New Delhi, Aug 30: The Samajwadi Party has raised questions over the arrest of Indian Mujahideen founder Yasin Bhatkal.
"Police should ascertain whether Yasin Bhatkal's arrest is based on crime or religion," SP leader Kamaal Farooqi said in an interview on Friday.
"There have been instances in the past when cops have branded individuals as top terrorists, but have failed to prove charges against them," Farooqi said.
"There have been cases when arrests have been made solely on basis of religion. I appeal that all facts should be probed before taking action against him," he said.
"It is wrong to brand any community without first probing the details," he said, seeking a detailed and impartial probe into the activities of Yasin Bhatkal.
Farooqi's comments drew immediate reactions from other political parties, with both Congress and the BJP reacting strongly to it.
Yasin Bhatkal was arrested on Wednesday night from India-Nepal border.
He has been handed over to NIA.
