Udhagamanadalam (TN), Apr 15: A bandh called by Hindu Munnani protesting the attack on one of its leaders here by a 20-member gang for his alleged 'hate speech' evoked a mixed response today as tension prevailed in the famous hill resort town.
According to police, Manjunathan, Nilgiris District Secretary of Hindu Munnani was waylaid and attacked by a motorcycle-borne gang last night, after the reported speech against some communities. He has been admitted to the Government Hospital in Coimbatore with serious head injuries.
Protesting against the attack, the Munnani called for a bandh. Some 50 per cent of the traders responded and downed their shutters, amidst prevailing tension, with more than 1,000 police personnel drafted for security duty, they said.
Five persons, including an 18-year old boy, have been arrested for the attack, police said.
