Maharashtra stalemate: Sharad Pawar meets nephew Ajit Pawar

Mumbai, September 28: Ahead of a crucial meeting of NCP legislature party to discuss the resignation of Ajit Pawar, party president Sharad Pawar today met the deputy chief minister whose stepping down has plunged the Congress-NCP coalition government in Maharashtra into a crisis.

The meeting is underway at the Worli residence of Union minister Praful Patel.

Ajit Pawar had quit his post on Tuesday following media reports about his involvement in alleged irregularities in the irrigation department when he held the irrigation portfolio between 1999-2009. All other 19 NCP ministers followed suit as a mark of solidarity with Pawar.

The NCP suspects that chief minister Prithviraj Chavan was behind the "leak" of "damaging information" to the Opposition which found its way to the media.

Pawar is to meet the party ministers, who have given their resignations to the state unit president Madhukar Pichad, and legislators later in the day.

The NCP legislators and ministers had unanimously adopted a resolution on Wednesday requesting Ajit Pawar to withdraw his resignation.

The NCP legislature party meeting is likely to bring curtains down on the four-day drama.

There were indications that Ajit Pawar's resignation would be accepted after Sharad Pawar yesterday said the issue of Deputy CM's resignation was over for the party.

However, all other 19 ministers are likely be asked to continue.

Sharad Pawar may also meet the chief minister to discuss the prevailing political situation before the NCP legislature party meeting. Chavan has still not accepted Ajit Pawar's resignation.

Amit Shah tests positive for covid-19, admitted to hospital

New Delhi, Aug 2: Union Home Minister Amit Shah today tested positive for COVID-19 coronavirus infection and has been admitted to a hospital.

Shah took to social media today to inform about his infection. “I have tested positive but my health is fine," he said, adding that he has been hospitalised on the assistance of doctors.

The Union Home Minister also appealed to those who came into close contact with him in the last few days to get themselves tested for COVID-19.

PM Modi, Jordan king discuss challenges posed by COVID-19

New Delhi, Apr 17: Prime minister Narendra Modi on Thursday held talks with Jordan King Abdullah II and discussed the challenges posed to the world by the COVID-19 pandemic.

"The two leaders discussed the challenges posed to the world by the COVID-19 pandemic, and the steps being taken in their respective countries to limit its impact," an official statement said.

Prime Minister conveyed his greetings to Abdullah II and the people of Jordan for the upcoming Holy month of Ramadan which commences late next week.

The leaders agreed that their teams would remain in touch on issues related to COVID-19, as well as on other regional and global issues.

Guj lockdown: Over 400 detained for violations, says DGP

Ahmedabad, Mar 24: The Gujarat police has detained 426 people in the last 24 hours for violating lockdown rules in force in the state to combat the novel coronavirus outbreak, a senior official said on Tuesday.

They include those who came out despite being advised home quarantine, state Director General of Police Shivanand Jha said.

"The lockdown met with around 90 per cent success. We are taking strict measures to implement the lockdown in the remaining 10-15 per cent areas. We have lodged 238 cases related to the violation of police notification and 127 cases related to quarantine rule violation. In all, we have detained 426 persons across the state," Jha told reporters in Gandhinagar.

"For better implementation of the lockdown and to address issues concerning people, we have set up a dedicated 24-hour control room and appointed two additional DGP rank officers to supervise operations. Three teams under them would work to resolve issues across the state," said Jha.

He said police commissioners and districts SPs have been asked to enforce the lockdown in an effective manner.

Essential services like vegetable and milk shops are allowed to remain open, he said, and asked people not to flock in large numbers to such shops.

The state has so far reported 33 COVID-19 cases, and one person has died of the infection.
