It's like Tughlaq rule: Sharad Yadav on petrol issue

New Delhi, Sept 2: Opposing any move to shut petrol pumps during night, JD(U) today hit out at the UPA government, saying its reign is akin to that of medieval Indian ruler Muhammad-bin-Tughlaq, known for his impractical schemes.sharad_yadav

"It is like Tughlak's rule. We had heard about Tughlaq's style of functioning. Now we are witnessing the same," JD(U) president Sharad Yadav said outside Parliament while reacting to suggestions on closing down petrol pumps during night to save fuel and foreign exchange.

"Instead of withdrawing subsidies on diesel vehicles, gensets at hotels and palaces, you are trying close down petrol pumps," Yadav said.

Asked what his party plans to do if the government implements the proposal, he said, "People will decide. In the democracy, voters have power to punish."

Yadav also condemned the disruption of the Lok Sabha and the high-pitch verbal duel between MPs after the suspension of nine members from the House.

"Whatever has happened in the House today is condemnable. We strongly condemn it," the JD(U) leader said.

He, however, said, "They should have been expelled on Friday itself so that today the House could have been saved from disruption."

On Asaram Bapu issue, he said "I wanted Asaram to surrender to the law. It has happened."

He also appreciated media's role for taking up the Asaram issue.

"Media raised the issue and in the process mediamen were attacked by Asaram supporters repeatedly. But despite that media continued to raise the issue. Media's role is commendable and I welcome it," Yadav said.

The Oil Ministry today said there is no proposal under consideration of the government to allow sale of petroleum products from the retail outlets only during certain hours.

New Delhi, Jun 12: Petrol price on Friday was hiked by 57 paise per litre and diesel by 59 paise a litre as oil companies adjusted retail rates - the sixth straight day of increase in rates since oil firms ended an 82-day hiatus of rate revision.

Petrol price in Delhi was hiked to Rs 74.57 per litre from Rs 74, while diesel rates were increased to Rs 72.81 a litre from Rs 72.22, according to a price notification of state oil marketing companies.

Rates have been increased across the country and vary in each state depending on the incidence of local sales tax or value added tax.

This is the sixth consecutive daily increase in rates since oil companies on Sunday restarted revising prices in line with costs, after ending an 82-day hiatus.

In six hikes, petrol price has gone up by Rs 3.31 per litre and diesel by Rs 3.42.

Kochi, Jan 21: A special court here on Tuesday sent two students, who were arrested under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) case in Kozhikode last November, to the custody of National Investigation Agency (NIA) for a day.

The NIA court ordered that the duo, who were in judicial custody till now, to be produced before it tomorrow.

In its application, the NIA had said that the accused must be interrogated on the basis of digital records and sought custody of the duo for a week.

However, the defendant argued that no new evidence had been found against the accused and therefore no custody should be granted.

During an earlier hearing, the two had told the court, "We are not Maoists. We are CPI (M) activists. The Chief Minister, who says we are Maoists, should bring proof of whom we killed and where we bombed. In the last election, we have served as CPI (M), booth agents. We are the ones who went out to vote and pasted posters for the party."

The two were charged under Sections 20 (punishment for being a member of terrorist gang or organisation), 38 (offence relating to membership of a terrorist organisation) and 39 (offence relating to support given to a terrorist organisation) of the UAPA.

Allen and Thaha, students of law and journalism respectively of Kannur University, were taken into custody by the police from Pantheerankavu in Kozhikode on November 1 last year.

New Delhi, Mar 31: The total number of coronavirus cases in India has risen to 1,397 after 146 new patients were reported in the last 24-hours, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said on Tuesday.

Of this little less than 1,400 cases, there are 1,238 active while 124 cured. The total figure also includes 35 fatalities.
