Parliament

New Delhi, August 23: The standoff between Opposition and government over the CAG report on coal block allocation resulted in the wastage of the third consecutive day of Parliament today as BJP was unrelenting on its demand for resignation of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha saw the repeat of scenes witnessed during the past three days, with Opposition members shouting slogans and storming the Well to press their demand, which the ruling side rejected.

No business could be transacted in either House as there were repeated adjournments, before the final one at 2 PM for the day.

Members of BJP, which has said it will not stop its protests till the Prime Minister resigns, spearheaded the slogan-shouting in both the Houses.

AIADMK members joined BJP in the demand in both the Houses. In the Lok Sabha, they trooped into the Well.

Interestingly in the Rajya Sabha, JD-U member Sabir Ali, whose party has been favouring a debate on the issue instead of disruptions, also trooped into the Well with BJP members and shouted slogans.

He had yesterday told reporters outside Parliament that the issue should be discussed in Parliament as public money is involved in the running of the House.

Other members of JD-U -- N K Singh and Shivanand Tiwari -- remained seated when the BJP members raised slogans like "Yeh jo Congress ke chehre pe laali hai, Koyale ki dalali hai (The glow on the face of Congress is because of brokership in coal block allocation)."

Congress members countered the Opposition's slogan of 'Pradhan Mantri Istifa Do (Prime Minister Resign)' by shouting Pradhan Mantri Zindabad (Hail the Prime Minister).

The Rajya Sabha saw three adjournments till 2 PM, while there were two adjournments in the Lok Sabha. When uproar continued at 2 PM, the Houses were adjourned till tomorrow.

New Delhi, Jul 11: Poll strategist Prashant Kishor took a swipe at Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Saturday, saying this is time to fight the coronavirus not elections and that he should not endanger people's lives in a "hurry" to hold the assembly polls.

"The coronavirus situation in Bihar is worsening like it is in many other states of the country. But a big part of government machinery and resources are busy making preparation for the polls.

"Nitish Kumar ji, this isn't time to fight elections but the coronavirus. Don't endanger people's lives in this hurry to hold the polls," he tweeted.

Kishor, once a confidant of the JD(U) president before he turned a critic and was expelled from the party, joins leaders like LJP chief Chirag Paswan and RJD's Tejashwi Yadav in suggesting that the Bihar assembly polls should be deferred due to the pandemic.

Polls in Bihar are due in October-November but the Election Commission has so far not made any official announcement about its schedule.

The BJP and the JD(U) have been holding organisational meetings and said that they are ready for the elections.

Jammu, Jan 15: Fresh landslides kept the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway shut for the third consecutive day on Wednesday, leaving over 5000 vehicles stranded.

"There were four fresh landslides in Digdol and Panthiyal belts on the highway in Ramban district. The traffic on the highway remained closed for the third day today", a police officer told PTI.

On Monday, heavy rains triggered shooting of stones in Moumpassi, Digdole and Panthiyal areas, forcing a suspension of the traffic, the official said.

Snowfall in Kashmir side of the highway, including Jawahar Tunnel, since Sunday has resulted in blockade of the highway.

"No fresh traffic was allowed from Nagrota in Jammu for Kashmir", he said.

As a result of the blockade of the highway, over 5000 vehicles remained stranded at various places en route from Lakhanpur in Kathua district to Banihal belt of Ramban district and also on the Kashmir side.

New Delhi, Feb 13: The BJP's Amit Shah today said statements like "goli maaro" and "Indo-Pak match" should not have been made by BJP leaders ahead of the Delhi elections.

The BJP may have suffered in the elections because of hate statements made by party leaders, he said, reported news agency Press Trust of India.

The party, he said, had distanced itself from such remarks.
