Unattractive rural women can't win polls: Mulayam Singh

Barabanki/ Lucknow, November 9: Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav kicked up a row with his remark that rural women will not benefit from the Women Reservation Bill because they are not as attractive as those from the affluent class.

Mulayam, whose party is in power in Uttar Pradesh and is an outside supporter of UPA government, made the comment while articulating his opposition to the long pending Women Reservation Bill.

"Bade bade gharon ki ladkiya aur mahilayan kewal upar ja sakti hain...yaad rakhna...apko mauka nahi milega..hamare gaon ki mahila me akarshan itna nahin...,"(Only girls and women from affluent class can go forward...remember this..you (rural women) will not get a chance...Our rural women did not have that much attraction)," he said at a rally in Barabanki yesterday.

Mulayam made the remark while claiming that if the Bill is passed, women belonging to the affluent class will march ahead while those from poor background will be further pushed back.

The row over Mulayam's comment was a throwback to the controversy over his remark--dubbed as sexist--in 2010 that if the Women's Reservation Bill is passed it will fill Parliament with the kind of women who invite catcalls and whistles.

Mulayam, whose party was then in the Opposition, had drawn flak from political parties and women's groups.

At the meeting in Barabanki, Mulayam said he opposed the bill since it will benefit only the affluent class and those belonging to weaker sections will be further suppressed.

The Bill proposes 33 per cent reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies.

BJP spokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman condemned Mulayam's remark and said there is a need to get out of the "mindset" of looking at women from the prism of whether they are attractive. "We are not a commodity, women have a big contribution to make," she added.

Talking to reporters today at a sidelines of a function in Lucknow, Mulayam said his party could consider supporting the Bill if Dalits, Muslims and backward classes were also taken care of under its ambit.

"I have opposed the Bill earlier...It has been amended and if Dalits, Muslims and backward class are taken care of in it, we can consider supporting it," he added.

"We always feel that men and women should work shoulder to shoulder but women are still suppressed in the society," he added.

Motera, Feb 23: A day before US President Donald Trump's visit to Ahmedabad, a makeshift VVIP entry gate erected outside the newly-built cricket stadium in Motera area here collapsed due to gusty winds on Sunday morning, an official said.

The entire incident was recorded by a bystander and aired on local television channels.

The makeshift entry gate was made of welded steel rods and covered in flex banners.

After some time, a portion of another makeshift gate structure at the stadium's main entrance also collapsed due to the windy weather, another official said.

No one was injured in both the incidents and work was underway to put the structures back in place, he said.

"The (VVIP) entry gate collapsed when fabrication work was going on. It was not a major incident. No one was injured in the incident," said Special Commissioner of Police, Crime Branch, Ajay Tomar said.

President Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi will participate in a roadshow here on Monday and later address the 'Namaste Trump' event at the Sardar Patel Stadium in Motera area where over one lakh people are expected to be present.

The stadium has already received 'Building Use' permission from the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, an official earlier said.

It is the world's largest stadium with a capacity to accommodate 1.10 lakh spectators.

The stadium has been rebuilt after demolishing the old one which had a seating capacity of 49,000 spectators.

New Delhi, Jan 5: Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram on Sunday sàid it was "shameful" that Sadaf Jafar, SR Darapuri and Pavan Rao were arrested by the Uttar Pradesh Police for violence without any evidence against them.

He also said that it was a shocking admission by the police that there is no evidence of their involvement.

"Sadaf Jafar, S R Darapuri and Pavan Rao Ambedkar released on bail after police ADMITTED no evidence of their involvement in violence. Shocking admission," he said on Twitter.

"If that were so, why did the police arrest them in the first place? And how did the Magistrate remand them to custody without looking at the evidence," he asked.
"The law says 'find evidence, then arrest'. The reality is 'first arrest, then search for evidence'. Shameful," Chidambaram tweeted.
