Check government's attack on CAG, BJP tells president

New Delhi, September 12: A delegation of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders met President Pranab Mukherjee Wednesday and asked him to intervene and check the government's repeated attacks on the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG).

 

"We met the president and said it is important for you to intervene and advise government that it is not proper to attack the CAG," BJP leader L.K. Advani told reporters after the meeting.

 

"He said he would look into the matter and take appropriate action," he said. "Our fight against corruption will continue, but the way a constitutional body is being attacked, we are afraid constitutional authorities are being made weak," he said.

 

Sushma Swaraj, Arun Jaitley and Murli Manohar Joshi were amongst those who accompanied Advani to the meeting.  CAG, in its recent report, has claimed a presumptive loss of Rs.1.86 lakh crore ($38 billion) due to allocation of coal blocks instead of auctioning them. The prime minister was in charge of the coal ministry for a major part between 2004 and 2009.

 

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, in a statement, called CAG's findings "flawed on multiple counts" and said the findings were "clearly disputable".

May 11: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday said many states were amending labour laws, but the fight against the novel coronavirus pandemic cannot be an excuse to exploit workers, suppress their voice and crush their human rights.

Gandhi said there cannot be any compromise on the basic principles by allowing unsafe workplaces.

"Many states are amending labour laws. We are together fighting against corona, but this cannot be an excuse to crush human rights, allow unsafe workplaces, exploit workers and suppress their voice," he said.

"There cannot be any compromise on these basic principles," he added.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh also said it would be dangerous and disastrous to loosen labour, land and environment laws in the name of economic revival and stimulus.

"In the name of economic revival and stimulus, it will be dangerous and disastrous to loosen labour, land and environmental laws and regulations as the Modi govt is planning.

"The first steps have already been taken. This is a quack remedy like demonetisation," Ramesh tweeted.

New Delhi, Feb 27: The death toll in the communal violence in northeast Delhi over the amended citizenship law reached 32 on Thursday, senior officials said.

It was at 27 till Wednesday night.

"Five more deaths recorded at GTB Hospital, so death toll at that hospital has gone up to 30, taking total toll to 32," a senior Delhi Health Department official told news agency.

The Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan Hospital had reported two fatalities on Wednesday.

New Delhi, May 29: With the highest spike of 7,466 more COVID-19 cases and 175 deaths reported in the past 24 hours, India's COVID-19 tally reached 1,65,799 on Friday, according to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

The number of active coronavirus cases stands at 89,987 while 71,105 people have been cured or recovered and one patient has migrated, it said. The death toll due to the infection has reached 4,706 in the country.

Maharashtra is the worst affected state with 59,546 cases. Tamil Nadu has recorded as many as 19,372 cases while Gujarat and Delhi have recorded 15,562 and 16,281 coronavirus cases respectively.
