Power-hungry parties trying to create instability: Sonia Gandhi

Sonia_GandhiJaipur, Jun 21: UPA chairperson and Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Thursday slammed the opposition for stalling the food security Bill and asked the people to be cautious of such parties which try to create instability in the country.

Sonia, who inaugurated a power and a water supply project in Rajasthan on Thursday, said the UPA government would have fulfilled its promise of not letting anyone go to sleep hungry through the food security Bill had it not been for the opposition who did not allow the passage of the Bill.

Addressing a gathering at Suratgarh, where she laid the foundation stone for two units of 660 MW each of power station, Sonia said, "I want to let you know that a few political parties are trying to create instability in the country. When there is political instability, developmental works are the first to be hit, progress is stalled and the poor suffer the worst. But these forces have nothing to do with development and are only hungry for power. They want to be in power at any cost. I want to caution you against such forces."

Hailing the people in the poll-bound state, she said, "Since time immemorial Rajasthan has shown the whole country the way to live with dignity. Living up to this tradition, together we have to pave the way for progress. We will keep moving forward with this resolve, honesty and hard work and give a fitting reply to those who hinder progress and developmental work in the country."

Sonia laid the foundation stone of two units of 660 MW each at Suratgarh Power Station in Sriganganagar district. These will be the seventh and eighth units of super critical thermal power station at Suratgarh slated to be completed by 2016-17 and have been built at a cost of Rs 7,920 crore.

She was accompanied by Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and Energy Minister Jitendra Singh. Later in the day, she inaugurated a Rs 2,938 crore water supply project at Jayal in Nagaur district.

New Delhi, Jan 20: Surging inflation and slowing growth are raising serious concerns about the future growth prospects of the economy and as a remedial measure the government should resolve supply-side hurdles and ensure more stringent governance norms, a report said on Monday.

According to the Dun and Bradstreet Economy forecast, even though the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) turned positive in November 2019, it is likely to remain subdued.

"Slowdown in consumption and investment along with high inflationary pressures, geopolitical issues and uncertainty over the recovery of the economic growth are likely to keep IIP subdued," the report noted.

Dun and Bradstreet expect IIP to remain around 1.5-2.0 percent during December 2019.

As per government data, industrial output grew 1.8 percent in November, turning positive after three months of contraction, on account of growth in the manufacturing sector.

On the price front, uneven rainfall along with floods in many states and geopolitical issues have led to a surge in headline inflation even as demand remains muted.

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) in December rose to about five-and-half year high of 7.35 percent from 5.54 percent in November, mainly driven by high vegetable prices.

"The sharp rise in inflation has constrained monetary policy stimulus while revenue shortfall has placed limits on the government expenditure," Dun & Bradstreet India Chief Economist Arun Singh said.

According to Singh, growth-supporting measures and deceleration in growth are likely to cause slippage in fiscal deficit target by a wider margin.

"The government should focus on taking small steps to address the slowdown; in particular, resolve the supply-side hurdles and ensure more stringent governance norms," Singh said.

Unless these concerns are addressed through a comprehensive policy framework, it will not be easy for India to clock a sustainable growth rate to become a USD 5 trillion economy, he added.

New Delhi, Aug 7: The Congress on Thursday demanded the removal of Karnataka minister KS Eshwarappa from the cabinet and his arrest for his statement that grand Krishna and Vishwanath temples would come up in Mathura and Kashi respectively after "liberating" them.

Mr Eshwarappa made the statement while reacting to Prime Minister Narendra Modi laying the foundation of the Ram temple in Ayodhya yesterday.

"By asking kar sevaks (volunteers) to launch a similar campaign, the minister (Eshwarappa) is trying to disturb peace in the society," Congress Karnataka unit chief DK Shivakumar said at a press conference in Ballari today.

"Such people should be arrested immediately, police officials should register a case against him and the Chief Minister should remove him from the cabinet,"he said.

Rural Development and Panchayat Raj minister Eshwarappa had said on Wednesday that he was of the firm opinion that "if not today, tomorrow, Mathura and Kashi temples will be liberated and grand temples would be built there."

"A place of devotion has to be built in both Kashi and Mathura. There too, grand temples have to be constructed. The mosques have to be removed from there," he said.

Mr Eshwarappa, a former BJP state president, said the centres of Hindu belief, Ayodhya, Kashi and Mathura were a kind of a symbol of "slavery" as "temples of our Rama, Krishna and Vishwanath were destroyed and mosques built."

Stating that Mr Eshwarappa is not an individual but a minister who represents the government, Mr Shivakumar on Thursday sought to know from the Chief Minister whether this was his government's stand.

New Delhi, Jun 7: The Islamic Centre of India on Saturday issued an advisory for those visiting mosques in view of the Centre’s decision to allow reopening of religious places from June 8.

Islamic Centre of India chairman Maulana Khalid Rasheed Farangi Mahali advised people above 65 years and under 10 years of age not to visit mosques and instead offer prayers at home.

He also advised against crowding in mosques, stressing that not more than five people should be present at a time and social distancing be maintained, with the ‘namazis’ using masks and keeping a distance of six feet among themselves while offering prayers.

He added that the situation would be reviewed after 15 days and if required, another advisory would be issued.
