US may have forced Ben Affleck to make 'Argo': Top Iranian leader

New Delhi, Mar 1: Despite the verve with which it captured the dramatic escape of six Americans from the Canadian embassy during the Iranian revolution - culminating in an Oscar for best picture this year - Argo is perhaps no more than just another American red rag for the Iranians.

The chairman of Iran's Parliament and one of the key politicians in the country, Ali Larijani, said on Thursday that he didn't like movies made by "way of order" suggesting that American authorities may have forced Ben Affleck and his team to make the movie.

"I have not seen the movie and so I have no reason to congratulate Affleck," said Larijani, who is leading a Parliamentary delegation to India. He was asked if he would like to congratulate Affleck for making a movie about Iran.

"What I don't like though are movies which are made by way of order from others. I did notice Michelle Obama saying the Oscar goes to...and then I got the message," added Larijani, who is tipped to be one of the candidates for presidential elections later this year. The movie has received some criticism for over dramatizing the escape by showing Iranian Revolutionary Guards on hot pursuit of diplomats carrying guns in their hands.

Taking another swipe at the US, Larijani said that some countries wanted to control the progress of emerging countries by "dominating energy sources".

Asked about the issue of payments by India to Iran for its oil imports, Larijani said the two countries had discussed the issue at length and that there were "good results". He refused to elaborate though. Iran had earlier agreed to accept 45% of the payment in rupees with the remaining being routed through Turkey's Halkbank. The bank has now stopped payment because of tougher sanctions effective February 6. On the situation in Afghanistan, Larijani said the country was facing problems faced by terrorists and occupying forces.

"And these are interrelated. There are also some countries whose intelligence agencies are backing terrorists there," he said. He did not name Pakistan though and, in fact, when questioned by a foreign journalist if he meant Pakistan, Larijani shot back saying he meant only the US and the UK.

Kochi, Jan 11: Two of the four illegal apartment complexes were brought down by controlled implosion here on Saturday.

However, the other two apartments-- Golden Kayaloram and Jain Coral-- will be demolished on Sunday.

The demolition of the first building Holy Faith H2O, slated to be carried out at 11 am, was delayed by 18 minutes while the twin towers of Alfa Serene, which is surrounded by 36 houses, were brought down at 11.43 am.

As per authorities, as many as 343 kgs of explosives were used for the demolition of twin towers of Alfa Serene, which had 80 apartments and 16 floors each.

Section 144 has been imposed within a 200-metre radius of the complexes on Saturday and Sunday. Moreover, traffic has been halted on land, water and air in the evacuation zone during the process.

There are concerns that some concrete pieces of the second tower of the building may have fallen into the lake nearby. It is yet to be estimated if the debris or concrete pieces have affected the buildings nearby.

The four apartment complexes in Maradu were ordered to be demolished by the Supreme Court for violating the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) norms.

Jun 5: Meerut Police on Thursday claimed that around 13,500 mobile phones in the country are running on the same IMEI, the number used to identify the device.

A case of fraud has been registered against the mobile phone manufacturing company and its service center, the police said.

The matter surfaced, after police personnel gave his mobile phone to the staff at cybercrime cell for examination, as the new phone was not working properly despite being repaired, Meerut SP (city) Akhilesh N Singh said.

The cyber cell found that around 13,500 other mobile phones are also running on the same International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) as that of the police personnel's phone, the superintendent of police said.

He said the matter is a serious security issue.

Prima facie it appears to be negligence on part of the mobile phone company and criminals can use it to their advantage, Singh said.

He said a case has been registered under relevant sections of the law at a Medical police station and a team of experts has been called to look into the matter.
