KJP founder-prez alleges threat to life from BSY

Chennai, Feb 7: Founder-president of Karnataka Janata Party (KJP) Padmanabha Prasanna Kumar on Wednesday disclosed here that he was seeking political refuge in Tamil Nadu owing to “threats to me and my family members” from former Karnataka chief minister B S Yeddyurappa.

Yeddyurappa, on quitting the BJP, was admitted into KJP after he agreed to share all the posts in the new party “with our already existing members on a 50-50 ratio,” but the former BJP leader reneged on his promise and “has hijacked my party (KJP),” Kumar told a news conference in Chennai.

Charging Yeddyurappa with sidelining all the original KJP members, including himself, Kumar said they did not agree with the former chief minister’s attempt to topple the Jagadish Shettar-led BJP government with just a few months to go for the Assembly elections. “Any such move would have brought a bad name to the KJP just before the elections,” Kumar said.

These developments led to the expulsion of Yeddyurappa from KJP’s primary membership recently, he said.

Stating that he had conveyed the decision of the KJP’s Emergency Executive Committee meeting held in Bangalore on December 20, 2012, to the Election Commission, duly informing it that Yeddyurappa had been removed as the State president of KJP, Kumar said since then he had been receiving threat calls.

“Without personal security, I cannot move around in Karnataka and hence I have come to Chennai for political asylum and will meet Chief Minister J Jayalalitha in this regard,” he said.

“I am still the president of KJP,” he said, adding, he chose Tamil Nadu for political asylum as both states had long-standing ties as part of the erstwhile Madras Presidency.

Kumar said he had also written to the President of India, the Union Home Minister and the Karnataka Governor, explaining his predicament.

“When Yeddyurappa left the BJP, he was in need of a party; after we accommodated him, in the subsequent conventions at Haveri, Bangalore and Mysore, we (KJP) members were totally sidelined,” said Kumar and added that he fell prey to Yeddyurappa’s false assurances.

New Delhi, Feb 17: Two alleged criminals were killed in an exchange of fire with the Special Cell of Delhi Police at Pul Pehlad Pur area in New Delhi on Monday morning, officials said.

The encounter took place around 5 am, they said.

Raja Qureshi and Ramesh Bahadur, who were injured during the encounter, were rushed to a nearby hospital, where they were declared brought dead by doctors, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) P S Kushwah said.

According to police, the two men were involved in multiple cases of murder and robbery.

Amaravati, Jan 21: Telugu Desam Party president N Chandrababu Naidu and at least 17 MLAs of his party were taken in police custody late on Monday as they tried to conduct a foot march from the state assembly to nearby Mandadam village in violation of prohibitory orders.

TDP leaders started off on the march after staging a sit-in near the assembly main entrance following the suspension of 17 MLAs from the House for the day.

They were protesting the AP Decentralisation and Inclusive Development of All Regions Bill, 2020, that was passed by the assembly, enabling the establishment of three capitals for the state.

The TDP leaders were taken to the Mangalagiri police station.

Meanwhile, tensions prevailed at the Jana Sena Party headquarters at Mangalagiri as police prevented its president Pawan Kalyan from proceeding to the Amaravati region to speak to protesters fighting for the retention of only one capital for the state.

DIG Kanti Rana Tata and other senior police officials reached the Sena office and blocked the exit of Kalyan and political affairs committee chairman Nadendla Manohar, resulting in an argument.

Kalyan asked how could police impose restrictions within his own office.

Scores of Sena workers gathered outside the office even as a large posse of police was posted to thwart Kalyan and other leaders' plans.

Ayodhya,  Aug 4: Various religious ceremonies have been conducted for the past 108 days by saints in Ayodhya and Prime Minister Narendra Modi will take part in `muhurat puja' at 12.44 pm on Wednesday as part of 'bhoomi pujan' for construction of a grand Ram temple.

PM Modi will arrive at 12:30 pm at the Ramjanmbhoomi and take part in various prayers including the main "bhoomi pujan".

Govind Giriji Maharaj, treasurer of Shri Ramjanmbhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, said that the religious ceremonies will begin from 8:30 am in the morning and will continue till 12:30 pm.

"The Prime Minister will arrive at 12:30 pm and he will offer `puja' for 15 minutes and take 'sankalp'. First Lord Ganesh will be worshipped then he will offer prayers of eight shilas. Some prayers at shilas we have conducted already," Giri told said.

"The muhrat of pooja is at 12: 44 pm. He will say words 'prathisthapayami' and it is crucial to be done in that muhrat," he said.

Elaborating on the rituals to be performed tomorrow by the Prime Minister, the trust member said that most important is `Kurm Shila' .

"The most important is Kurm Shila - this is right beneath the place where Ram Lalla will be seated. It is this ceremony that we are conducting tomorrow. A cone of Bakul tree wood will be kept in ceremony. This isn't an ordinary cone, it is made of various metals including gold and silver. 

A lotus with nine gems too will be part of pujan which will be offered to this cone by the Prime Minister," he said.

"These are intrinsic to main bhumi pujan. The first religious ceremony was of Devi Kali. There are two devi kalis here, `choti' and `badi'. She is kuldevi, family's goddess of Sita. Today we held Ramarchan ceremony," said Giri.

The Vedic pundits who are involved in religious ceremonies have come from Delhi, Mathura and Kashi.

Asked about the absence of Nepal's religious head of Janaki Mandir, he said that there are many, including 20 religious heads, who would not able to come because they can't leave their seat in Chaturmas.

On the design of temple, Giri said, the old design will remain as it is except a rise in height.

"The structure has become popular and we will keep it. Keeping in mind the modernisation of architecture, we have raised height from 128 feet to 161 feet and instead of three peaks we will have five peaks," he said.

Kanchi Pithadhishvar Maharaj has sent silver coins as souvenirs for every sadhu participating in it, Giri said.

Invitations have been sent to 175 people, including 135 saints of 35 religious organisations to attend the foundation stone-laying ceremony of Ram temple.

The construction of Ram temple will begin in Ayodhya after the ceremony to lay the foundation stone.
