Jaganmohan Reddy to launch indefinite fast in jail from today

August 25, 2013

JaganmohanVijayawada, Aug 25: YSR Congress party chief Jaganmohan Reddy will go on indefinite fast from Sunday opposing proposed bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh.

Jagan's mother and YSR Congress honorary president Y S Vijayamma on Saturday had called off her indefinite fast after she was forcibly shifted to a hospital in Guntur in the wee hours.

Vijayamma, who began indefinite hunger strike at Guntur on August 19, called off the protest in the evening though she had vowed to continue it from the hospital.

She also announced that her son and jailed Kadapa MP Jagan Mohan Reddy will go on indefinite fast seeking "justice for Seemandhra people".

"I am ending my indefinite fast on request of Jagan," she told reporters at Gannavaram airport here while returning to Hyderabad from Guntur.

Vijayamma alongwith former TDP minister S Aruna, MLC N Raha Kumari and MLA Y Srinivas Rao, who were on hunger strike since last five days, were forcibly taken to government general hospital by police in the wee hours due to their deteriorating health.

She had vowed to continue her fast from the hospital even as both YSR Congress and TDP called for a shutdown on Saturday in Guntur town against the police action.

"Bifurcation (of Andhra Pradesh) is unfortunate and is injustice to Seemandhra region. The creation of Telangana would result into many complicated issues," she said.

Accusing Congress of taking the decision to divide the state in a haste Vijayamma, wife of former chief minister (late) Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, said various welfare and development programmes will come to a standstill if division is allowed.

"I wonder how government would be able to settle the pressing issues like sharing of water, development of irrigation projects," Vijayamma, who recently resigned as MLA from Pulivendula seat, said.

Referring to the CWC resolution, which proposed Hyderabad would be the joint capital of proposed Telangana and other regions--Rayalaseema and Andhra--for ten years, she said Seemandhra region would face the fund crunch due to such move.

She appealed to TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu to resign and lead the agitation against bifurcation.

Senior leaders of YSR Congress like Konathala Ramakrishna and Dharmana Krishna Das met Jaganmohan Reddy in Chanchalguda prison in Hyderabad and discussed the fast issue.

While maintaining that it was not against the state bifurcation per se, YSRC party has raised a protest over the manner in which the ruling Congress sought to go ahead with the process "without addressing the concerns of the people of Andhra-Rayalaseema regions".

New Delhi, May 21: The Airports Authority of India (AAI) issued a standard operating procedure (SOP) to airport operators on Wednesday for recommencement of domestic flights from May 25 onwards, saying Aarogya Setu app is not mandatory for children below 14 years of age.

"Passengers shall compulsorily walk through screening zone for thermal screening at a designated place in the city side before entering the terminal building," the AAI said in its SOP, which has been accessed by news agency.

Airport operators must make appropriate arrangements for sanitisation of a passenger's baggage before his or her entry into the terminal building, said the SOP dated May 20.

The AAI manages more than 100 airports across the country. However, major airports like Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad are managed by private companies.

Civil Aviation Minister had announced on Wednesday that domestic flight services would resume from May 25 onwards in a calibrated manner.

New Delhi, Feb 11: Votes between Hindus and Muslims were ''completely polarised'', said Congress party's Alka Lamba, as she trailed at Chandni Chowk assembly seat on Tuesday.

"I accept the result, but don't give up. Hindu-Muslim votes were completely polarised. The #Congress Party will now have to prepare for a new fight with new faces and a long struggle for the people of #Delhi. If you fight today, you will also win tomorrow," Ms. Lamba tweeted in Hindi.

As per the Election Commission (EC) website, Ms. Lamba is in third position with just 1,229 votes so far. AAP's Parlad Singh Sawhney is ahead with 23,281 votes followed by Suman Kumar Gupta of BJP.

Ms. Lamba, who had won from Chandni Chowk on an AAP ticket in the 2015 polls, was expelled from AAP last year after she joined Congress, citing differences with Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

As per the EC official trends, AAP is maintaining a strong lead on 58 seats, while the BJP is far behind at 12. Congress has failed to open its account so far.

The counting of votes for 70 seats of the Delhi Assembly began at 8 am today amid tight security.

Delhi went to polls in a single-phase on February 8. AAP, BJP, Congress are the main political parties in the fray.

New Delhi, Feb 6: DMK Lok Sabha member M K Kanimozhi on Wednesday challenged popular actor Rajinikanth to raise his voice for Muslims, saying they have "already been affected" by the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and are protesting on streets against the law.

Reacting to his statements earlier in the day in Chennai that "CAA is no threat to Muslims" and "if they face trouble I will be the first person to raise voice for them," Kanimozhi, daughter of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, told news agency that "Muslims in India have already been affected due to CAA".

"Let him (Rajinikanth) come forward and raise his voice for the affected Muslims", she said.

She said the members of the community have been protesting as the law leaves out Muslims.,

Asked whether Rajinikanth, through this pro-CAA statement, was moving closer to the BJP, the MP from Tuticorin said, "What he has said is no different from the BJP's narrative which we have been listening in parliament for the last few days".

Under CAA, members of Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi and Christian communities who came to India from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan till December 31, 2014, to escape religious persecution there will not be treated as illegal immigrants, and be given Indian citizenship.

Rajinikanth had asserted that the legislation did not pose any threat to Muslims. He wondered as to how Muslims, who chose to stay back in India following Partition will be sent out of the country. Besides, the central government had assured that Indian people will have no issues in view of CAA, he noted.

He charged that some political parties were instigating people against the CAA for their selfish interests.
