Papasanipalli (A.P.), November 18: “People are more powerful than governments,” said Myanmar’s pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi. Turning anxiously to her translator, the Nobel laureate added: “Please explain this to them.”

These were Ms. Suu Kyi’s words to workers under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme with whom she interacted at Govindapuram village, standing on the bund of a deep hole they were digging.

Indeed, if there was one running theme in her whirlwind visit to various developmental works in Madakasira mandal in Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh, it was her deep concern for people’s empowerment, with women’s emancipation in particular being a constant highlight.

Speaking to the press later, she said: “I would like to see more women on the forefront of the empowerment of the people of India.” She said “economic power by itself cannot necessarily get rid of gender discrimination, but certainly it is a step in the right direction.”

Be it when she heard officials making a PowerPoint presentation on the MGNREGS’ success or interacting with members of a self-help group (SHG) at Papasanipalli, Ms. Suu Kyi was all ears. She constantly interjected to raise questions and clear her doubts.

Her questions ranged from whether whistleblowers who help with the social audit process get enough protection to whether the MGNREGS workers were happy with 100 days of assured work or if they wanted more.

The questions grew sharper when issues related to women came up. At her meeting with Muddamma, an SHG member, she turned to the three sons of the family and asked: “Do you want to marry women who go out and work?” When the embarrassed young boys nodded in affirmation, she said: “You must remember that women are equal to men.”

At an interaction with 10 members of an SHG, she wanted to know if men treated women differently after they became part of the SHG. When they replied that they had gained financial independence, she persisted: “But has the attitude of men changed?” She wanted to know from the women if their expectations of their sons and daughters were different.

In the course of her interactions through her two-hour stay in the village, she gently but firmly dealt with any attempt at silencing women or prompting them to give tutored answers. When one of the photographers at the SHG meeting tried to straighten a mike in the hands of a woman to get a better angle, she stopped him and said: “You should be gentle with women… You should take her permission before you do that.”

New Delhi, Mar 3: Delhi's Tihar Prison authorities had made all necessary preparations for the hanging of four convicts in the Nirbhaya gangrape-and-murder case which was scheduled for Tuesday, officials said Monday.

However, on Monday evening, a city court deferred the hanging till further orders.

Postponing the execution, Additional Sessions Judge Dharmender Rana said the hanging cannot be carried out pending disposal of Pawan Gupta's mercy plea before the President, observing any condemned convict must not meet his "Creator" with grievance against courts for not acting fairly on the opportunity to exhaust legal remedies.

"We had made all the necessary arrangements for the execution of the four convicts which was scheduled for Tuesday at 6 AM. Now, the execution has been postponed and we are waiting for the further order by the court," a senior jail official said.

The hanging of the four men -- Mukesh Kumar Singh (32), Vinay Kumar Sharma (26), Akshay Kumar Singh (31) and Pawan -- who are lodged in Tihar jail, was fixed for March 3 in Tihar jail on a court order.

"We had checked the ropes. Hangman was called and dummy executions were carried out," another senior jail official said.

Barring Pawan, the other three had in the previous weeks moved curative petitions and mercy pleas which were all dismissed.

The first date of execution -- January 22 -- fixed on January 7 was postponed by the court to February 1. But on January 31, the court indefinitely postponed the hanging. On February 17, the court again issued fresh date for execution of death warrants for March 3 at 6 AM.

The court in its orders observed that the four convicts cannot be hanged since a mercy plea of one or the other convict was pending.

Hyderabad, Feb 28: The Cyber Crime Police of Hyderabad has registered an FIR against social media platforms- WhatsApp, Twitter and TikTok- for allowing people to spread anti-national activities, as per a complaint filed by one S Srishailam.

Raghuveer, Additional DCP Cyber Crimes said," We have received a court referred complaint, which was filed by S Srisailam in the concerned court stating that social media platforms Whatsapp, Twitter and TikTok are allowing few people to spread anti-national activities and videos."

S Srisailam also claimed that a few people are running a campaign against the CAA on social media platforms to spread hatred which in turn is causing damage to national integrity.

"In this regard, because the complaint was referred by a court a case has been registered against Whatsapp, Twitter & TikTok under the relevant section of Indian Penal Code and IT Act and took up the investigation," the DCP added.

He also added that the police cannot take action against these platforms as they are not banned in India but can initiate action against persons who intentionally indulge in spreading hatred.

"The police are conducting the investigation and if allegations of the complainant are found to be false then we will drop the case. We had received the case one week ago," informed the DCP.
