Akhilesh renames UP districts named after dalits by Mayawati

mayavathiLucknow, July 24: The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet on Monday approved a proposal to rename eight districts whose names were changed during former chief minister Mayawati's tenure. At a meeting chaired by chief minister Akhilesh Yadav, the state cabinet said Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Nagar and Ramabai Nagar will revert to their original names, Amethi and Kanpur Dehat. The decision, the government said, was taken following requests from residents and people's representatives who said they were facing difficulties in identifying their districts both within and outside the state.

Restoring the original names of existing districts, in Monday's cabinet, the government also approved new names for the districts that were created during the BSP regime. Bheem Nagar, Prabudh Nagar and Pancheel Nagar, three districts that were created in September 2011, the cabinet said, would now be renamed as Sambhal, Shamli and Hapur, respectively. In a similar vein, while Kanshiram Nagar will now be Kasganj, Mahamaya Nagar and J P Nagar have also been restored to their original names -- Hathras and Amroha, respectively.

This is the third time the Samajwadi Party government has revoked BSP decisions. Earlier, the SP government also scrapped social welfare schemes named after Dalit icons, revoked quota system in promotions and renamed public utility services and environment awards that were constituted in the name of BSP founder Kanshi Ram.

Reacting sharply to the state government's decision, former CM Mayawati said "the act of naming districts after Dalit icons was meant to inspire people and usher the state towards social change". Down, but hardly out, the BSP supremo also warned the SP that it would have to pay, eventually, for resorting to "cheap popularity'' tactics.

In a landmark decision, the state cabinet also decided to allot up to 250 sq meters of free land to all persons displaced by floods in the state. Saying that land would be allotted on priority basis -- to persons of Scheduled Castes and tribes, other backward castes, farmers and rural craftspeople from the general category but living below the poverty line -- the government also added that the possession of land would be revoked if beneficiaries failed to construct houses on the land, or maintain it in keeping with the state government's directions.

In itself, restoring names by which different places have been known for a long time might seem like a good idea. However, in this particular case it is difficult to escape the conclusion that the move is driven more by a desire to undo all the previous regime did than by any considerations of public convenience. In general, the practice of repeatedly changing names of cities, districts, streets and so on is best avoided. Not only does it trigger a chain reaction of constant renaming, as in this case, it is a nuisance to the public at large which is suddenly confronted with a name it cannot associate with.

Hyderabad, Apr 12: Indicating that prolonged lockdown to contain coronavirus spread may lead to job cuts in the Indian IT industry, NASSCOM former president R Chandrashekhar has said that the work-from-home culture may become a positive development in the long run as it opens up newer avenues and save investments by IT firms.

The former bureaucrat also said startups which are surviving on funds infused by venture capitalists may face tougher situations if the present scenario deteriorates.

"The larger companies may not be actually cutting jobs for two reasons. One is that they do not want to lose their employees and they have money to pay. Many of them ( big companies), even if they do shed some jobs it might be at the most people who are on temporary or intern type and all. But they would not want regular and permanent employees to go. So as long as they have sufficient flexibility in their books, they would continue," said NASSCOM former president.

"But beyond a point that it goes on, for let us say, two months or three months, then even for them, they will feel the pressure. They may not just keep on providing subsidies to the employees. So the key question will be how long that goes on," Chandrasekhar said.

He also said the work-from-home systems being adopted by several firms across the globe, including India, may have a negative impact on the industry in the short-term, but in the long run it would change the work culture which hitherto was not experienced by many of the IT firms in India.

 On impact of the prolonged lockdown on startups, he said it would be a big challenge for the budding enterprises as the investments they get are based on their ideas and future revenues and the present situation under which peoples movement is curbed may shackle their progress.

 "Where will they (startups) get money to pay salaries to their employees. Venture capital investors would not pay the money or invest their money to pay salaries because they are not in the charity business."

If the employees are not paid and if they leave and it is difficult for the startup againto come up. So the whole investment plan goes for a toss, he said.

Former chairman of NASSCOM, B V R Mohan Reddy said a clear picture as to what is going to happen has not yet emerged as the situation with all respects is still evolving. Reddy said there will be a demand shrinkage for the IT industry as the entire world is under stress. "There is no economy in this world that is going to do well in this situation.

So, therefore, there will be a demand shrinkage, he said, indicating tougher times of the industry ahead.

New Delhi, Jun 23: With an increase of 14,933 new cases and 312 deaths in the last 24 hours, India's COVID-19 count reached 4,40,215 on Tuesday.

According to the latest update by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), 14,011 deaths have been recorded due to the infection so far in the country.

The rise in confirmed cases today is lower than the highest spike of 15 thousand plus cases registered on Sunday.

The count includes 1,78,014 active cases, and 2,48,190 cured/discharged/migrated patients.

Maharashtra with 1,35,796 confirmed cases remains the worst-affected by the infection so far in the country. The state's count includes 61,807 active, 67,706 cured, discharged patients while 6,283 deaths have been reported due to the infection so far.

Meanwhile, the national capital's confirmed coronavirus cases reached 62,655.

2,233 deaths have been reported in Delhi due to the infection so far.

Tamil Nadu has reported 62,087 cases so far with toll increased to 794.

New Delhi, Jan 13: Walmart, the world’s largest retailer, has fired around 50 of its India executives as part of its restructuring in the country, three sources with direct knowledge said.

The move underscores the struggles Walmart has faced in expanding its wholesale business in India. The Bentonville, Arkansas based company currently operates 28 wholesale stores where it sells goods to small shopkeepers, and not to retail consumers.

The firings mostly affected executives in the company’s real estate division because the growth in the wholesale model has not been that robust, two of the sources said.

“It’s happening because focus is shifting to e-commerce rather than physical (stores),” said one source, who declined to be identified as the decision is not public.

Walmart did not respond to a request for comment.

Walmart has placed bold bets on India’s e-commerce sector. In 2018, it paid $16 billion to acquire a majority stake in India’s online marketplace Flipkart, in its biggest global acquisition.

The second source added that while Walmart could slow down the pace of opening new wholesale stores, the focus will increasingly be on boosting sales through business-to-business and retail e-commerce.

Some of the executives were sacked last week and more could be let go on Monday, two sources said.

In a statement to India’s Economic Times newspaper, which first reported the news, Walmart said it was always looking for ways to operate more effectively and that “this requires us to review our corporate structure to ensure that we are organized in the right way to best meet the needs of our members.”

Walmart has around 600 staff in its India head office out of a total of around 5,300 nationally, one of the sources said.
