AP plunges into crisis as three ministers, 36 MLAs resign

Hyderabad/ New Delhi, Aug 2: Two days after the UPA-Cong nod for formation of separate Telangana state, Andhra Pradesh plunged into a political crisis with a spate of resignations by elected representatives of Rayalaseema and coastal Andhra regions, including three ministers.

After hours of discussions at Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy’s camp office, three Seemandhra ministers T G Venkatesh, Erasu Pratap Reddy and Ganta Srinivasa Rao submitted their resignations to their cabinet posts to the CM.

Twenty MLAs and 9 MLCs from ruling Congress and 16 MLAs from Opposition TDP also faxed their resignation letters to oppose bifurcation of the state even as mass protests rocked Rayalaseema and coastal Andhra, jointly referred to as Seemandhra.

Meanwhile in Delhi, at least three MPs from Seemandhra region were on the verge of quitting their Parliament seats.

Six members of Parliament -- Lagadapati Rajagopal, K Bapiraju, A Sai Prathap, V Arun Kumar, Anantrami Reddy and G V Harsha Kumar met late night to deliberate on the future course of action. Sources said that Rajagopal, Prathap and Reddy were on the verge of quitting. Rajagopal said the MPs would meet tomorrow forenoon to pursue the matter.

Union Ministers J D Seelam, D Purandeshwari, Killi Kruparani and M M Pallam Raju were also at the meeting AICC secretary RC Khuntia has been despatched by the Congress high command to broker peace with the agitating MPs.

A key demand of the Seemandhra leaders is that they want Hyderabad to be made a Union Territory or be made a permanent joint capital of Telangana and the residual state of Andhra Pradesh.

The group is also learnt to have made a demand to merge two districts of Anantpur and Kurnool of Rayalaseema region with Telangana.

Of the AP?MLAs who quit, K Sudhakar, Ugranarsimha Reddy, Muralikrishna, Daggubati, J C Diwakar Reddy, Adinarayana Reddy, Kamalamma and Anam Ramanarayana Reddy submitted their resignation letters to Speaker Malladi Vishnu, Usharani, Nageswar Rao, Venkat Reddy, Venkataramaiah, Kethireddy, Vellampalli Srinivas, Kothapalli, Kannababu and Vanga Geetha gave their resignations to APCC chief Botsa Satyanarayana.

MLCs Sudhakar Babu, Rudraraju and Mohammad Jani submitted their resignations to the Speaker, Paladugu, Gade V Naidu and Tippeswamy submitted to APCC chief.

Demanding that the Congress Working Committee (CWC) reverse its decision to divide the state, the Ministers and MLAs from Seemandhra threatened to join the public protests and intensify the movement for the cause of united AP.

“We are not bothered if our resignations lead to imposition of President’s rule on the state,” senior Congress MLA from coastal Andhra region, G Venkat Reddy, said.

“We have realised that our leaders understand our feelings only if there is an agitation. Because we have been peaceful and have not resorted to any agitation, the state has been divided,” former minister J C Diwakar Reddy said after a meeting of legislators from the two regions.

Ministers in dilemma

A delegation of 19 Seemandhra ministers met Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy in the evening to tender resignation letters and made it clear they would not go against the will of the people of their region.

Interestingly, the CM?also hails from Seemandhra and his strong opposition to the state’s bifurcation is well known.

However, he said he would abide by the party high command’s decision.

The Chief Minister and APCC chief along with two AICC observers Tirunavakarasu and Mr Kuntia tried to convince the angry cabinet colleagues not to precipitate the matters by quitting their posts.

However three ministers Raghuveera Reddy, Kanna Laxminarayana and C Ramachandraiah stayed away from meeting CM.

In all, 12 ministers reportedly expressed their desire to quit.

TDP’s loss

Sixteen TDP legislators mostly from Krishna, Guntur and Anantapur districts, resigned despite their party chief Nara Chandrababu Naidu supporting the bifurcation of the state.

Meanwhile, AP NGOs who have organised rallies in the state secretariat for two days, announced that they would go on indefinite strike from August 5.

PM Modi turns emotional after Dehradun woman says, 'I have seen God in you'

New Delhi, Mar 7: Prime Minister Narendra Modi turned emotional on Saturday when a woman beneficiary of his government's generic medicine programme told him that she had seen God in him.

Dehradun-resident Deepa Shah, who suffered paralysis in 2011, was interacting with the prime minister through video-conference on the occasion of Jan Aushadhi Diwas.

"I have not seen god, but I have seen God in you," she said, tears rolling down her eyes.

Modi was visibly emotional as the woman repeated her remark.

She also thanked the Uttarakhand chief minister and others who had helped her all along and said doctors had once told her that she cannot be cured.

"But on hearing your voice I have become better," she told Modi while profusely thanking the prime minister for his efforts to reduce the cost of medicines.

An emotional prime minister paused for a moment before telling her that it was her courage that had won over her disease and that she must carry on with the spirit.

Shah was expressing her plight and how she had suffered due to high cost of medicines after she suffered from paralysis in 2011 and has now started saving Rs 3,500 every month after benefitting from the government's low-cost generic medicines programme.

Soon after Shah rose to express her views, Modi asked her to sit and speak as he said she was uncomfortable while standing.

"You have defeated disease with your own will power. Your courage is your god and that same courage has given you the strength to emerge from such a big crisis. You should carry on this confidence in you," Modi told her.

He said some people still keep spreading rumours about generic medicines, going by their past experience, wondering how can medicines be available so cheap and that there must be something wrong with the medicine.

"But, by seeing you countrymen would gain confidence that there is nothing wrong in generic medicines. These medicines are not at all of inferior quality than any other medicine. These medicines have been certified by the best laboratories. These medicines are made in India and is 'Make in India' and are cheap," the prime minister said.

He said there is demand for generic medicines from India across the world and the government has made it mandatory for doctors to prescribe generic medicines to patients, unless necessary.

PM Modi to worship `Kurm Shila', pronounce 'prathisthapayami' during bhoomi pujan of Ram temple

Ayodhya, Aug 4: Various religious ceremonies have been conducted for the past 108 days by saints in Ayodhya and Prime Minister Narendra Modi will take part in `muhurat puja' at 12.44 pm on Wednesday as part of 'bhoomi pujan' for construction of a grand Ram temple.

PM Modi will arrive at 12:30 pm at the Ramjanmbhoomi and take part in various prayers including the main "bhoomi pujan".

Govind Giriji Maharaj, treasurer of Shri Ramjanmbhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, said that the religious ceremonies will begin from 8:30 am in the morning and will continue till 12:30 pm.

"The Prime Minister will arrive at 12:30 pm and he will offer `puja' for 15 minutes and take 'sankalp'. First Lord Ganesh will be worshipped then he will offer prayers of eight shilas. Some prayers at shilas we have conducted already," Giri told said.

"The muhrat of pooja is at 12: 44 pm. He will say words 'prathisthapayami' and it is crucial to be done in that muhrat," he said.

Elaborating on the rituals to be performed tomorrow by the Prime Minister, the trust member said that most important is `Kurm Shila' .

"The most important is Kurm Shila - this is right beneath the place where Ram Lalla will be seated. It is this ceremony that we are conducting tomorrow. A cone of Bakul tree wood will be kept in ceremony. This isn't an ordinary cone, it is made of various metals including gold and silver.

A lotus with nine gems too will be part of pujan which will be offered to this cone by the Prime Minister," he said.

"These are intrinsic to main bhumi pujan. The first religious ceremony was of Devi Kali. There are two devi kalis here, `choti' and `badi'. She is kuldevi, family's goddess of Sita. Today we held Ramarchan ceremony," said Giri.

The Vedic pundits who are involved in religious ceremonies have come from Delhi, Mathura and Kashi.

Asked about the absence of Nepal's religious head of Janaki Mandir, he said that there are many, including 20 religious heads, who would not able to come because they can't leave their seat in Chaturmas.

On the design of temple, Giri said, the old design will remain as it is except a rise in height.

"The structure has become popular and we will keep it. Keeping in mind the modernisation of architecture, we have raised height from 128 feet to 161 feet and instead of three peaks we will have five peaks," he said.

Kanchi Pithadhishvar Maharaj has sent silver coins as souvenirs for every sadhu participating in it, Giri said.

Invitations have been sent to 175 people, including 135 saints of 35 religious organisations to attend the foundation stone-laying ceremony of Ram temple.

The construction of Ram temple will begin in Ayodhya after the ceremony to lay the foundation stone.

5 states including Delhi, Maha, Gujarat to receive first batch of coronavirus drug ‘COVIFOR’

New Delhi, Jun 25: After the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) given its approval to manufacture and market the generic version of COVID-19 drug Remdesivir, COVIFOR, Hyderabad-based drugmaker Hetero Limited has delivered the first set of 20,000 vials in two equal lots of 10,000 each across 5 states.

The first batch, which is being marketed under the brand name of COVIFOR, was delivered to Maharashtra, Delhi, Gujarat Tamil Nadu and Hyderabad. Hetero has set a target to produce one lakh vials of the drug in two-three weeks.

The other lot would be supplied to Kolkata, Indore, Bhopal, Lucknow, Patna, Bhubaneshwar, Ranchi, Vijayawada, Cochin, Trivandrum and Goa within a week to meet the emergency requirements.

Managing director of Hetero Healthcare M Srinivasa Reddy said “the launch of Covifor in the country is a milestone in addressing public health emergencies. Through Covifor, we hope to reduce the treatment time of a patient in a hospital thereby reducing the increasing pressure on the medical infrastructure overburdened ue to accelerating COVID-19 infection rates," he said as reported by news agency.

"We are closely working with the government and the medical community to make Covifor quickly accessible to both public and private healthcare settings across the country”, Reddy said.

Covifor is a generic brand of Remdesivir which is used for the treatment of COVID-19 in adults and children hospitalised with strong symptoms of the disease. The Health Ministry had, on June 13, recommended the use of anti-viral drug Remdesivir in moderate stage of COVID-19.

Dr Reddys Laboratories and Hetero are among others which have separately entered into non-exclusive licensing agreements with the original drug-maker Gilead Sciences Inc to register, make and sell the investigational drug Remdesivir in India and other countries.

Remdesivir would be made in the company's formulation facility in Hyderabad, which has been approved by global regulatory authorities such as US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) and EU, among others, Hetero had earlier said.

The treatment first showed improvement in trials on coronavirus patients and was approved for emergency use in severely ill patients in the United States and South Korea.
