Salem, July 20: Villagers turned violent and indulged in stone-throwing when the police tried to stop ‘eruthuattam’ (bull dancing), an age-old ritual, at the annual festival of their village temple at Neikkarapatti, near here on Thursday.

Their action forced the police to resort to lathi charge and burst tear gas shells. Eight police personnel, including an inspector and a few village women were injured.

After first-aid, the injured were removed to the Salem Government Medical College Hospital for further treatment.

Traffic on the busy Salem-Coimbatore four-lane National Highway remained disrupted for nearly two hours in the morning when a group of miscreants staged a road blockade protesting the denial of permission for the ritual.

The police, after chasing them out amid a hail of stones, had to remove boulders, stones and tree branches placed on the highway for a distance of one km, to restore traffic.

Senior revenue and police officials, including Collector K. Maharabushanam, DIG Sanjay Kumar, SPs Ashwin M Kotnis (Salem), Ajithkumar Singh (Dharmapuri) and Kannammal (Namakkal), Salem RDO Prasanna Ramasamy and other officials held talks with villagers till late Thursday evening.

The villagers promised them that they would strive hard to restore peace.

They claimed that the police refused permission for the ‘eruthuattam’ ritual citing Supreme Court orders.

People from 18 villages had congregated on the temple premises to celebrate ‘eruthuattam,’ which, according to them, was an important ritual.

They said that the devotees had brought the bulls from various places. These animals, they said, would be taken out one by one for the ritual in front of the temple after tethering them to poles.

The devotees also claimed it was different from traditional ‘jallikattu’ (bull taming) sport, being staged in many southern districts, against which the Supreme Court had passed a set of stringent guidelines.

“Here neither the animal will be subjected to any form of cruelty nor will any life be lost,” said a temple trustee member.

Collector Maharabushanam refuted their claims saying permission was turned down to the ritual as per the Government Order based on Supreme Court guidelines that banned any acts of cruelty to animals. “The villagers accepted this and ensured peace,” he further said.

“We have detained 124 persons in connection with the violence so far. We maintained patience despite provocation and retaliated ‘mildly’ when the situation threatened to go out of control,” said SP Ashwin M Kotnis to The Hindu.

The police bolstered security in and around the village besides mounting a house-to-house search for troublemakers.

Jammu, Jan 15: Fresh landslides kept the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway shut for the third consecutive day on Wednesday, leaving over 5000 vehicles stranded.

"There were four fresh landslides in Digdol and Panthiyal belts on the highway in Ramban district. The traffic on the highway remained closed for the third day today", a police officer told PTI.

On Monday, heavy rains triggered shooting of stones in Moumpassi, Digdole and Panthiyal areas, forcing a suspension of the traffic, the official said.

Snowfall in Kashmir side of the highway, including Jawahar Tunnel, since Sunday has resulted in blockade of the highway.

"No fresh traffic was allowed from Nagrota in Jammu for Kashmir", he said.

As a result of the blockade of the highway, over 5000 vehicles remained stranded at various places en route from Lakhanpur in Kathua district to Banihal belt of Ramban district and also on the Kashmir side.

Hyderabad, Jul 12: Hyderabad MP and All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Saturday condemned the demolition of a mosque and a temple inside the Secretariat building. He demanded the arrest of the contractor for demolition.
"During the process of demolition of the Secretariat building in Telangana, the mosque and temple were also demolished. The contractor must be booked and should be arrested. The public should know that we condemn this," he said while speaking to news agency.
Pointing out that his party MLAs Akbaruddin Owaisi and Moazam Khan have urged the state Assembly to look into the matter, he added, "We are not against the building of a new Secretariat, but what we asked for is not to destroy these structures during the process."
He welcomed the Chief Minister's announcement regarding the rebuilding of these structures.
"We expect the mosque to be built in the exact same place where it once stood. We expect the Chief Minister to speak to the representatives and meet our expectations and emotions about the mosque," he added.

New Delhi, Feb 4: Miffed over the controversy created by its former Union minister and Uttara Kannada MP Anantkumar Hegde by his remarks against Mahatma Gandhi, the BJP, it was learnt, has issued a show-cause notice to him. The ruling party came under heavy criticism from the opposition over its MP’s remarks. The opposition has demanded a clarification from Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his party MP’s remarks.

Often in news for his controversial remarks, Hegde, sources said, could also be barred from attending the first parliamentary party meeting of the BJP of the budget session, scheduled on Tuesday. The party had taken a similar approach against its Bhopal MP Pragya Thakur during the last winter session for praising Mahatma Gandhi’s killer Nathuram Godse. Though the BJP leadership was earlier of the view that Hegde should tender an apology over his remarks but the party top brass, it was learnt, decided that it was not enough.

The Congress on Monday launched a scathing attack on the central government over the comments of BJP Lok Sabha MP Ananthkumar Hegde on Mahatma Gandhi. The party demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi come to Parliament and clarify his position on BJP leader’s “objectionable” remarks.

Congress party spokesman Anand Sharma said, “we can understand that why one after the other senior BJP leaders are insulting the memory of Mahatma Gandhi. They are disparaging the national movement, the freedom struggle because they are ideological descendents of those who were not only non-participants, but, actively opposed the freedom movement.” He further added, “Parliament is in session. We demand that the Prime Minister come to the House and make his position clear. As I have said, feeds that he is unhappy and angry, we are not concerned with that. In the very ideology, mindset, thinking and language of the BJP, there is violence.”

Asserting that the BJP MP’s statement was condemnable, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot said the leaders of the saffron party could afford to call the freedom movement a drama as they never fought for the country’s independence. “Such statements reveal their true mindset that they use Gandhi's name just for show and have no regard for him,” he said.
