Gold hits one-week high as Asian shares tumble

Gold_hits Singapore, May 30: Gold jumped more than a percent to a one-week high on Thursday as investors dumped equities, but the metal still risked losing its safe-haven appeal on worries the U.S. Federal Reserve could scale back its bullion-friendly bond buying programme.

The Fed's stimulus programme has pushed money into riskier assets such as commodities and stoked inflation fears, but signs of strength in the U.S. economy may prompt the central bank to slow its $85 billion-a-month buying pace.

Gold hit an intraday low around $1,388 an ounce before rallying to as high as $1,410.51, its highest since May 22, as investors shifted some money back to bullion. It stood at $1,407.52 by 0714 GMT, up about 1 percent.

"I am looking for near term rebounds towards a relatively short-term pivotal zone of $1,445 to $1,450," said Tim Riddell, head of ANZ Global Markets Research, Asia.

"However, any slippage below $1,397 would be enough to shake me out of this view."

Gold has fallen 16 percent this year, hitting a 2-year low around $1,321 in April on signs of global economic improvement and amid fears that central banks could start to curtail easy money policies.

"This is a very tricky issue. I don't think Fed chairman Ben Bernanke really wants to start tapering stimulus, but more and more policymakers are for it," said Joyce Liu, an investment analyst at Phillip Futures.

But strong premiums for gold bars in Asia have indicated jewellers and retail investors are happy to buy bullion on dips. In Singapore, supply constraints have sent premiums to all time highs at $7 to spot London prices.

"It seems that every time there's a dip, people will start coming to the market to buy," Liu said.

U.S. gold rose as high as $1,410 an ounce, its strongest since May 22.

Japanese equities led a tumble in Asian shares as the dollar slipped to fresh lows against the yen on Thursday, with investors worried about what might happen if the Fed winds back its massive stimulus programme.

Asian gold demand from April to June will reach a quarterly record as the region's bullion consumers take possession of supply freed up by selling from exchange-traded funds (ETFs), the World Gold Council said on Wednesday.

Quarantine notice outside Manmohan Singh’s house raises speculation

New Delhi, June 13: A quarantine notice pasted outside former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s 3, Motilal Nehru Place residence has raised speculations among media and political circles.

According to reports, the daughter of a domestic help who works at Singh’s residence has tested positive. She and her family, who live in the servant quarters, have been quarantined.

Singh, who has not been keeping well for some time, is slowly getting active. Congress leaders said the former Prime Minister attended a meeting of the party’s consultative committee on Thursday through video conference.

Parties should not give tickets to candidates with criminal background: ECI to SC

New Delhi, Jan 24: The Election Commission of India on Friday told the Supreme Court that its 2018 direction asking poll candidates to declare their criminal antecedents in electronic and print media has not helped curb criminalisation of politics. The poll panel suggested that instead of asking candidates to declare criminal antecedents in the media, political parties should be asked not to give tickets to candidates with criminal background.

A bench of Justices R F Nariman and S Ravindra Bhat asked the ECI to come up with a framework within one week which can help curb criminalisation of politics in nation's interest.

The top court asked the petitioner BJP leader and advocate Ashiwini Upadhyay and the poll panel to sit together and come up with suggestions which would help him in curbing criminalisation of politics.

In September 2018, a five-judge Constitution bench had unanimously held that all candidates will have to declare their criminal antecedents to the Election Commission before contesting polls and had called for a wider publicity, through print and electronic media about antecedents of candidates.

No regular international flights till June 30 in India

New Delhi, May 31: Indian aviation regulator DGCA on Saturday said the suspension of scheduled international commercial passenger flights will continue till midnight on June 30, hours after the Home Ministry announced fresh guidelines pertaining to the countrywide lockdown to contain the coronavirus pandemic.

"It is once again reiterated that foreign airlines shall be suitably informed about the opening of their operations to or from India in due course," the circular issued by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said.

Domestic passenger flight services resumed in the country from Monday after a hiatus of two months since the lockdown was announced on March 25, when all scheduled commercial passenger flights were suspended in India. International flights continue to remain suspended even now.

The Home Ministry on Saturday said 'Unlock-1' will be initiated in the country from June 8 under which the nationwide lockdown effectuated on March 25 will be relaxed to a great extent, including opening of shopping malls, restaurants and religious places, even as strict restrictions will remain in place till June 30 in the country's worst pandemic-hit areas.

International air travel shall remain suspended, the MHA order said, adding that a decision on when to resume it would be taken after making an assessment of the situation.
