, got two terms.

The vice-presidential election is scheduled for August 7.

The National Democratic Alliance has not initiated any consultation so far. According to sources, the dominant view at the BJP Core Committee meeting, held on Saturday, was that since the party did not have the numbers it should not field a candidate and should extend support to the nominee of another Opposition party.

Having burnt its fingers in the presidential election, the BJP is cautious on the vice-presidential poll.

The NDA and the Left parties were divided on the issue of extending support to Mr. Mukherjee.

Though the NDA has not hinted at any name, there are reports on the likelihood of senior BJP leader Jaswant Singh or Punjab Chief Minister and Shiromoni Akali Dal president Parkash Singh Badal getting the chance.

New Delhi, Mar 12: TMC MP Saugata Roy said Home Minister Amit Shah should resign for "failing" to control the riots in Delhi and demanded a judicial inquiry by a sitting Supreme Court judge.

Participating in a discussion on the violence in Delhi in Lok Sabha, Roy said the Delhi riots happened 72 years after Mahatma Gandhi was killed by a Hindu fanatic.

"Gandhiji has been murdered again in Delhi by, you know who," Roy said while addressing the Chair.

Taking on BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi for defending BJP leaders for their controversial remarks, which he claimed instigated the violence, Roy said he has seldom heard such a communal speech ever.

Dubbing the BJP MP as "Devil's Advocate", Roy said, "She spent five minutes defending the most hated man. May I quote (William) Shakespeare and call her the Devil's Advocate?...She is the best Devil's Advocate possible. She has also been an advocate for the Delhi Police which has shown total inaction and ineptness in this whole riot in Delhi."

Thereafter Roy trained his gun at Shah, who was present in the house while the TMC MP was speaking.

He said that when the riots started on February 24, Home Minister Shah was sitting in the front row at Motera Stadium (in Gujarat) welcoming US President Donald Trump.

"When Mr. Shah should have been in Delhi Police control room, he was welcoming Mr. Trump at Motera. There was no order to the police. Then on 25th, things went out of control. Armed mobs fought with each other on the streets of Delhi," Roy said.

Demanding resignation of Shah, Roy raised questions on NSA Ajit Doval's visit to the riots-affected areas on February 26 and asked what was the Home Minister doing.

"Is it NSA's business to control ordinary law and order situation? Why was the Home Minister absent in action? There is no explanation for the same," he said.

The TMC leader said he feels bad standing face-to-face with Shah.

"He is still young, he has a good future. He should acknowledge responsibility for his failure to control or stop Delhi riots and bring peace in three days. In the name of God, go and do not stay in the Home Minister's position," Roy said, adding he is the man who could not prevent riots in Delhi, at a place 10 kilometres away from the Home Ministry.

Roy demanded a judicial inquiry into the riots by a sitting Supreme Court judge and complete rehabilitation for all the riot victims.

Beijing, Feb 2: India on Sunday temporarily suspended e-visa facility for Chinese travellers and foreigners residing in China in view of the virulent coronavirus that has killed more than 300 people, infected 14,562 others and spread to 25 countries, including India, the US and the UK.

“Due to certain current developments, travel to India on e-visas stands temporarily suspended with immediate effect," the Indian Embassy announced.

“This applies to holders of Chinese passports and applicants of other nationalities residing in the People's Republic of China. Holders of already issued e-visas may note that these are no longer valid," the announcement said.

“All those who have a compelling reason to visit India may contact the Embassy of India in Beijing or the Indian consulates in Shanghai or Guangzhou, as well as the Indian Visa Application Centres in these cities," it said.

On Sunday, India airlifted a second batch of 323 stranded Indians and seven Maldivian citizens from coronavirus-hit Wuhan city, taking the total number of people evacuated to 654.

Air India's jumbo B747 made two flights to Wuhan city - the ground zero of the coronavirus epidemic. In the first flight on early Saturday, 324 Indians were evacuated and on Sunday another 323 Indians and seven Maldivian citizens were flown back.

It's not surprising for countries to restrict. it just feels wrong to treat them that way specially those who are not really infected. It could really hurt their feelings.
