Mumbai, Jul 16: Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray on Monday came out in support of Narendra Modi for describing himself as a patriotic Hindu. "Modi has said nothing wrong. Is it a crime to call yourself a Hindu in this country?" Uddhav asked. He was talking to mediapersons after inaugurating the party's renovated headquarters at Nariman Point.
Uddhav said that Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar should not have severed ties with the BJP after Modi's elevation as head of the BJP's poll panel.
Sena mouthpiece Saamna, too, defended Modi's remark. Slamming the Congress for practicing pseudo-secularism, Saamna reminded its readers that it was Bal Thackeray who had riled the Congress for appeasing the Muslim community for votes.
"Balasaheb was harsher. As a key player in electoral politics, Modi has to exercise certain restraint," Saamna stated.
The Sena will offer legal aid to the cops sentenced to life imprisonment in the Lakhan Bhaiyya fake encounter case, Uddhav said. "We will do all we can for the well-being of the convicted cops' families," he said. Ridiculing the food security Bill, Uddhav said the Congress's heart has begun to bleed for the poor ahead of the elections.
"Foodgrain were rotting in government godowns last year. But, the UPA did nothing to ensure that wheat, rice and pulses reached the poor. Now, they are talking of feeding the poor because they want votes," he added.
