Four killed, 12 injured in WB panchayat polls violence

Berhampore (WB), Jul 22: Four persons were killed and 12 injured as incidents of violence were reported during the fourth phase of the panchayat elections in West Bengal on Monday.

While three persons were killed and seven others injured in Murshidabad district, a 55-year-old voter was killed in CRPF firing when the voters hurled stones at a polling booth at Ratua in Malda district, officials said.

The voters at Ratua were angry as the queue was moving slowly. Four CRPF jawans were also injured in the incident, official sources said.

Panchayat polls were being held on Monday in Murshidabad, Birbhum, Malda and Nadia districts.

In Murshidabad district, a woman voter was killed when bombs were hurled at her by miscreants when she was coming out of a booth at Kajisha village in Beldanga after casting vote, police said.

Two more persons were killed in the district while making bombs at Raninagar village on Monday morning.

A CPI(M) candidate’s husband was shot at in Faridpur gram panchayat area of Jalangi in Murshidabad district. He was admitted to Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital at Berehampore in a serious condition, police said.

A Trinamool Congress supporter received bullet injuries at Islampur area in Murshidabad district.

Four persons were injured when bombs were hurled during a CPI(M)-Congress clash at Juginda area of the district, the police said.

A youth was injured at Ichakali in Jangipur area of Murshadabad district, the police said.

In Birbhum district, father of an Independent candidate was shot at Kasba near Bolpur in Birbhum district.

Hriday Ghosh, the Independent candidate, alleged that the miscreants targetted him but his father was shot at when he came to save him.

Before the polling began, two bodies were found in a paddy field in Birbhum district.

The two villagers were known as CPI(M) supporters but Dilip Ganguly, the district secretary of the party said, “We are not yet sure of their party affiliation”.

Gangster Vikas Dubey killed in police 'encounter'

Kanpur, Jul 10: Kanpur encounter main accused Vikas Dubey, who was injured in an encounter with the police, died on Friday, the police said.

"Gangster Vikas Dubey arrested for killing eight policemen is dead," confirmed the police.

According to SP Kanpur West Anil Kumar, gangster Vikas Dubey attempted to flee after the car overturned. Dubey attempted to flee by snatching pistol of the injured policemen. However, he was shot in the retaliatory firing.

"Vikas Dubey attempted to flee by snatching pistol of the injured policemen after the car overturned. Police tried to make him surrender, during which he fired at the policemen. He was injured in retaliatory firing by police. He was later rushed to the hospital," SP Kanpur West told reporters here.

Dubey, the main accused in the Kanpur encounter was arrested by the police in Ujjain on Thursday morning. He was on the run for the last six days and had come to Ujjain to offer prayers at Temple, where he was identified by a security guard at the shrine.

The gangster is the main accused in the encounter that took place in Bikru village in Chaubeypur area of Kanpur last week, in which a group of assailants allegedly opened fire on a police team, which had gone to arrest Dubey. Eight police personnel were killed in the encounter.

Dubey managed to escape after the killing. The Uttar Pradesh police launched a hunt for him and raised the bounty on him to Rs 5 lakh.

Bahua Dubey and Prabhat Mishra, close aides of the main accused, were killed in separate encounters in Etawah and Kanpur respectively, on Thursday.

The main accused's other aide Shyamu Bajpai was arrested by the Chaubeypur police following an encounter. He carried a reward of Rs 25,000, the police informed on Wednesday. Earlier the same day, Uttar Pradesh's Special Task Force (STF) gunned down Vikas Dubey's close aide Amar Dubey in Hamirpur district.

One way this is a lesson to his and his chaddi society's followers that party can take their own soldiers life for the self benefit.

Coronavirus is now spreading at the fastest pace in India

New Delhi, Jul 27: India’s coronavirus epidemic is now growing at the fastest in the world, increasing 20% over the last week to more than 14 lakh confirmed cases, according to Bloomberg’s Coronavirus Tracker.

Infections in the South Asian nation of 130 crore people have reached 14.3 lakh, including 32,771 deaths, India’s health ministry said, with daily cases close to a record 50,000 on Monday. India is only trailing the US and Brazil now in the number of confirmed infections, but its growth in new cases is the fastest.

Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka are among the states where the maximum number of daily cares are being reported. The world’s second-most populous country has been ramping up testing, with 515,472 samples taken on Sunday, according to the Indian Council of Medical Research.

Still, India and Brazil have some of the world’s lowest testing rates, with 11.8 tests and 11.93 tests per 1,000 people respectively, compared to the US with 152.98 tests per 1,000 and Russia with 184.34, according to Our World in Data, a project based at the University of Oxford in the UK.

India's COVID-19 tally reaches 12,759, death toll climbs to 420

New Delhi, Apr 16: The number of COVID-19 cases in India has reached 12,759, the Health Ministry said on Thursday.

According to the official data, India has 10,824 active cases and 1514 discharged and cured cases. Meanwhile, 420 people have died from the disease which originated in China.

Maharashtra has reported the highest number of cases in the country which stands at 2919, including 295 cured and discharged and 187 deaths.

With 1578 coronavirus cases, Delhi is in the second position of India's tally of corona infected people; followed by Tamil Nadu (1242) and Rajasthan (1023).

Kerala, which reported India's first coronavirus case, has 388 confirmed cases, including 295 cured and discharged and 187 deaths.

On the other hand, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana, that border the national capital, have 773 and 205 cases, respectively.

Chhattisgarh, Chandigarh and Pudducherry have reported 33, 21 and 7 cases respectively. While West Bengal has 231 coronavirus infected people, Odisha has confirmed 60 cases.

The newly carved union territories -- Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir--- have 17 and 300 cases, respectively.

In the Northeast, 33 people were detected positive for COVID-19 in Assam, which is the worst-affected states in the region. Six corona cases were confirmed from Meghalaya, two each from Manipur and Tripura and one from Arunachal Pradesh. Nagaland remains free from coronavirus till date, said the Ministry.
