Government stands by Salman Khurshid, says he won't resign

New Delhi, October 15: Even as India Against Corruption (IAC) activist Arvind Kejriwal refuses to give up on his demand for Law Minister Salman Khurshid's resignation, the government continues to stand by Khurshid. Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni, MoS in the PMO Narayanasamy and Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh have defended him. "I am confident that my very good friend and colleague and one of the most decent human beings I have ever known will emerge from this wholly manufactured ordeal with his honour and integrity intact," Jairam Ramesh said.

The Congress party has said that there is no question of Khurshid stepping down. The party feels Khurshid's resignation would only strengthen Kejriwal's campaign and set a precedent in case other Congress ministers are named by Kejriwal in future.

The Congress strategy now is to speak to allies like NCP chief Sharad Pawar to get them on board. Khurshid will file lawsuits against Kejriwal and TV Today. Khurshid, who was in London, arrived in Delhi on Sunday morning and demanded that Kejriwal and TV Today Chairman and MD Aroon Purie should resign.

Khurshid addressed a press conference along with his wife presenting pictures and list of camps the trust held for differently-abled at various places as proof. Khurshid, flanked by his wife Louise who is the Project Director of the Zakir Hussain Trust, said the Uttar Pradesh government, at their behest, was already probing whether an affidavit signed by a state government official JB Singh carried forged signatures as has been alleged.

However, Kejriwal claimed the photographs were of an event held later. Kejriwal has claimed to produce more proof against Khurshid at 11 am on Monday.

Leaders are feeling suffocated in Cong: Amit Shah asks party to self-introspect

New Delhi, Jun 25: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday hit out at Congress for "unceremoniously sacking" its spokesperson and said that leaders in the opposition party are "feeling suffocated".

To substantiate his point, Shah referred to the recent Congress Working Committee (CWC) meet in which senior members and younger members raised a few issues, however, they were "shut down".

Taking to Twitter, Shah posted two English dailies' articles titled -- "Not scared of PM Modi, but many in the party dodge him: Rahul at Congress Working Committee meet" and "Congress removes Sanjay Jha as party spokesperson after critical article".

Last week, Jha was dropped as AICC spokesperson and Abhishek Dutt and Sadhna Bharti appointed as National Media Panelist of Congress party.

"During the recent CWC meet, senior members and younger members raised a few issues. But, they were shouted down. A party spokesperson was unceremoniously sacked. The sad truth is - leaders are feeling suffocated in Congress," the Union Minister tweeted.

Meanwhile, Shah also targetted Congress on the completion of 45 years of emergency, which was imposed by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on June 25, 1975 and asked the party to self introspect.

"As one of India's opposition parties, Congress needs to ask itself: Why does the Emergency mindset remain? Why are leaders who do not belong to 1 dynasty unable to speak up? Why are leaders getting frustrated in Congress? Else, their disconnect with people will keep widening," he wrote.

BJP says Make in India but buys from China: Rahul Gandhi

New Delhi, Jun 30: Amid calls for boycotting Chinese products after India-China face-off in eastern Ladakh, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government claiming that imports from China have increased under the NDA regime.

"Facts don't lie. BJP says: Make in India. BJP does: Buy from China," Gandhi tweeted along with a graphic of the percentage of imports from China during the UPA rule and the NDA government.

The graphic claims that imports from China were at 12-13 per cent when the Congress-led UPA government vacated office in 2014 but now stood at 17-18 per cent in 2020.

The Congress leader has been vehemently targeting the Centre on the India-China border situation after 20 Indian soldiers were killed in violent face-off with Chinese troops in Ladakh's Galwan valley earlier this month.

Indian intercepts have revealed that the Chinese side suffered 43 casualties, including dead and seriously injured, in the face-off.

Nirbhaya convict Mukesh Kumar moves mercy plea before President

New Delhi, Jan 14: One of the four Nirbhaya gang rape convicts, who are scheduled to be hanged on January 22, moved a mercy plea before President Ram Nath Kovind to set aside the death sentence issued against him.

He also moved the Delhi High Court to set aside the death warrant issued by a trial court. This hearing is scheduled for Wednesday before a bench of Justices Manmohan and Sangita Dhingra Sehgal.

The petition, filed through advocate Vrinda Grover, seeks setting aside of the January 7 order issuing the warrant of his execution.
