PGIMER Chandigarh paper leak hits 10,000 postgraduate medical aspirants

Chandigarh, November 11: A racket in leaking question papers and assisting students during the MD/MS examinations of Chandigarh's prestigious Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research was busted by the CBIon Saturday. The scam has not only rocked the premier institute but left the fate of about 10,000 aspirants uncertain. It has also raised questions over the invigilation process at centres selected by PGI to conduct the test.

The CBI arrested 14 men and women, including 31-year-old P Guirivi Reddy from Andhra Pradesh, described as the kingpin of the racket. Reddy was earlier arrested for running a similar racket in his state during the Engineering and Medical Common Entrance Test (EAMCET) in 2009.

All 14 arrested are from Andhra

All the 14 people arrested by the CBI on Saturday for the paper leak and exam scam are from Andhra Pradesh.

Among them was P Guirivi Reddy, who was arrested for a similar racket in Andhra Pradesh in 2009. While Reddy and six others were arrested from a city hotel, seven candidates — all girls — were nabbed from four different examination centers in the city. All of them have been booked for forgery and cheating.

On Saturday morning, CBI sleuths swooped down on the hotel and nabbed Reddy and his accomplices while he was dictating answers to seven students over his phone. A scanned copy of the question paper, allegedly mailed by one of the candidates, was on his laptop.

CBI DIG Mahesh Aggarwal, explaining the modus operandi, told TOI that one of the candidates had clicked photos of the question paper with a spy camera and mailed it to Reddy. "The camera and phone were hidden in her undergarments. The photo was mailed to Reddy's laptop in the 'control room' by the girl," said Aggarwal.

"Reddy then acquired answers to the questions on phone from experts in Hyderabad and Patna. The answers could be heard by the girls through earphones cleverly hidden in their hair, which had been left open," Aggarwal added. According to Aggarwal, each candidate paid between Rs 1 lakh and 2.50 lakh to Reddy.

New Delhi, Apr 21: India's count of positive coronavirus cases reached 18,985 after 1,329 new cases were reported in the last 24 hours, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said on Tuesday.

Out of the total cases, 15,122 are active cases, 3,259 have been discharged or cured and one has migrated. With 44 new deaths reported in the last 24 hours, the toll stands at 603.

As per the evening update by the ministry, Maharashtra continues to be the worst-hit state with 4,669 cases, out of which 572 patients have been discharged and cured and 232 deaths.

Delhi's total count of confirmed cases stand at 2,081, which includes 431 cured or discharged cases and 47 deaths.

Gujarat has reported a total of 2,066 positive COVID-19 cases, out of which 131 patients have recovered or discharged, while 77 patients have lost their lives.

Madhya Pradesh's count of COVID-19 cases stand at 1,540, including 127 cured or discharged cases and 76 deaths.

Rajasthan has so far reported 1,576 positive cases, out of which 205 patients have recovered or discharged and 25 people have lost their lives.

Tamil Nadu's COVID-19 figure has risen to 1,520, with 457 patients recovered and 17 fatalities. Uttar Pradesh has reported 1,294 cases, out of which 140 patients have recovered and 20 are dead.

New Delhi, Jul 3: India reported the highest ever single-day spike of 20,903 COVID-19 cases in 24 hours on Friday, said the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

With these new cases, India's coronavirus tally has risen to 6,25,544 cases of which 2,27,439 patients are active cases while 3,79,892 patients have been cured/discharged/migrated.

379 more deaths due to COVID-19 were reported in the country in the last 24 hours, taking the number of deaths due to the infection to 18,213.

As per the Health Ministry, Maharashtra -- the worst-affected state from the virus -- has a total of 1,86,626 cases including 8,178 fatalities while Tamil Nadu has 98,392 coronavirus cases in the state inclusive of 1,321 fatalities.

Delhi has reported 92,175 cases so far inclusive of 2,864 patients succumbing to the virus.

The Indian Council of Medical Research on Friday said that the total number of samples tested till July 2 is 92,97,749 of which 2,41,576 samples were tested on Thursday.

New Delhi, May 6: The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) has extended the validity of electronic way (E-way) bills, whose expiry date fell between March 20 and April 15, till May 31.

"Notification No. 40/2020-Central Tax issued to extend the validity of e-way bills till May 31 for all those e-way bills which were generated on or before March 24, 2020 and had expiry between the period from March 20 to April 15, 2020," the CBIC tweeted on Tuesday.

E-way bill is produced by transporters and businessmen before a Goods and Services Tax (GST) inspector for moving goods worth over Rs 50,000 from one state to another.
