Estranged Raj Thackeray rushes to ailing Uddhav

Mumbai, July 17: When one cousin's heart became cause for concern, the other cousin's heart melted. On Monday, when Uddhav Thackeray, executive president of the Shiv Sena, was hospitalized on account of a suspected heart ailment, his estranged cousin Raj Thackeray cut short his two-day party conclave in Alibaug to be at his bedside at Lilavati Hospital. Later in the evening, he drove Uddhav home in a silver Mercedes. This was the first time in six years that the two had come face to face.

Uddhav was in hospital for a coronary angiography. His personal physician, Dr Jalil Parker, told TOI that he was evaluated for chest discomfort. "He will be back for a check-up soon," he added.

However, sources in Matoshree, Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray's home, and Lilavati Hospital claimed that Uddhav had multiple heart blockages and would need to undergo an angioplasty or a bypass surgery at the earliest.

Sources also said that Thackeray Senior and the entire family would meet cardiologist Dr Matthew Samuel Kalarickal, who performed Monday's angiography, to discuss the next course of action. Incidentally, it was Dr Kalarickal who performed the angioplasty on the Sena patriarch three years ago.

A final decision on whether Uddhav, who turns 52 on July 26, will undergo bypass surgery or opt for angioplasty will be taken by the family, the sources added. It is learned that Uddhav had gone to Lilavati Hospital on Thursday for a stress test but the results were not satisfactory. "Hence, the doctors decided to call him on Monday morning for an angiography," said sources. The medical team comprised Dr Kalarickal and cardiologists Ajit Menon and Ajit Desai.

But the news of his heart disease brought about what is being described as a political coup—the two estranged Thackeray cousins met each other for the first time in six years. Raj had quit all Sena posts in 2005 and in 2009 had walked out of Matoshree to launch the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS).

"Uddhavji is perfectly fine. The doctors have told us there is no need to panic. Given the fact that age is on his side and that his lifestyle is healthy, a decision on angiography or bypass can be taken in the course of time," a close relative said.

News of Uddhav's hospitalization spread like wildfire across Mumbai and Shiv Sainiks rushed to hospital. Key party leaders, too, flocked to Lilavati Hospital.

Bhopal, Mar 10: The number of MLAs who have resigned from the Congress in Madhya Pradesh climbed to 20 on Tuesday afternoon with another legislator quitting the ruling party, sources said.

While 19 MLAs, most of them believed to be loyal to expelled party leader Jyotiraditya Scindia, have sent their resignation letters via e-mail to Raj Bhavan, Bisahulal Singh submitted his resignation letter as an MLA to the Assembly speaker.

"We have received resignations of 19 MLAs through e-mails with attachments," a Raj Bhawan official told PTI.

Sources in Congress produced a copy of Bisahulal Singh's resignation letter which he submitted to the speaker.

Former chief minister and senior BJP leader later announced that Singh (65) has joined the BJP.

Mumbai, Jan 30: Speaking at an event, Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Abu Azmi's son and businessman, Farhan Azmi said that if CM Uddhav Thackeray will build lord Ram's Temple at Ayodhya then he will build Babri Masjid there. He said, "My problem is with Uddhav Thackeray.

I respect him a lot and if in Shiv Sena somebody really deserves respect, then it is no other than Uddhav Thackeray. He never runs a government and I don't think he is running his party correctly.

If being the Chief Minister, Uddhav Thackeray says he is going to Ayodhya on 7th March, I will also go with him. He will build lord Ram's Temple and we will build Babri Masjid."

New Delhi, Jan 15: The mother of 23-year-old paramedic student, who was raped and brutally assaulted by six men in December 2012, on Tuesday said she knew that the curative petitions of the convicts will be rejected and is confident that they will be hanged on January 22.

Her remarks came after the Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to stay the execution of two of the four death row convicts in the 2012 Nirbhaya gang rape and murder case while dismissing their curative petitions against their conviction and capital punishment.

"The curative please had to be rejected. This was the third time they had gone to the Supreme Court. Whatever pleas they file, we are ready to face them and we will fight it out. We feel that they will be hanged on January 22. We want that to happen," Nirbhaya's mother told PTI over phone.

The four convicts -- Vinay Sharma (26), Mukesh Kumar (32), Akshay Kumar Singh (31) and Pawan Gupta (25) -- are to be hanged on January 22 at 7 am in Tihar jail as a Delhi court issued their death warrants on January 7.

Vinay and Mukesh had filed curative petitions on January 9.

Shortly after the apex court refused to stay the execution of two of them, Mukesh moved a mercy petition before President Ram Nath Kovind.

Mukesh also approached the Delhi High Court for quashing the death warrant. The high court is expected to take up his petition on Wednesday.
