Scarless operations via ‘spider tech’

New Delhi, July 10: The humble navel has been an onscreen scorcher in many Bollywood and south Indian movies but now, the belly button is all set to don a more responsible role - the scarless route to treat common abdominal conditions like appendix, gall bladder stones and the weight loss bariatric surgery.

Surgeons in Delhi will for the first time in Asia Pacific use what is called a 'spider technology' — a single flexible laparoscopy instrument that will do away with the need for five incisions or scars for any abdominal intervention.

Instead, the rod like machine will enter through the belly button and open up like an umbrella within the abdomen, providing the surgeon with several instruments with 360-degree range of motion along with small cameras.

Once the procedure is completed, the system closes up and is removed through the same incision.

Dr Pradeep Chowbey, who heads the Max Institute of Minimal Access, Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, will conduct the surgery on Tuesday. He said the greatest benefit is that there will be no visible scar because the 'spider' enters the abdomen through a small puncture at the navel.

In conventional laparoscopic surgery, surgeons place multiple incisions (five scars) in various parts of the abdomen in order to utilize several specialized instruments to achieve the necessary angles and access critical anatomical areas.

"This new technology is also hygienic as the instrument is disposable and for every new patient, a new instrument is used. This technology has not been used in Asia Pacific before," Dr Chowbey said.

"This is a quantum jump from the rigid laproscope. The spider is a flexible operating platform which has multiple arms, each acting as a separate instrument. Earlier, for any abdominal surgery, we had to make 3-4 extra punctures for different instruments to go in, leaving multiple scars 5-10 mm in diameter. With the spider, the laproscopic surgery will be scar-less. The instrument will go in and open up like an umbrella. The different limbs have different function - one could be a holder, another a dissector and the other a clip applier," he added.

"Lesser scars will mean lesser pain. Patients who receive a spider surgical procedure may experience less scarring with the potential for limited post-operative pain and a fast recovery to normal activities. We will put a water proof dressing on the belly button after the instrument is taken out. There will be no stitches," Dr Chowbey said.

According to the doctor, getting operated with a spider technology will cost around Rs 30,000 more than a normal laproscopic surgery.

In the 1990s, many surgeons began transitioning certain procedures from large, open incisions to multiple, smaller incisions through laparoscopic surgery. The surgeons had to learn an entirely new technique for performing complex surgeries, but the benefits of less invasive procedures drove many surgeons to embrace this innovation.

A flexible laparoscopy (scar-less surgery) is a class of minimally invasive surgery that utilizes small, flexible instruments that are controlled by a surgeon often through a single site.

Jaipur, July 13: Amid deepening political crisis in Rajasthan, a crucial meeting of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) will be held at the chief minister's residence here on Monday.

The Congress has issued a whip to all party legislators mandating their presence during the meeting which will be convened at 10.30 am by Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot.

Deputy Chief Minister Sachin Pilot has made it clear that he is not going to attend the meeting.

In a statement issued on Sunday night, Pilot had claimed that the Ashok Gehlot government was in minority and more than 30 Congress and some independent legislators have pledged support to him.

By doing so, he has openly displayed rebellion against the leadership of Gehlot.

However, All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary Avinash Pande has said that 109 MLAs have expressed confidence in the Ashok Gehlot-led Congress government in the state and have signed a letter in support.

Pande said a whip had been issued asking all the MLAs to attend the CLP meeting and that action will be taken against those who skip it.

In the 200-member Rajasthan Assembly, the Congress has 107 MLAs and the BJP 72.

The Congress has the support of 10 out of 13 independents, and other party MLAs like Rashtriya Lok Dal (1), which is its ally. The Congress also considers Bhartiya Tribal Party (2) and CPI(M) (2) MLAs as their supporters.

BJP ally Rashtriya Loktantrik Party (RLP) has three MLAs in the assembly.

New Delhi, Jan 9: Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos will be visiting India next week and is likely to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and officials, besides industry leaders, according to sources.

The top executive will also attend SMBhav – an event focussing on small and medium businesses in India - that is slated for January 15-16 in the capital city.

When contacted, Amazon declined to comment.

Amazon, which has seen significant growth in its business in India, has also witnessed protest from a section of traders in the country who claim that e-commerce giants including Amazon and Walmart-owned Flipkart offer deep discounts and engage in unfair business practices.

Last year, the government had tightened rules for e-commerce marketplaces with foreign investment. These rules barred such platforms from offering products of sellers in which they hold a stake and banned exclusive marketing arrangements among other clauses. Following this, Amazon restructured its joint ventures to ensure compliance.

Bezos is likely to discuss regulatory issues in his meeting with the government officials.

He is also slated to engage with SMBs during the SMBhav event. The event - which will focus on discussions around how technology adoption can enable SMBs in India - is slated to see participation from industry experts, policymakers, solution providers and Amazon leadership.

New Delhi, Jan 22: The BJP on Wednesday cited statements of several opposition leaders to accuse them of "abusing" Hindus for their appeasement politics and referred to the Congress as "Muslim League Congress".

Seeking apologies from Congress president Sonia Gandhi and NCP chief Sharad Pawar, BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra said leaders of these parties have used the ongoing protests against the amended citizenship law to "abuse" Hindus.

Chavan has said in a public meeting that the Congress decided to join hands with the Shiv Sena to form government in Maharashtra as Muslims wanted the party to stop the BJP, Patra stated, claiming that it shows the opposition party has nothing to do with people belonging to other religions, including Hindus.

Patra also referred to a statement from an NCP leader to attack the opposition.

Asked about Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge's reported jibe at the RSS for its "non-participation" in the freedom movement, the BJP leader shot back, asking if parents of Sonia Gandhi, who is of Italian origin, had fought in India's independence struggle.

The Indian National Congress, he said referring to the opposition party's full name, should be called "Muslim League Congress".
