Kerala court quashes charge sheet in Sabarimala case

Kochi, July 13: The Kerala High Court Friday quashed the charge sheet filed by police in the controversial Sabarimala ''astrological finding'' case, which included Kannada actress Jaimala among the accused.

While closing the case, the court also said that the charges against the accused were not legally tenable.

In June 2006, a team led by noted astrologer P. Unnikrishna Panicker conducted a four-day "devaprasnam" (a puja to invoke god) at the Sabarimala temple, following which Panicker revealed that there were signs of a woman having entered the sanctum sanctorum of the temple.

As per the rules of the temple, dedicated to bachelor Hindu god Ayappa, women of menstruating age are not allowed inside.

Soon after the noted astrologer's revelation, Kannada actress Jaimala claimed that she had entered the sanctum sanctorum and touched the temple deity in 1987.

Following this, a probe was launched and it concluded that the entire episode was staged to earn name and fame for Panicker.

Police filed a charge sheet against Panicker, his assistant Reghupathy and Jaimala for hatching a conspiracy and hurting religious sentiments of the people of the state.

The trio had filed a petition in the high court to dismiss the case.

Sabarimala is a popular Hindu temple located in Kerala's Western Ghats area at an altitude of 914 metres above sea level in Pathanamthitta district.

New Delhi, Jul 9: India reported the highest single-day spike of 24,879 new positive cases and 487 deaths in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of COVID-19 cases in the country to 7,67,296, according to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Out of the total number of cases, 2,69,789 are active, 4,76,378 have been cured/discharged/migrated and 21,129 have died.

Maharashtra remains the worst-affected state due to COVID-19 with as many as 2,23,724 cases, including 91,084 active, 1,23,192 cured/discharged and 9,448 deaths.

It is followed by Tamil Nadu (1,22,350) and Delhi (1,04,864).

Meanwhile, a total of 1,07,40,832 samples have been tested for COVID-19 till July 8. Of these, 2,67,061 samples were tested yesterday, stated Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).

New Delhi, May 9: With 3,320 coronavirus cases and 95 deaths reported in the last 24 hours, India's COVID-19 cases rose to 59,662 on Saturday, informed the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

The total number of active cases in the country now stands at 39,834 while the number of cured/discharged/migrated stands at 17,847.

The country has reported 1,981 deaths so far, added the Ministry.

Maharashtra has the highest number of cases with 19, 063 followed by Gujarat with 7,402 cases and Delhi with 6,318 cases.

Meanwhile, the country continues to remain in a lockdown slated to end on May 17.

New Delhi, Jul 24: India reported the highest single-day spike of 49,310 coronavirus cases on Friday, according to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

The total COVID-19 positive cases stand at 12,87,945 including 4,40,135 active cases, 8,17,209 cured/discharged/migrated.
With 740 deaths in the last 24 hours, the cumulative toll reached 30,601.

Maharashtra has reported 3,47,502 coronavirus cases, the highest among states and Union Territories in the country. A total of 1,92,964 cases have been reported from Tamil Nadu till now, while Delhi has recorded 1,27,364 coronavirus cases.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), 3,52,801 samples were tested for coronavirus on Thursday and overall 1,54,28,170 samples have been tested so far.
