Rahul Gandhi to aam admi: Eat full roti, work for 100 days, vote for Congress

Udaipur, Sep 11: Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday accused the opposition of creating hurdles for the Food Security Bill till it was eventually passed by Parliament.

Addressing a tribal and farmers rally here in Rajasthan, Gandhi said the opposition was creating obstacles whenever the Congress-led UPA government tried to bring welfare measures. rahul_gandhi

The rally at Salumber came a day after Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi addressed a Bharatiya Janata Party rally in Jaipur.

Gandhi said: "There are two views, one of the opposition and the other of the Congress. The opposition wants that infrastructure should be developed - roads and airports should be developed, we also think alike. We say that infrastructure should always be built but people who build it should also be helped. This is the meaning of a government of common man.

"We think that the country will only progress when labourers and people contributing towards development have sufficient food to eat."

The 43-year-old said the Congress wanted to fulfil the dreams of those who toil hard.

"It does not make a difference what the opposition says, we will continue to work for the common man.

"Your fight is our fight and I want to make your dreams come true," he said.

Talking about the Food Security Bill, Gandhi said the opposition tried to stop it "but we went ahead".

"Nobody will sleep hungry. This is the guarantee," Gandhi thundered.

Parliament this month passed the ambitious National Food security Bill that aims to provide cheap food grain to two-thirds of India's 1.2 billion population.

Gandhi lauded Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot for providing free medicines to poor.

In Rajasthan, at least 600 generic medicines are provided free of cost to both Below Poverty Line and Above Poverty Line people in government hospitals.

In place of old slogan, "Aadhi roti khayenge Congress ko jitayenge", Gandhi coined a new one: "Poori roti khayenge, 100 din kaam karenge, dawaiee lenge aur Congress ko jitayenge" (Eat full roti, work for 100 days, receive free medicines and vote for Congress).

He said that India is bouquet of diverse flowers. No matter which religion, caste or creed or tribal a person is, his voice should be heard.

He added: "We can crush our personal dreams for realizing the dream of the common man."

Earlier, Gehlot highlighted various social welfare schemes launched by his government.

Assembly elections are due in Rajasthan this year.

India fared better than other countries in fight against COVID-19: PM Modi

New Delhi, Jun 27: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said that India fared much better compared to some other countries in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. The PM made this observation while delivering the inaugural address to mark the 90th birth anniversary celebrations of Reverend Dr Joseph Mar Thoma Metropolitan.

"Earlier this year, some people had predicted that the impact of the virus in India would be very severe. Due to lockdown, many initiatives have been taken by the Government and in this people-driven fight, India is much better placed than many other nations. India's recovery rate is rising," Modi said in his virtual address.

He further warned that the time was not apt to "let our guard down".

The prime minister greeted the Mar Thoma Metropolitan and wished him a "long life and best health."

"Dr Joseph Mar Thoma has devoted his life for the betterment of our society and nation. He has been particularly passionate about the removal of poverty and women empowerment," the prime minister said.

Praising the Mar Thoma Church for its contributions to the country the Prime Minister added that it has worked to bring a positive difference in the lives of people in the country in areas of healthcare and education.

"The Mar Thoma Church is closely linked with the noble ideals of Saint Thomas, the Apostle of Lord Christ. India has always been open to spiritual influences from many sources. It is with this spirit of humility that the Mar Thoma Church has worked to bring a positive difference in the lives of our fellow Indians," Modi said.

Followers of the Mar Thoma Church from India and abroad participated in the programme through video conference.

Women's college issues dress code, prohibits burqa

Patna, Jan 25: JD Women's College in Patna has issued a direction to the students to follow the prescribed dress code on the campus while stating that wearing a 'burqa' in college is prohibited.

"All students have to come to college in the prescribed dress code, every day except on Saturday. Students are prohibited from wearing 'burqa' in college", reads a notice signed by the Principal and Proctor of the college.

The college administration has also imposed a fine of Rs. 250 for violation of the norm.

I think this college management will allow girl students to wear tight jeans + t-shair and miniskirts but is not allowing a girl to cover her body. Are we in ancient days where humans had no dress to cover themselves or in the time of Nair kings in kerala who restricted ladies of low caste from covering their chest.

Kerala's strategy for containment of COVID-19 satisfactory, PCR test going on in 9 labs: KK Shailaja

Thiruvananthapuram, April 5: Kerala Health Minister KK Shailaja on Sunday said that the state's preparations for containment of COVID-19 were satisfactory and added that PCR tests were going on in nine laboratories, in which upwards of eight thousand samples have been tested so far.

"Our strategy for the containment of COVID-19 is satisfactory. We are yielding good results from our strategy for tracing, isolation, testing & treatment. PCR test is going on in 9 laboratories. We have tested more than 8000 samples so far," Shailaja told ANI here.

She further said that the state government wanted to implement Rapid test in Kerala and added that they had ample PPEs and N95 masks.

"We want to implement Rapid Test in Kerala. Yesterday, we got 2000 kits; Right now, we have sufficient PPEs and N95 masks. If the number of COVID19 cases increases in the coming weeks then we will need more equipment," Shailaja said.

Keeping up with the need of the hour, the new administrative block of Kasaragod Medical College will soon be converted into a COVID-19 hospital for providing better treatment facilities to the coronavirus patients.

A team constituting 26 doctors and medical staff of the Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram will join the efforts of converting the new administrative block into a COVID-19 Hospital in Kasaragod on Sunday.

The total number of COVID-19 positive cases rose to 3,374 in India on Sunday, as per the data provided by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
