New Delhi, November 17: A day after the Congress asked Rahul Gandhi to lead the election campaign, its UPA ally Samajwadi Party on Friday declared names of 55 candidates for Lok Sabha constituencies in Uttar Pradesh, adding to wide-spread speculation that the polling may take place much before 2014.

Officially, United Progressive Alliance (UPA) allies are desisting from making a statement on early elections as it would go against the Central government, but some of them, including Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Mulayam Singh Yadav and Nationalist Congress Party president Sharad Yadav, have been asking their party leaders and cadres to be prepared to face early elections.

In October, Sharad Pawar, while addressing his state level party convention, asked his colleagues to be prepared for a mid-term elections in view of “unstable situation” at the Centre. He had said that there was always a chance of “political accidents”.

The release of the first list of 55 candidates so early by the SP, which is extending outside support to the UPA government, has fuelled speculations that the party's support may not last till the current Lok Sabha's term ends.

“Mulayam has been telling the party workers to be ready for early poll and the list certainly signals that he may actually be preparing himself for it,” quipped a senior SP leader in Lucknow soon after the list was released.

The CPM, too, on Friday said the general election may be advanced as the ruling party wants to "cut its losses" in major states where it is in power.

"Their (Congress) house in not in order. All the states where they have more MPs are in a state of crisis, like in Andhra Pradesh. They may want to go in for early poll to cut their losses," senior CPM leader Sitaram Yechury told reporters.

The BJP also said it is ready for early elections.

The Congress, however, dismissed all the speculations. Information and Broadcasting Minster Manish Tewari said speculations about mid-term polls had always been there ever since UPA II came to power. “The government has been elected for five years,” he said.

Agreeing with his colleague Tiwari, Congress spokesperson Rashid Alvi, however, maintained that as a political party, it is always ready for elections.

An SP leader said that Mulayam now “earnestly” wants early elections. “He wants to make hay while the sun shines. Mulayam feels that if the elections are to be held in the next few months, his party will stand to gain.''

Mulayam, however, knows only too well that Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP)?supremo Mayawati may not like early poll. “Mayawati will prefer to face the electorate in 2014 as she feels that by that time, Akhilesh Yadav's charm will have vanished'', said a BSP leader.

While Mulayam's withdrawal of support from the Centre may not cause any immediate problem for the UPA, it will certainly make it more vulnerable. It remains to be seen if Mulayam was merely resorting to “pressure tactic” by early release of the list of his nominees.

Dehradun, Jan 6: Universities are centres of learning and will not be allowed to become "addas" of politics, HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal 'Nishank' has said.

The minister was replying to questions from reporters in Haldwani on Sunday about protests against the amended Citizenship Act across university campuses.

"Universities are centres of learning where the country's future is in the making. We cannot let them become addas of politics," Nishank said.

He accused the opposition parties of trying to turn the universities into hotbeds of politics.

The new legislation passed by Parliament aims to grant citizenship to persecuted religious minorities from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan who had taken refuge in India and there is nothing wrong in it, the Union Minister said

"When Pakistan was created, the population of religious minorities there stood at 22 per cent. Today it is a minuscule 3.7 per cent. Persecuted on the basis of their religion, they sought sanctuary in India. The CAA is meant only to grant them citizenship," he said.

Terming the law humanitarian, the minister said it was going to make no difference to the status of Muslims in India and wondered why the Congress was making such a hue and cry about it.

Nishank's press conference in Haldwani was part of the BJP's campaign to create awareness in favour of the amended Citizenship Act.

Rajghat, Feb 23: The maternal uncle of Dr Kafeel Khan, who was recently arrested for allegedly making inflammatory statements during anti-CAA protests, was shot dead in front of his house at Bankatichak in Rajghat area, police said on Sunday.

Dr Nusratullah Warsi aka Dada (55), a property dealer, was shot dead on Saturday night at about 10:45 pm and an FIR against two people was filed in this connection on a written complaint of his family members.

According to police, it appears to be a case of murder due to monetary and property dispute and they are searching for both the accused.

Dr Kafeel Khan, suspended doctor of Gorakhpur BRD Medical College, was last month arrested under charges of giving a provocative speech during a protest against the CAA and NRC at Aligarh Muslim University and was later charged with the National Security Act.

Warsi on Saturday evening had gone to his lawyer Siraj Tariq's house, a few metres away from his own house, and was returning home on foot when a man shot him in his head, killing him on the spot.

"On the written complaint of family members, case of murder against one Imammuddin and Anil Sonkar has been registered and police has initiated probe and is searching for both the accused. Police met the women in their house and is interrogating them," Circle Officer VP Singh said.

Prima facie it appears to be a case of property and money dispute, he said, adding, three teams have been constituted to investigate the case and soon the accused will be caught.

Dr Kafeel Khan had last month raised apprehension in a Mumbai court about being killed in an "encounter" by the Uttar Pradesh police after claiming that he had been "falsely" implicated in the case by them.

The paediatrician had come to the limelight in 2017 when a controversy broke out after the death of over 60 children in less than a week at the BRD Medical College in Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh, where he was posted.
