Joe Biden seeks to boost economic ties

New Delhi, Jul 23: United States Vice-President Joe Biden arrived here on Monday, seeking to boost economic ties between the two nations and step up bilateral trade.

Biden, during his four-day visit, will discuss with political executives steps to improve relations in the four key areas of trade, energy and climate, defence and regional cooperation.

He will travel to Mumbai on Wednesday to address captains of the Indian Inc at the Bombay Stock Exchange and interact with students at IIT-Powai.

In Delhi, Biden is scheduled to hold talks with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and call on President Pranab Mukherjee, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj. Vice-President Hamid Ansari will host a dinner in his honour on Tuesday.

Biden, who arrived in the Palam Technical Area with spouse, Jill, was received by Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai. He began his tour with a visit to Gandhi Smriti Museum.

This is his first visit to India after becoming the vice-president. Biden’s trip comes a month after US Secretary of State John Kerry’s visit.

Biden’s discussions with the Indian leaders are expected to focus on enhancing economic ties, greater defence cooperation, taking forward civil nuclear cooperation and the situation in Afghanistan.

Singh is expected visit the US in September.

In a bid to boost India’s civil nuclear ties with the US, Biden is expected to utilise the visit to expedite work on commercial details of a contract between Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd and Westinghouse for setting up the first US reactor in India.

New Delhi, Mar 23: The total number of COVID-19 cases in the country rose to 390 on Monday after 30 fresh cases were reported.

The figure includes 41 foreign nationals and the seven deaths reported so far.

Gujarat, Bihar and Maharahstra reported a death each on Sunday, while four fatalities were reported earlier from Karnataka, Delhi, Maharashtra and Punjab, the Union Health Ministry said.

The total number of active COVID-19 cases across the country now stands at 359, while 24 people have been cured/discharged/migrated.

New Delhi, May 17: With the highest-ever spike of close to 5,000 cases in the past 24 hours, the COVID-19 count in India has crossed 90,000 on Sunday.

With an increase of 4,987 COVID-19 cases being reported in the last 24 hours, the count has reached 90,927, according to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

The total number of active cases in the country stands at 53,946 today, while 2,872 deaths have been recorded due to the infection so far, with one patient having migrated. 120 deaths were reported in the last 24 hours.

However, on the positive side, close to 4,000 patients have also been cured and discharged in the past 24 hours, taking the tally of cured patients to 34,108.

With 30,706 confirmed cases, Maharashtra remains the worst-affected by the infection in the country.

It is followed by Gujarat and Tamil Nadu, with 10,988 and 10,585 cases, respectively.
The national capital, with 9,333 cases, is also one of the regions which is badly affected by the infection.

New Delhi, Jan 5: Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram on Sunday sàid it was "shameful" that Sadaf Jafar, SR Darapuri and Pavan Rao were arrested by the Uttar Pradesh Police for violence without any evidence against them.

He also said that it was a shocking admission by the police that there is no evidence of their involvement.

"Sadaf Jafar, S R Darapuri and Pavan Rao Ambedkar released on bail after police ADMITTED no evidence of their involvement in violence. Shocking admission," he said on Twitter.

"If that were so, why did the police arrest them in the first place? And how did the Magistrate remand them to custody without looking at the evidence," he asked.
"The law says 'find evidence, then arrest'. The reality is 'first arrest, then search for evidence'. Shameful," Chidambaram tweeted.
