Lucknow, August 1: A peeved Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav on Tuesday warned the party's elected representatives of some harsh action if they failed to meet people's expectations in Uttar Pradesh. "Nothing much has changed in last two months. Everybody seems to be catering to their own interests. This cannot be allowed any longer. If this continues, we will not be able to face people in the Lok Sabha elections," a stern Mulayam said.

Addressing the first meeting of MLCs and MLAs at the party headquarters here, Mulayam took the ministers head on. "On the very first day of the government formation, I had asked each one of you to make sure that we deliver what we have promised. I have even assured you that those who will take the right initiative will get all support from the government. But I don't see any remarkable change," Mulayam said.

In the presence of the entire top SP leadership, Mulayam expressed dissatisfaction over the manner in which SP MLCs, MLAs and ministers have conducted themselves. "I am watching every one of you and can point out by particular instance where you have faltered," Mulayam said, adding that this was neither in the interest of the party nor people or the politics of the state. "Don't be surprised if you find an unexpected reshuffle in the cabinet if I don't see a change soon," he said looking towards chief minister Akhilesh Yadav. Senior SP leaders including Mohammed Azam Khan, Shivpal Yadav and Ahmed Hasan were among those present in the meeting.

It was here that some unhappy MLAs sitting in the back rows reacted: "Kuch mantriyon ko badal hi dijiye ab (change at least some ministers now)." Mulayam, however, took the comment in his stride despite the displeasure of being interrupted reflecting on his face: "Dekh lijiye ... jab apaski log khush nahi hain to janta ka kya hoga" (See for yourself. Our own people are not happy, what to talk of the people in general)," he said as other senior leaders waved their hands to silence those who had made the remark.

Mulayam had barely completed his sentence when the entire auditorium plunged into darkness following the collapse of three grids. The meeting resumed when power was restored after 15 minutes. "People have given us a clear mandate because they were fed-up with Mayawati's misrule. They have some expectations from us and if we fail to meet them, then I am sure everyone knows what will happen," the SP supremo said. He admitted that there were problems at certain levels in terms of execution of policies. "But people are not bothered, they have voted us and they want results and rightly so," he said.

SP patriarch also cautioned party leaders to exercise restrain on party issues while speaking to the media. "We can sort them internally. Going public does not reflect well on the party's image," Mulayam said. Once again referring to a possible fallout of the failure of ministers and MLAs to deliver, Mulayam said the time is running out and we have to make it soon. "So please get back to your constituencies and ensure that the people start feeling the change. We are here to handle all the difficulties that you face while meeting the development demands of the people," he said.

Bhadohi, Feb 11: With just two days left for the State Budget Session, a widow from Uttar Pradesh''s Bhadohi district has accused BJP MLA Ravindranath Tripathi and six others of sexual harassment over the years, the police said.

The incident is likely to cause considerable embarrassment to the ruling Yogi Adityanath government.

Bhadohi Superintendent of Police (SP) Ram Badan Singh said: "The woman, whose husband died in 2007, met the BJP MLA Ravindranath Tripathi''s nephew in 2014. She said that she was physically exploited by him for many years on the pretext of marriage."

The complainant also said that the nephew then got her lodged in a Bhadohi hotel for about a month during the 2017 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, "where she was raped by the MLA and his other family members".

The case has been handed over to the Additional Superintendent of Police for further investigations.

A case is yet to be registered.

The Uttar Pradesh Budget Session starts from Thursday.

Amaravati, Jan 21: Telugu Desam Party president N Chandrababu Naidu and at least 17 MLAs of his party were taken in police custody late on Monday as they tried to conduct a foot march from the state assembly to nearby Mandadam village in violation of prohibitory orders.

TDP leaders started off on the march after staging a sit-in near the assembly main entrance following the suspension of 17 MLAs from the House for the day.

They were protesting the AP Decentralisation and Inclusive Development of All Regions Bill, 2020, that was passed by the assembly, enabling the establishment of three capitals for the state.

The TDP leaders were taken to the Mangalagiri police station.

Meanwhile, tensions prevailed at the Jana Sena Party headquarters at Mangalagiri as police prevented its president Pawan Kalyan from proceeding to the Amaravati region to speak to protesters fighting for the retention of only one capital for the state.

DIG Kanti Rana Tata and other senior police officials reached the Sena office and blocked the exit of Kalyan and political affairs committee chairman Nadendla Manohar, resulting in an argument.

Kalyan asked how could police impose restrictions within his own office.

Scores of Sena workers gathered outside the office even as a large posse of police was posted to thwart Kalyan and other leaders' plans.

New Delhi, Mar 7: Prime Minister Narendra Modi turned emotional on Saturday when a woman beneficiary of his government's generic medicine programme told him that she had seen God in him.

Dehradun-resident Deepa Shah, who suffered paralysis in 2011, was interacting with the prime minister through video-conference on the occasion of Jan Aushadhi Diwas.

"I have not seen god, but I have seen God in you," she said, tears rolling down her eyes.

Modi was visibly emotional as the woman repeated her remark.

She also thanked the Uttarakhand chief minister and others who had helped her all along and said doctors had once told her that she cannot be cured.

"But on hearing your voice I have become better," she told Modi while profusely thanking the prime minister for his efforts to reduce the cost of medicines.

An emotional prime minister paused for a moment before telling her that it was her courage that had won over her disease and that she must carry on with the spirit.

Shah was expressing her plight and how she had suffered due to high cost of medicines after she suffered from paralysis in 2011 and has now started saving Rs 3,500 every month after benefitting from the government's low-cost generic medicines programme.

Soon after Shah rose to express her views, Modi asked her to sit and speak as he said she was uncomfortable while standing.

"You have defeated disease with your own will power. Your courage is your god and that same courage has given you the strength to emerge from such a big crisis. You should carry on this confidence in you," Modi told her.

He said some people still keep spreading rumours about generic medicines, going by their past experience, wondering how can medicines be available so cheap and that there must be something wrong with the medicine.

"But, by seeing you countrymen would gain confidence that there is nothing wrong in generic medicines. These medicines are not at all of inferior quality than any other medicine. These medicines have been certified by the best laboratories. These medicines are made in India and is 'Make in India' and are cheap," the prime minister said.

He said there is demand for generic medicines from India across the world and the government has made it mandatory for doctors to prescribe generic medicines to patients, unless necessary.
