Rahul Gandhi hints at playing proactive role in party and govt

New Delhi July 19: Breaking his silence on the growing clamour in Congress, Rahul Gandhi on Thursday indicated he will play a proactive role and the decision on the timing will be taken by party president Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

He said a decision has been taken on playing a bigger role and the timing depends on the leadership.

Rahul told NDTV that the option of playing a bigger role in the party and in the government was open.

His comments comes a day after Sonia had said that it was for Rahul to decide for himself on playing a larger role in the party.

"No one can take a decision on his behalf. He has to take a decision," she had said in Parliament House on Wednesday.

These comments come against the backdrop of pleas made by senior Congress leaders like Digvijay Singh and Salman Khurshid for Rahul to play a larger role in the party.

Thiruvananthapuram, Mar 10: Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on monday thanked PM Narendra Modi  for extending birthday wishes to him in malayalam.

"Thank you, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, for this elaborate birthday greeting in shudh sahitya Malayalam! Am touched by your thoughtfulness," Tharoor tweeted with a picture of the letter from Modi.

In another tweet, the Congress MP also posted its translation, that reads,

Tharoor, who is an MP from Thiruvananthapuram, turned 64 on march 9.

New Delhi, May 29: With the highest spike of 7,466 more COVID-19 cases and 175 deaths reported in the past 24 hours, India's COVID-19 tally reached 1,65,799 on Friday, according to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

The number of active coronavirus cases stands at 89,987 while 71,105 people have been cured or recovered and one patient has migrated, it said. The death toll due to the infection has reached 4,706 in the country.

Maharashtra is the worst affected state with 59,546 cases. Tamil Nadu has recorded as many as 19,372 cases while Gujarat and Delhi have recorded 15,562 and 16,281 coronavirus cases respectively.

New Delhi, Jan 1: Newly-appointed Chief of the Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat on Wednesday said the armed forces stay away from politics and work as per the directives of the government of the day, remarks that come amid allegations that the forces were being politicised.

Gen Rawat also said that his focus as CDS will be to integrate the efforts of the three services and to work as a team.

"We keep ourselves away from politics. We act according to the directives of the government of the day," he said.

Gen Rawat said his focus will be to ensure best and optimal use of resources allocated to the three services.
