New Delhi, October 15: Seeking to defend his colleague, Union Steel Minister Beni Prasad Verma on Monday put his foot in his mouth saying a man like Salman Khurshid will not do any wrong for Rs. 71 lakh, which is a “very samll amount” for a Central Minister.

“Salman Khursid is a responsible person. He is a Central Minister. He was a Central Minister earlier as well. When he is saying there is no scam, he should be believed... I don’t think a person like Khurshid will do anything for an amount like Rs. 71 lakh. It is a very small amount for a Central Minister,” he told reporters here.

Mr Verma was commenting on the alleged misappropriation of funds by a trust run by Mr Khurshid and his wife. In a press conference on Sunday, Mr Khurshid had rejected the allegation and had offered himself to any probe.

“If it would have been Rs. 71 crore, even I would have been serious,” Mr Verma said adding Mr Khurshid should not resign from his current position.

Mr Verma trained his guns on activist-turned-politician Arvind Kejriwal who has been demanding the resignation of Mr Khurshid on the issue.

“Kejriwal is going to launch a party. I have all the best wishes for him. India has a multi-party system and one more will come. It’s good. But, I have a piece of advice for him: Don’t bark day in day out, try sometimes to roar like a tiger. Those who always bark are of no value,” Mr Verma said.

Jammu, Jan 18: Prepaid mobile connections were restored in Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday and 2G services resumed in two districts of the valley after being disconnected on August 5 last year. Voice and SMS facilities were restored for all local prepaid mobile phones across the Union territory.

Rohit Kansal, the principal secretary to the administration of Jammu and Kashmir said the order will come into effect from Saturday.

In order to consider giving mobile Internet connectivity on such SIM cards, the telecom service providers will have to verify the credentials of the subscribers, he said.

Internet service providers have been asked to provide fixed line Internet connectivity in all the 10 districts of Jammu region and two districts, Kupwara and Bandipora, in North Kashmir.

Telecom services were shut in the entire Jammu and Kashmir on August 5 when the Centre abrogated special status to the erstwhile state and also bifurcated it into two Union Territories.

However, the Supreme Court came down heavily on the UT administration last week for arbitrarily shutting down the Internet, the facility described as the fundamental right by the apex court.
