Made-in-India label poses challenge for companies

Made_in_IndiaMumbai, Mar 16: As Indian companies look to expand their footprint globally, and multinationals eye reverse innovations out of India, a certain provenance paradox appears to be posing a new challenge in this journey.

It's to do with the stereotypes consumers develop about products made in their country of origin. Consumers generally associate certain geographies with the product category. For instance, the best wine comes from France or the best chocolate comes from Switzerland. That in short is the provenance paradox.

Why this is becoming a major marketing and branding challenge for the next decade? Multinationals are increasingly looking at India for reverse innovation, while Indian groups are gunning to establish their presence in developed markets. But emerging markets are said to be developing faster than the stereotypes are eroding.

The concern is whether innovations emerging out of a developing market could get restricted to that zone alone. "Multinationals today are allocating resources to emerging markets to spur innovations out of emerging markets. But emerging market innovations for emerging markets is different while innovations from emerging markets to developed markets is a different ballgame," said Rohit Deshpande, a Sebastin S Kresge professor of marketing at Harvard Business School, who authored a paper on the provenance paradox.

Companies from emerging markets have had a hard time in the past establishing their brands in developed markets. "Typically, brands with labels from emerging markets such as India, Brazil, China have not got the kind of acceptability that brands from the developed markets have. The only brands which have perhaps managed to penetrate the developed markets are from markets like Japan and Korea — Sony, Samsung and LG. Usually, brands were created in emerging markets for emerging markets. Indian companies have realized how hard it is to establish a global brand," said Deshpande.

Multinationals, however, do not believe that the provenance paradox could become a major hurdle in their path of reverse innovation. According to Satyaki Ghosh, director, consumer products, L'Oreal India, the brand image is distinctly French and its brands are known for their quality and, hence, its Indian innovations are also seen in the same light.

"As a brand marketer, one's first loyalty is to the brand DNA and then one tries to get it closer to the local consumer. So, local innovation can still be a 360 degree one, with relevant formula for Indian consumers and the communication can be with Indian insight but the affinity of the brand still remains very French," said Ghosh.

Hindustan Unilever, on the other hand, has only recently started exporting Pureit water purifier, which is an Indian innovation, to Mexico and Brazil. How would the made-in-India tag play out for the brand when it enters a developed market such as Germany? "We do not position our brands from the country or origin. That's quite deliberate because we are a multinational. As far as we are concerned, it is about the product and the benefit it delivers," said Keith Weed, chief marketing and communications officer, Unilever.

Indian groups such as the Tatas have acquired global brands, which obviates the provenance paradox challenge altogether. A Tetley tea or a Jaguar Land Rover would be as well accepted by consumers in developed markets as in

developing markets. But acquisitions merely obscure the problem, they do not dissolve the existence of a provenance paradox.

"There is no magic formula or a shortcut to overcome the provenance paradox. It takes time and persistent effort — the Japanese have showed us that it is possible to overcome this issue; the Koreans are now doing the same. Indian companies can follow the example set by brands from these two countries. It is a question of focus — choosing the right segments to compete in and achieving world-class quality/excellence levels in the products/services being offered — sustained effort and time," said S P Shukla, president, group strategy and chief brand officer, Mahindra Group.

The problem relates to not much efforts put in by Indian companies to promote their corporate brands. "Infosys developed the global delivery model which is today being used by a number of other companies. Similarly, there is reverse innovation on learning. Many students are interested in starting their careers in India. The heroic deeds displayed by the Taj staff on 26/11 revealed the unique talent management processes at Taj which recruits people for their attitude and not for their grades. These are some examples that show that Indian companies need to promote their innovations globally so as to shed the image attached to the 'made in India' tag,'' said Deshpande.

The Mahindra Group attempted it when it provided complete IT support for the 2010 FIFA World cup.

Stereotypes regarding the country of origin, said Wilfried Aulbur, managing partner, Roland Berger Strategy Consultants, can be surmounted by having adequate products. Experts believe the challenge for Indian companies is to go by past learnings and flip the coin in their favour.

Lucknow, Jul 24: The Congress in Uttar Pradesh on Friday protested against what it dubbed as deliberate and systematic deletions of chapters dealing in freedom struggle and the party's role in it from the syllabi of Classes 10 and 12 of the Secondary Education Board.

Congress leader Anugrah Narain Singh said: "The deletions effected in Class 12 syllabus clearly has political overtones. Chapters dealing with the freedom movement and the Congress role in it have been cut out. The BJP has no role of its own in the country's history and, therefore, wants that the new generations should not learn about the Congress contribution as well."

A Congress delegation submitted a memorandum to UP Eduction Board Secretary Divya Kant Shukla to demand restoration of the deleted chapters and topics.

BJP MP Rita Bahuguna Joshi accused the opposition Congress of "turning every occasion into a political opportunity during the pandemic".

"The Congress is unnecessarily making an issue out of this. Only some portions have been deleted from the syllabi due to shortening of the academic session due to the nationwide lockdown. People already know about the Congress and the cut in the syllabi is only temporary. The Congress is unnecessarily trying to create a political controversy," she said.

Prof Yogeshwar Tiwari of the History Department in the Allahabad University dubbed the changes made in the syllabi as "unfortunate". "The history is not of the Congress alone -- it is the history of the nation and every student must know about it," he said.

New Delhi, Jun 23: In an unexpected development, the pump price of diesel is all set to surpass the petrol price in the capital, making it the most expensive transport fuel for the first time in a long time.

Globally, diesel is priced slightly above petrol prices due to the very nature of the product that has a higher cost of production. But in India, due to the lopsided taxation structure, diesel attracts lesser of the tax between the two auto fuels keeping its prices lower than petrol for last several years.

Diesel is currently priced at Rs 79.40 a litre in the Capital, just 36 paise short of petrol price that is being retailed at Rs 79.76 a litre. Going by the trend of price movement in the two products for the last few days where diesel prices have consistently increased by 50-60 paise per litre while the daily increase in petrol prices have fallen to just 20 paise on Tuesday, it is set to surpass petrol prices in next few days.

"Diesel price movement is sharper in international market and if oil companies follow the global price trend, diesel prices will surpass that of petrol later this week. It will be after many years that this would happen and is expected to sustain for some time unless government changes the tax structure of the petroleum products again," said an oil sector expert from one of the big four audit and advisory firms asking not to be named.

Interestingly, even in India the base price of diesel is expensive than petrol. According to the Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), while the base price of petrol in Delhi currently comes to Rs 22.11 per litre, the same for diesel is higher at Rs 22.93 per litre (effective from June 16, 2020). This has been the case for a long time, but retail price of petrol can be higher than diesel due to central and state taxes.

What has now brought diesel prices to a whisker of petrol prices in the capital is the Delhi government's decision early May to increase the Value Added Tax on diesel from 16.75 per cent to 30 per cent and on petrol from 27 per cent to 30 per cent. This increased the retail price of diesel and petrol in Delhi by Rs 7.10 and Rs 1.67 a litre respectively. With Central taxes on the two products already reaching identical levels, the Delhi governments move hastened price parity between petrol and diesel.

Currently, the Central excise on petrol is Rs 32.98 a litre while that on diesel it is Rs 31.83 a litre. The VAT on petrol in Delhi is Rs 17.71 a litre and that on diesel is Rs 17.60 a litre.

While the movement of retail pricing is being seen with a sigh of relief by vehicle owners whose cars run on petrol, those buying the relatively expensive diesel cars are now repenting on their decision. The development is also being seen with caution by automobile companies who have spent millions to ramp up their facilities for diesel run vehicles. The expectation is that demand for such cars will now fall, causing more damage to companies where sales are already impacted due to persistent economic slowdown and now the spread of COVID-19 pandemic.

"The pricing development would push automobile companies to strategies being followed by companies in the western markets where diesel run cars are not sold on fuel pricing differential, but on overall make and quality that puts them ahead of petrol run cars," the expert quoted earlier.

Yes, but for commercial vehicle sector the rising price of diesel had not been welcomed. In fact, the commercial transport sector had time an again threatened strike against the move to raise fuel prices.

With petrol and diesel retail prices closing, the case for adultering fuel has also gone down much to the relief of vehicle owners.

New Delhi, Mar 30: The number of COVID-19 cases climbed to 1,071 in India on Monday, while the death toll rose to 29, according to the Union Health Ministry.

The number of active COVID-19 cases stood at 942, while 99 people were either cured or discharged and one had migrated, the ministry stated.

In its updated data at 10.30 am, it said two fresh deaths were reported from Maharashtra.

Thus, Maharashtra has reported the maximum number of eight COVID-19 deaths so far, followed by Gujarat (5), Karnataka (3), Madhya Pradesh (2), Delhi (2) and Jammu and Kashmir (2).

Kerala, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Bihar, West Bengal, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh have reported a death each.

The total number of 1,071 cases includes 49 foreigners.

The highest number of confirmed cases of the pandemic has been reported from Kerala (194) so far, followed by Maharashtra at 193.

The number of cases has gone up to 80 in Karnataka, while Uttar Pradesh has reported 75 cases.

The number of cases has risen to 69 in Telangana, 58 in Gujarat and 57 in Rajasthan.

Delhi has reported 53 cases, while in Tamil Nadu, the number of positive cases is 50.

Punjab has reported 38 cases, while 33 COVID-19 cases have been detected each in Haryana and Madhya Pradesh.

There are 31 cases of the contagion in Jammu and Kashmir, followed by Andhra Pradesh (19), West Bengal (19) and Ladakh (13).

Bihar has 11 cases, while nine cases have been reported from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Chandigarh has eight cases, while Chhattisgarh and Uttarakhand have reported seven cases each.

Goa has reported five coronavirus cases, while Himachal Pradesh and Odisha have reported three cases each. Puducherry, Mizoram and Manipur have reported a case each, the Health Ministry said.
