Gold, silver prices tumble on weak global cues

June 20, 2013

Gold_silver_pricesNew Delhi, Jun 20: Both the precious metals, gold and silver tumbled in the national capital on Thursday on heavy sell-off by stockists, triggered by a weak trend in overseas markets.

While gold fell by Rs. 400 to Rs. 28,000 per ten grams, silver plunged by Rs. 1,500 to Rs. 43,100 per kg on poor offtake.

Traders said sentiment dampened after gold fell to the lowest in more than 2.5 years after U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S Bernanke said asset purchases may be reduced later this year as the U.S. economy recovers.

However, marketmen said, weakening rupee, which made imports costlier, cushioned the fall to some extent.

Meanwhile, rupee after touching life-time low of 60 against the dollar, was trading at 59.77, still down by 107 paise over its on Wednesday’s close of 58.70.

Gold in London, which normally sets price trend on the domestic front, dropped by 3.4 per cent to $ 1,304.75 an ounce, its lowest since September 30, 2010. Silver fell by 6.2 per cent to $ 20.08 an ounce, the cheapest since September 14, 2010.

On the domestic front, gold of 99.9 and 99.5 per cent purity plummeted by Rs. 400 each to Rs. 28,000 and Rs 27,800 per ten grams, respectively.

The yellow metal had lost Rs. 80 on Wednesday. Sovereign followed suit and declined by Rs. 200 to Rs. 24,200 per piece of eight gram.

In a similar fashion, silver ready dropped by a whopping Rs. 1,500 to Rs. 43,100 per kg and weekly-based delivery by Rs. 1,280 to Rs. 42,450 per kg. Silver coins also nosedived by Rs. 2,000 to Rs. 78,000 for buying and Rs. 79,000 for selling of 100 pieces.

New Delhi, Apr 3: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday urged people to gather together for a unique exercise on April 5 at 9 pm to show they were together in the fight against coronavirus.

"On this Sunday, April 5, we will challenge the darkness of coronavirus threat together. On April 5, at 9 pm, I need your 9 minutes. At 9 pm, turn off all the lights in your houses and light a Diya, candle, torch or flashlight for 9 minutes at your doors, or balcony," Modi said.

The Prime Minister further said that this will send out a message that nobody among the 130 crore Indians is alone in this fight against the deadly infection.

"I have one more prayer to all of you, nobody has to gather at any place during this event. Everyone will light a Diya only at their doors, windows or balconies. The Laxman Rekha of social distancing must be followed," Modi said.
Earlier, the Prime Minister had said that 130 crore Indians are together in this fight against coronavirus and praised the countrymen for following the lockdown.

"Today when crores of people are inside homes, then some of us may think how will they fight this battle against COVID-19 alone. Such questions might come up in your mind? But please remember, none of us is alone. The strength of 130 crores of Indians is with each one of us," he said.

He also expressed gratitude towards countrymen for participating in 'Janata curfew' on March 22 and said it has become "an example for all countries" today as they are following it.

In his address to the nation on March 24, the Prime Minister had announced a 21-day lockdown in the country to contain the spread of novel coronavirus, which has infected over 2,000 people in the country.

During the last "Mann Ki Baat" on COVID-19 related issue, the Prime Minister had apologised to the countrymen for taking the tough decision of enforcing complete lockdown in the nation. "My conscience says you will forgive me," he had said.

New Delhi, Apr 11: Calling upon chief ministers to popularise Aarogya Setu app, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said it will an essential tool in India's fight against coronavirus and referred to the possibility of the app being an "e-pass which could subsequently facilitate travel from one place to other".

Interacting with chief ministers through video conference, the Prime Minister mentioned how South Korea and Singapore had got success in contact tracing and said India has made its own effort through the app amid efforts to contain the spread of coronavirus.

A PMO release said that the Prime Minister spoke about popularizing the Aarogya Setu app to ensure downloads in greater numbers.

"He referred to how South Korea and Singapore got success in contact tracing. Based on those experiences, India has made its own effort through the app which will be an essential tool in India's fight against the pandemic, he said. He also referred to the possibility of the app being an e-pass which could subsequently facilitate travel from one place to another," the release said.

The Prime Minister had earlier this week urged people to download the app saying it is an important step in the fight against COVID-19 and its effectiveness will increase as more people use it.

"Aarogya Setu is an important step in our fight against COVID-19. By leveraging technology, it provides important information. As more and more people use it, it's effectiveness will increase. I urge you all to download it," he had said in a tweet.

The app launched earlier this month in public-private partnership enables people to themselves assess the risk for their catching the coronavirus infection.

The app makes its calculations based on a person's interaction with others, using Bluetooth technology, algorithms and artificial intelligence.
