Surajkund (Haryana), September 26: With Trinamool Congress walking out of the ruling UPA and NCP threatening to follow suit, BJP top brass on Wednesday asked party leaders to stand united and remain battle-ready as the prospects of early polls loom large in the current political scenario.

In his inaugural address at BJP national executive here, party president Nitin Gadkari asked his party to prepare for polls as the Congress-led UPA government is a “sinking ship” and the people have lost all love for it.

“The national President conveyed in his speech the uncertain current political scenario...He said the nation is on the verge of change. Elections can be held anytime,” BJP chief spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad told reporters.

Significantly, Mr. Gadkari asked his party leaders to show “large-heartedness, be united and make all efforts to meet the target (of coming to power)“.

The main opposition party has several senior leaders vying to become BJP’s prime ministerial candidate.

“Gadkari discussed the current political scenario. This government is in the state of uncertainty. If the government falls of its own, BJP will not come to save this government,” Mr. Prasad said.

Asked if the BJP is ready to face polls, Mr. Prasad asserted, “BJP is ready for polls. If polls are held within one month, we are ready.”

Mr. Prasad said in view of the current situation the BJP president asked partymen to motivate themselves together towards the “big goal” of coming up to the expectations of the people, as the nation was “standing on the verge of change“.

Mr. Gadkari appealed to all partymen to strengthen the party and stand united in a bid to achieve the goal of wresting power from the UPA. The BJP president termed Congress as a “sinking ship“.

Replying to a media poser on the crisis in Maharashtra where NCP ministers have quit the government, Mr. Prasad said, “Since the UPA government is a sinking ship led by the Congress party, most of the allies are seeking avenues to leave the government and therefore we see the repeated spell of uncertainty.”

“BJP’s job is not to protect the Congress government, which is falling by itself,” he added.

BJP alleged that there has been an “institutionalisation of corruption” in the UPA government along with subversion of democratic and constitutional institutions like the PAC and the JPC.

“UPA has also done marketisation of coalition politics. Every coalition partner is subjected to a price mechanism,” Mr. Prasad said.

Claiming that BJP states were “better” ruled, he said, “BJP does not need a Congress certificate for good governance“.

On the Prime Minister’s remarks reminding the nation of the 1991 economic crisis, Prasad said the BJP-run states were doing well, recording higher growth even in such a negative scenario.

Mr. Prasad said Mr. Gadkari reminded the party cadre of “Good governance” during the Vajpayee-led NDA government where he used the “mantra of economics, environment, ecology and ethics“.

“Economic management giving due importance to ecology, environment and ethical considerations and this sums up good governance,” he said, adding that, “BJP has proved its record of governance, reform, pro-people policies and equitable growth.

Seeking to rope in more allies in the NDA in the coming times, he lashed out at the Congress for using CBI as an “instrument of Congress ally management“.

On the Congress President’s allegation that BJP was spreading canards, the BJP spokesperson said, “We reject it with contempt”.

'Will scrap FDI if voted to power'

Seeking to put at rest speculation on its stand on FDI in multi-brand retail, BJP on Wednesday said it is opposed to the proposal in toto and indicated that it will scrap the policy if the NDA comes to power.

Amid reports that Shiromani Akali Dal President and Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal, who is a key NDA ally, has softened his stand on FDI in multi-brand retail, BJP on Wednesday said it is opposed to the proposal completely as it is against the interest of the farming community.

The principal opposition party clarified that it is not a question of the quantum of FDI to be allowed and the party is fully against it.

Party president Nitin Gadkari elaborated on this point in his inaugural address at the BJP’s National Executive Meet here.

“We are opposed to FDI in multi-brand retail and once we come to power, the consequences will follow,” BJP chief Spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad said, indicating that the NDA will do away with the policy even if the UPA government implements it.

Asked about the agenda for good governance released by BJP before the 2004 general elections which said the party favours 26 per cent FDI in multi-brand retail, Mr. Prasad said.

“Leave it to us. 2004 is eight years ago. Wait for our manifesto. Mr. Gadkari categorically opposed FDI in multi-brand retail.”

The Union Cabinet had approved 51 per cent FDI in multi-brand retail and the government has stated firmly that there will be no rollback of the proposal despite ally TMC withdrawing support to the UPA regime.

Mr. Badal was quoted as saying in the media that had the government not forced reforms on it and acted like a “dictator”, the party may have welcomed FDI in multi-brand retail.

Asked about Mr. Badal’s comments, Mr. Prasad said, “We keep talking to Sukhbir Badal and have held discussions with him on this issue also. There is no difference (of opinion between us) at all.”

“BJP is of the firm view that FDI in multi-brand retail is not in the interest of India and that is the view of NDA as well,” he added.

Earlier, in his speech Mr. Gadkari had maintained that FDI in multi-brand retail in not good for the farming community and India’s retail chain.

BJP insisted that it is not against reforms and is proud of its “record of governance, reforms, pro-people policies and equitable growth”.

The party pointed out that there are several hurdles in the implementation of the UPA decision on FDI in multi-brand retail, saying India is a signatory to bilateral agreements with 82 countries where it cannot stop foreign multinationals from entering certain states if it is allowing domestic companies to set up shop.

BJP said the Kerala High Court verdict, which said FDI in multi-brand retail cannot be allowed, will also have to be respected. All the BJP and NDA ruled states are opposed to the policy.

New Delhi, Apr 23: Delhi Police has booked Jamia students Meeran Haider and Safoora Zargar under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) in a case related to communal violence in northeast Delhi over the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, said a lawyer.

Haider and Zargar, arrested for allegedly hatching a conspiracy to incite the communal riots in February, are in judicial custody. While Zargar is the media coordinator of Jamia Coordination Committee, Haider is a member of the committee.

The police has also booked Jawaharlal Nehru University student leader Umar Khalid under the UAPA in the case, said advocate Akram Khan who is representing Haider in the case.

Haider (35) is a PhD student and the president of RJD youth wing's Delhi unit, while Zargar is an MPhil student of Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) university.

In the FIR, the police has claimed that the communal violence was a "premeditated conspiracy" which was allegedly hatched by Khalid and two others.

The students have also been booked for the offences of sedition, murder, attempt to murder, promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion and rioting.

Khalid had allegedly given provocative speeches at two different places and appealed to the citizens to come out on streets and block the roads during the visit of US President Donald Trump to spread propaganda at international level about how minorities in India are being , the FIR alleged.

In this conspiracy, firearms, petrol bombs, acid bottles and stones were collected at numerous homes, the FIR claimed.

Co-accused Danish was given the responsibility to gather people from two different places to take part in the riots, the police alleged.

Women and children were made to block the roads under the Jafrabad metro station on February 23 to create tension amidst the neighbourhood people, it said.

Over 20 film personalities, including Anurag Kashyap, Vishal Bhardwaj, Mahesh Bhatt and Ratna Pathak Shah, on Sunday had released a statement raising their voice against the arrest of the students and activists by Delhi Police for protesting against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and demanded their release.

Following this, the police had said investigations into the JMI violence and northeast Delhi riot cases were done impartially, and arrests were made after analysis of forensic evidence.

In December last year, the police had allegedly entered the JMI campus after protests over the CAA, being held a few metres away from the varsity, turned violent.

Rajya Sabha MP and RJD leader Manoj Jha had tweeted, "Delhi Police called him for investigation and then received orders from above and arrested Meeran Haider, who has been helping people during the time of coronavirus outbreak."

The Jamia Coordination Committee (JCC), a group comprising students and alumni from the varsity, had condemned the arrest and demanded his immediate release.

"The country is facing a massive health crisis, however, the state machinery is busy harassing and framing student activists in false cases to suppress voices of dissent," they said.

The JCC said Haider was diligently working to provide ration to the needy during the lockdown. Communal clashes had broken out in northeast Delhi on February 24 after violence between citizenship law supporters and protesters spiralled out of control leaving at least 53 people dead and around 200 injured.

Ahmedabad, Jul 5: A woman police sub-inspector (PSI) with Ahmedabad Police was arrested and sent to three-day police remand, on Saturday, for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 20 lakh from an Ahmedabad-based businessman — accused in two rape cases — in exchange for not applying a stringent act against him.

According to police officials, Shweta Jadeja, PSI and incharge of Mahila police station (West) in the city, was arrested by a team of Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) officials in Ahmedabad on Friday after the complainant in the case, the rape accused, approached the Crime Branch and stated that Jadeja had allegedly demanded Rs 35 lakh form him, in exchange for not booking him under the Prevention of Anti-Social Activities (PASA) Act.

The PASA Act in Gujarat gives power to the police to detain an accused and send them to a prison away from their native district. The complainant claimed that he already paid Rs 20 lakh of the total amount to Jadeja on February 3.

On Saturday, a sessions court awarded Jadeja a three-day remand with the Crime Branch, which will end at 11:30 am on July 7. Following this, the PSI will undergo a medical check-up and be presented before the magistrate again.

“We had originally demanded a seven-day remand. The accused officer has been sent to three-day remand for further investigation in the case,” said a senior police official in Ahmedabad.

According to police, complainant Kenal Shah — managing director of GSP Crop Science Private Limited, a crop solution-based company in Ahmedabad — is allegedly facing two separate rape cases under IPC section 376.

PSI Jadeja was first entrusted with the investigation of a rape case against Shah in January this year, lodged at Mahila police station (West).

The rape case complaint is of 2019. Another rape case against Shah was being probed by Assistant Commissioner of Police (Crimes Against Women), Mini Josef, wherein the investigation was reportedly completed.

As per the remand application report filed by the police, Jadeja had allegedly threatened Shah through his brother Bhavesh Shah — a joint managing director at GSP Crop Science Private Limited — and initially demanded Rs 25 lakh for not applying the PASA Act against the accused. The bribe amount was then settled at Rs 20 lakh and in February, the accused allegedly paid the amount via an office accountant to one Jayubha, allegedly a representative of Jadeja, from a finance office in Jamjodhpur area of Ahmedabad.

The report further stated that after the initial amount was paid, a third complaint was allegedly made against Kenal by a security officer at his office, Yograjsinh, for criminal intimidation. After the third complaint, PSI Jadeja had contacted Bhavesh again and demanded an additional sum of Rs 15 lakh for not applying the PASA Act against Kenal. The complaint from the security officer was not converted into an FIR and Shah has not been jailed yet.

However, It was after the demand of Rs 15 lakh that complainant Kenal approached the Crime Branch on June 27. An FIR was lodged against Jadeja at Ahmedabad DCB police station under sections seven and twelve of the Prevention of Corruption Act, charging her for “public servant taking gratification other than legal remuneration in respect of an official act”.

“Now that we have received the remand of the accused officer from the court, we will try to trace and recover the alleged Rs 20 lakh amount she received in this case,” said Deepan Bhadran, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Ahmedabad.

Shweta Jadeja is a PSI of the 2016-’17 batch and a resident of Vastrapur in Ahmedabad, while her native place is in Keshod of Junagadh district. The police have not recovered the bribe amount she allegedly accepted as of late Saturday.
