Trinamool's no-confidence motion fails in Lok Sabha

New Delhi, November 22: The Winter Session of Parliament today got off to a stormy start with key UPA supporters Samajwadi Party (SP) and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) triggering uproar in both Houses leading to the adjournment of proceedings.

In the Lok Sabha, SP members trooped into the Well protesting the Centre’s decision to cap the subsidy on cooking gas, while BSP members were in the Well demanding dismissal of the Akhilesh Yadav government in Uttar Pradesh on the ground of law and order.

The no-confidence motion moved by Trinamool Congress over FDI was disallowed in Lok Sabha. Trinamool's move was supported only by BJD and lacked requisite numbers.

Some BJP members were heard saying that SP and BSP were helping the government through their protests.

Members of the Trinamool Congress were on their feet waving some letters.

Some members belonging to Left parties were also seen in the aisle trying to raise certain issues.

Leader of the Opposition Sushma Swaraj was seen on her feet trying to draw attention of Speaker Meira Kumar to, what she termed as, insult of Parliament by going ahead with the decision on FDI.

Earlier, the Speaker read out obituary references to former members and Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray who passed away during the inter-session period.

Amid uproar, she adjourned the House for the day.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh introduced the ministers elevated or inducted in the recent Cabinet reshuffle.

As Mayawati (BSP) raised the issue of reservation to SC/ST in promotions, her party colleagues led by Brajesh Pathak trooped into the Well shouting slogans demanding reservation.

M. Venkaiah Naidu (BJP) also raised some issue but could not be heard in the din.

Chairman Hamid Ansari tried to restore order but as members were unrelenting he adjourned the House for the day.

Idukki, Aug 8: Nine more bodies have been recovered from the landslide ravaged Pettimudi near Munnar in Idukki on Saturday. With this the death toll in the tragedy reached 26. Around 40 are feared to be still trapped under the debris or washed away.

The rescue operation by NDRF and Fire and Rescue Services that was stopped by Friday evening due to poor light and bad weather resumed by Saturday morning.

Horrifying scene prevailed in the area as relatives of the missing people screamed around in search of their beloved ones. As it is nearly 48 hours since the incident happened, the chances of recovering missing persons alive from the debris is becoming bleak. Three of the bodies recovered on Saturday could not be identified till evening.

Kerala Revenue Minster E Chandrasekharan, who visited the area on Saturday, said that search operation would be carried out until all the missing are recovered.

It was by around 11.30 pm on Thursday that landslide had hit the Nayamakkad estate of Kannan Devan Hills and Plantations. Settlement clusters of plantation workers where 83 persons were staying were reduced to debris as the huge rocks came bulldozing. Five of the residents were reported to be not in the spot while the mishap occured.

Meanwhile, heavy rains led to floods at many parts of the state. Red alert has been issued at Idukki, Malappuram and Wayanad districts for Sunday also. A total of 11,446 persons of 3,530 families were shifted to relief camps across the state, of which major chunk is at Wayanad.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that water level at most dams is increasing swiftly.

New Delhi, Jan 31: Nirbhaya's mother Asha Devi on Friday said she will continue her fight till the convicts in the 2012 gangrape and murder case are hanged, shortly after a Delhi court postponed the execution of death warrants till further order.

Devi told reporters her "hopes are dashed" but she will continue her fight.

"These convicts have no right to live. We keep getting disappointed by the system. I will continue my fight till the convicts are hanged," she said.

A Delhi court postponed the execution of death warrants of the four convicts in the Nirbhaya gangrape and murder case till further order.

Additional sessions judge Dharmender Rana passed the order on a plea by the convicts seeking a stay on their execution on Saturday, February 1.

Devi said because of the loopholes in law the "criminals' lawyers had the audacity to challenge me in court that they will not be hanged".

The black warrants for execution of the death sentence against Pawan Gupta, Vinay Kumar Sharma, Akshay Kumar and Mukesh Kumar Singh, were issued on January 17.

A 23-year-old physiotherapy intern who came to be known as "Nirbhaya" (the fearless one) was gangraped and savagely assaulted on the night of December 16, 2012, in a moving bus in South Delhi. She died of her injuries a fortnight later in a Singapore hospital.

Jan 30: BJP leader and West Bengal party head, Dilip Ghosh has yet again made a controversial statement. He said that one has to go to jail in order to gain respect or become a political leader.

"You will not be a leader if you don't go to jail, if Police don't take you, then you must go there yourself. If they don't give you any scope, you do something to go to jail, only then will people respect you. There is no place for soft people in politics," ANI quoted Ghosh as saying.

Earlier, Ghosh had triggered a controversy by saying that anti-CAA protestors in Assam and Uttar Pradesh were shot dead "like dogs", and similar punishment should be given to protestors in Bengal.
