RSS chief ranked Bihar ahead of Gujarat? Yes, say reporters; no, says RSS

New Delhi, August 10: A group of foreign reporters say that at their meeting with Mohan Bhagwat, the chief of the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS), said that in public perception of effective governance, Bihar is ahead of Gujarat.

"RSS' Mohan Bhagwat's first-ever chat with foreign media. Asked to rate state govts on good governance, he said bihar, gujarat, in that order," tweeted Rama Lakshmi, a journalist with the Washington Post's New Delhi bureau.

The RSS has said Mr Bhagwat has not been quoted correctly. It says that the RSS chief said that the people of each state feel that the model followed by their government is superior.

The controversy lies in the complex and tenuous relationship between the BJP and Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar. They govern Bihar together, and Mr Kumar's party, the JD(U) is also a member of the NDA, the coalition led by the BJP. The last few months have seen open hostility between the chief ministers of Bihar and Gujarat. Mr Kumar has made it clear that he may opt out of the partnership if Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi is picked as the NDA's candidate for Prime Minister for the next general election. Mr Kumar has not named Mr Modi but has said that the NDA's nominee for PM must have secular credentials. Mr Modi's prime ministerial ambitions are challenged by the communal riots that took place in Gujarat in 2002 during his first term as chief minister.

The BJP is keen on preserving its collaboration with Mr Kumar in Bihar. In a recent interview to NDTV, the party's president, Nitin Gadkari, said that he has assured Mr Kumar that the party has not yet decided on whether Mr Modi will be its choice for Prime Minister. Mr Gadkari said he is confident that the Bihar chief minister and his party will not exit the NDA coalition.

New Delhi, Jul 28: India on Wednesday reported 47,704 more COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, taking the country's count of coronavirus cases to 14,83,157, informed the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Out of the total cases, there are 4,96,988 active cases in the country while the number of patients cured/discharged and migrated stands at 9,52,744.

With 654 deaths due to COVID-19 in the country reported in the last 24 hours, the death toll rises to 33,425.

The recovery rate among COVID-19 patients has increased to 64.23 per cent. The recoveries to deaths ratio is 96.6 per cent:3.4 per cent, informed the Centre.

As per the data provided by the Ministry, Maharashtra continues to be the worst-affected state from the infection with 1,48,905 active cases and 13,656 deaths due to COVID-19. Tamil Nadu has a total of 53,703 active cases and 3,494 deaths.

Delhi has a total of 11,904 active cases and 3,827 deaths.

The Health Ministry further informed that more than 5 lakh COVID-19 tests were conducted in a single day over two consecutive days. On 26th July, India tested a total of 5,15,000 samples and on 27th July, a total of 5,28,000 samples were tested.

The total number of COVID-19 samples tested up to July 27 is 1,73,34,885 including 5,28,082 samples tested yesterday, said the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).

New Delhi, May 31: The income tax department has notified forms for filing income tax returns for the financial year 2019-20.

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has notified Sahaj (ITR-1), Form ITR-2, Form ITR-3, Form Sugam (ITR-4), Form ITR-5, Form ITR-6, Form ITR-7 and Form ITR-V for the assessment year 2020-21.

The department has revised the I-T return forms for the financial year 2019-20 to allow assessees to avail benefits of various timeline extension granted by the government following the COVID-19 outbreak.

The government has extended various timelines under the Income Tax Act, 1961, through the Taxation and Other Laws (Relaxation of Certain Provisions) Ordinance, 2020.

Accordingly, the time for making investment or payments for claiming deduction under Chapter-VIA-B of IT Act that include Section 80C (LIC, PPF, NSC etc.), 80D (Mediclaim) and 80G (Donations) for the financial year 2019-20 had been extended to June 30, 2020.

ClearTax founder and CEO Archit Gupta said, "The new forms require a separate table to disclose tax saving investment made in the first quarter of 2020 for availing them in FY 2019-20. Taxpayers must assess their tax liability for FY 2019-20 and make sure they are maximising their Section 80C benefits if not already done so."

New Delhi, Jun 6: With 9,887 new positive cases reported in the last 24 hours, India's COVID-19 count touched 2,36,657 on Saturday surpassing Italy's latest tally of over 2.34 lakh, taking India to the sixth spot among countries with the highest caseloads of the virus.

The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) said that India registered a spike of 9887 new cases and 294 deaths in the past 24 hours taking the tally to 1,15,942 active cases and 6642 deaths.

Today's count was the highest single-day spike in the country, which has now overtaken Italy, according to the tally posted by the Johns Hopkins University which posted that globally the coronavirus had infected over 66.64 lakh people and claimed over 3.91 lakh lives so far.

In india, the MoHFW informed that 1,14,073 persons have been cured/discharged/migrated so far.

Maharashtra remains the worst-hit State as the total number of COVID-19 positive cases reached 80,229. While the total number of active cases in the state stands at 42,224.

In Tamil Nadu, 28,694 cases have been detected so far while Delhi has reported 26,334 coronavirus cases.
