New Delhi, August 1: After a week of fasting, the health of Team Anna members Arvind Kejriwal and Gopal Rai deteriorated on Tuesday. Despite doctors advising hospitalization, the two refused to end their fast and warned the government against any attempt to force-feed them.

Tests showed both activists had elevated ketone levels, indicating that the body was breaking down stored fat. Rai, whose ketone level was in the danger zone (four plus), has been vomiting frequently.

"I am warning the government to not try to arrest and hospitalize us. The consequences will be bad," said Kejriwal, questioning the grounds on which he could be arrested.

"My lawyers said I could be arrested for attempt to suicide. This law was made in 1860 and despite that Mahatma Gandhi use to hold fast. We never heard that he was forcefully arrested. Is this government worse than the British Raj?" asked Kejriwal.

A senior doctor who examined the two said they needed immediate medical attention. "Both of them need to be administered intravenous fluids because the rising ketone levels may affect organs like the heart and kidney," the doctor said.

With the government silent on the agitation and Team Anna refusing to budge on their demands, the stage seems set for a confrontation.

In his evening speech, Anna made a reference to the government's apathy, and said that their visit to the fasting venue would be a 'kalank' (shame). "The government said no minister will come here, or try to stop the movement. But there's no need for corrupt ministers to come here anyway," he said.

Addressing apprehensions that a Lokpal would not end corruption, he said, "At least bring the Jan Lokpal Bill and see what it does. It may not end corruption 100%, but will definitely bring it down by 60-65%." He added that ministers like P Chidambaram would be behind bars had there been a strong Lokpal.

The Gandhian also said when the time is right, he would return his Padma Bhushan. Anna remained on stage throughout the day, but both Kejriwal and Rai stayed in their enclosures off the dais.

Despite the declining health of the fasting activists, footfalls dwindled at the protest venue on Tuesday. Apart from the fact that it was a working day, rain and chaos resulting from the power grid failure also kept many away during the first half of the day. But by evening, the crowd had swelled to about 4000 protesters. Large groups of schoolchildren could be seen in their uniforms.

At around 6pm, actor Ranvir Shorey made his way to the protest, and was seated next to Kiran Bedi on the stage. During his speech, he urged Anna and his team to continue the campaign, but to leave the 'anshan'. He also motivated the people to step up and actively participate.

"This is about corruption, which has led to so many problems, whether it's bad roads, lack of education, barren land or malnourished children. We have truth on our side, and it is more powerful than corruption. It may take time and perseverance, but I'm willing to come even when I'm as old as Anna," he said.

Some protestors undertook drastic measure to show their support for the cause. Satyanarayan Sisodia, a farmer from Mathura, was lying half naked on the thorny branches of a babul tree. "If Anna Hazare and his team can undertake such troubles then so can I," said Satyanarayan. He claimed to be on fast since July 25. Some even cycled or walked for days from their homes to reach the venue.

Large groups of protesters also organized impromptu marches. One group walked from the venue to ITO, from where they marched back holding candles and torches. After the evening speeches, another group took out a rally to Connaught Place and back.

Jan 15: Amazon.com Inc Chief Executive Officer Jeff Bezos is facing a bitter welcome during his India visit this week as the country’s antitrust regulator initiated a formal investigation just hours before his arrival and trader bodies comprising millions of infuriated small store owners announced demonstrations.

Bezos is in New Delhi for the Smbhav summit, an Amazon India event for small and medium businesses. The billionaire is scheduled to conduct a fireside chat with Amazon India chief Amit Agarwal, anchoring an event that also features Infosys Ltd. co-founder Narayana Murthy and retail billionaire Kishore Biyani, who recently sold a stake in his retail group to Amazon. Ahead of the event, Bezos paid his respects at Mahatma Gandhi’s memorial, wearing a white tunic and a rust-colored Indian vest.

The small businesses that Amazon’s CEO is hoping to endear himself to, however, are organizing in opposition. The Confederation of All India Traders announced that members of its affiliate bodies across the country would stage sit-ins and public rallies in 300 cities to raise a war cry against the world’s largest online retailer. In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi last week, the confederation’s Secretary General Praveen Khandelwal alleged that Amazon, much like Walmart Inc.-owned Flipkart, was an “economic terrorist” who engaged in predatory pricing that deprived the government of tax revenue and “compelled the closure of thousands of small traders.”

India’s e-commerce market is projected to grow to $150 billion by 2022, according to a 2018 report by software industry group Nasscom and consulting firm PwC India. Competition for this rapidly expanding sector is intensifying as Asia’s richest man, Mukesh Ambani, prepares to go live with JioMart, an online shopping platform challenging Amazon and Walmart directly. The latter’s Flipkart Online Services Pvt is also delving deeper into the countryside in its pursuit for more customers. Amazon, for its part, opened a huge office complex in the southern city of Hyderabad in September, underscoring its commitment to the country.

The Competition Commission of India said it would probe the deep discounts, preferential listings and exclusionary tactics that Amazon and Flipkart are alleged to have used as anti-competitive levers. India’s trade bodies have long argued that both retail giants were flouting rules by promoting sales and discounts through their favoured sellers, many of whom they have preexisting commercial arrangements. The regulator has ordered for the investigation to be completed within two months.

Bezos last visited India in 2014 under starkly different circumstances. During that trip, the Amazon founder wore local festive garb, rode atop a festooned truck for a photo opp and presented Amazon’s Indian unit with a giant check for $2 billion. Since then, Amazon has pledged a further $3.5 billion to expand in the country.

New Delhi, Jan 11: Islamic preacher Zakir Naik has revealed that the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government offered to drop false money-laundering charges against him and provide with a "safe passage to India" in return for his support to the government's move to revoke Article 370 of the Constitution.

In a statement issued by Naik's PR team on Saturday, the Islamic preacher said that he was approached by a representative of the Indian government in September, who offered him the said deal on Kashmir, which he refused.

"Three and a half months before, the Indian officials approached me for a private meeting with a representative of the Indian government. When he came to Putrajaya (a Malaysian city), in the fourth week of September 2019, to meet me, he said that he is coming after personally meeting and under the direct instructions of the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi and the Home Minister of India Amit Shah," Naik said in a video statement released by his Mumbai-based PR team.

Naik, who has been living in Malaysia for the last three years, is facing charges of inciting communal disharmony and committing unlawful activities in India.

"(The representative) said that he wanted to remove the misconceptions and miscommunications between myself (Naik) and the Indian government, and wants to provide me a safe passage to India," he added. "He (the representative) said that he would like to use my connections to better the relationship between India and the other Muslim countries."

"The meeting lasted for several hours. He told me that he wanted me to support the BJP government when they revoked Article 370 in Kashmir. And I flatly refused," he added.

Naik said that after he refused the offer, he was further asked to not make public statements against the BJP or Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Chandigarh, Aug 1: The death toll in the Punjab spurious liquor tragedy rose to 86 on Saturday even as Chief Minister Amarinder Singh suspended seven excise officials and six policemen, officials said.

The government also announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh for each of the families of the deceased, they said.

Tarn Taran alone accounted for 63 deaths, followed by 12 in Amritsar and 11 in Gurdaspur’s Batala. Till Friday night, the state had reported 39 deaths in the tragedy unfolding since Wednesday night.

According to an official statement, the CM ordered the suspension of seven excise officials, along with six policemen.

Among the suspended officials are two deputy superintendents of police and four station house officers.

Strict action will be taken against any public servant or others found complicit in the case, said the chief minister, describing the police and excise department failure to check the manufacturing and sale of spurious liquor as shameful.

Nobody will be allowed to get away with feeding poison to our people, he added.
