India, China favour joint economic strategy

New Delhi, November 27: Displaying enhanced trust, India and China on Monday formulated an economic strategy for increasing trade and ensuring development and economic growth amid global economic slowdown.

The planning commissions of the two Asian majors signed as many as 11 MoUs worth $5 billion (Rs. 27,865 crore) allowing market access to financial institutions in either country to boost investment and expand commercial operations.

The Second India-China Strategic Economic Dialogue between the Planning Commission of India and the National Development and Reform Commission of China successfully deliberated on a host of issues for “greater cooperation at the global level, strengthening communication on macroeconomic policies, deepening and expanding trade and investment and promoting bilateral cooperation in the financial and infrastructure sectors.”

Deputy Chairman of Planning Commission Montek Singh Ahluwalia and his Chinese counterpart Zhang Ping discussed the outcomes of the working groups on policy coordination, infrastructure, energy, environment protection and high-technology set up at the first dialogue held in Beijing in September 2011.

The two sides decided to increase their cooperation to cope with the global situation and pursue common interests in international monetary and financial systems; stabilise the volatility in global commodity markets; work towards sustainable development and climate change goals; and ensure food and energy security.

Concerned over the declining global growth trends and demand, the two countries decided to jointly strive to maintain continued economic growth through a slew of agreed measures.

For expanding trade and investment, the thrust would be on an open trade regime by removing market barriers, enhancing business exchanges and improving transportation links, Mr. Ahluwalia told reporters.

Bilateral trade would be enhanced from $74 billion to $100 billion, Mr. Ahluwalia said, adding that both were working to make it more balanced.

The two countries also agreed for greater financial cooperation by allowing financial institutions to set up operations in either country and expanding commercial operations and support enterprises.

They also agreed on conducting joint studies on issues of mutual interest focusing on benefits of best practices and information exchanges and skills development, among other sectors.

New Delhi, Jul 30: Even as COVID-19 cases continue to surge in various parts of India, more than 1 million people have recovered and discharged till now, informed Rajesh Bhushan, Secretary, Ministry of Health, here on Thursday.

"More than 1 million people have recovered from COVID-19 in the country. This landmark recovery has been achieved because of the selfless work and dedication of our doctors, nurses and frontline workers," Bhushan said at a press conference.

Giving the number of cured persons, Bhushan said, "More than 1,020,000 patients have recovered. They have been discharged. It is a great achievement."

He said, "The recovery rate has shown positive trends. It was 7.85 per cent in April and today it is 64.4 per cent, which is another heartening news which tells us that whatever battle is put by the Union government in collaboration with state governments is showing results."

"Sixteen states of the country have a recovery rate that is more than the national average. Of these, Delhi has a recovery rate of 88 per cent, Ladakh 80 per cent, Haryana 78 per cent, Assam 76 per cent, Telangana 74 per cent, Tamil Nadu & Gujarat 73 per cent, Rajasthan 70 per cent, Madhya Pradesh 69 per cent and Goa 68 per cent," Bhushan said.

He said effective clinical management lead to a decrease in case fatality rate. In June it was 3.33 per cent and now 2.21 per cent.

Bhushan said the case fatality rate in India today is 2.21 per cent and it's among the lowest in the world. Twenty-four states and Union Territories have lesser fatality rate than that of the country.

Herd immunity in a country of the size and population of India can not be a strategic option. It can only be achieved through immunisation.

"Over 18,190,000 tests have been conducted in the country including RT-PCR and rapid antigen tests. There has been a week-on-week increase in average tests per day. India is conducting 324 test per 10 lakhs population per day," Bhushan said.

He added, three vaccine candidates, are in phase 3 clinical trial. These three are in the US, UK and China. In India, two indigenously developed vaccine candidates are in phase I and II of clinical trials. 

Trial of the first vaccine involves 1,150 subjects at eight sites, second on 1,000 subjects at five sites.

New Delhi, Jan 15: The Delhi government Wednesday told the high court that execution of the death row convicts in the Nirbhaya gangrape and murder case will not take place on January 22 as a mercy plea has been filed by one of them.

The four convicts -- Vinay Sharma (26), Mukesh Kumar (32), Akshay Kumar Singh (31) and Pawan Gupta (25) -- are to be hanged on January 22 at 7 am in Tihar jail. A Delhi court had issued their death warrants on January 7.

Justices Manmohan and Sangita Dhingra Sehgal were told by the Delhi government and the Centre that the petition filed by convict Mukesh, challenging his death warrant, was premature.

The Delhi government and the prison authorities informed the court that under the rules, it will have to wait for the mercy plea to be decided before executing the death warrant.

They also said that none of the four convicts can be executed on January 22 unless the present mercy plea is decided.

The Supreme Court had on Tuesday dismissed the curative pleas of Mukesh and Vinay.

The mercy plea hearing began Wednesday morning and will continue in the afternoon.

New Delhi, Feb 13: The BJP's Amit Shah today said statements like "goli maaro" and "Indo-Pak match" should not have been made by BJP leaders ahead of the Delhi elections.

The BJP may have suffered in the elections because of hate statements made by party leaders, he said, reported news agency Press Trust of India.

The party, he said, had distanced itself from such remarks.
