Will consider issues raised by Rahul on return: PM

Washington, Sep 27: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said Friday the issues raised by Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi about a controversial ordinance sent to the president would be considered on his return to India. PM

"The issues raised will be considered on my return to India after due deliberations in the cabinet," said a statement issued by the prime minister after Rahul Gandhi said the ordinance that seeks to protect convicted lawmakers was "nonsense" and, in his personal opinion, "should be torn up and thrown away".

The prime minister who is in the US where he is to hold a bilateral summit meeting with President Barack Obama, said that Rahul Gandhi had written to him on the issue and also made a statement earlier.

"The Ordinance cleared by the Cabinet pertaining to the Representation of the People Act has been a matter of much public debate. The Congress vice president has also written to me on the issue and also made a statement.

The government is seized of all these developments. The issues raised will be considered on my return to India after due deliberations in the cabinet," the statement said.

New Delhi, Jan 14: One of the four Nirbhaya gang rape convicts, who are scheduled to be hanged on January 22, moved a mercy plea before President Ram Nath Kovind to set aside the death sentence issued against him.

He also moved the Delhi High Court to set aside the death warrant issued by a trial court. This hearing is scheduled for Wednesday before a bench of Justices Manmohan and Sangita Dhingra Sehgal.

The petition, filed through advocate Vrinda Grover, seeks setting aside of the January 7 order issuing the warrant of his execution.

New Delhi, Mar 27: The death toll due to COVID-19 rose to 17 in the country on Friday and the number of coronavirus cases climbed to 724, according to the Health Ministry. In its updated figures at 9.15 am, the ministry stated that four deaths were reported from Maharashtra while Gujarat had registered three deaths.

Karnataka has reported two deaths so far, while Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Bihar, Punjab, Delhi, West Bengal, Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh have reported one death each.

According to the data, the number of active COVID-19 cases in the country stood at 640, while 66 people were either cured or discharged and one had migrated. The total number of 724 cases included 47 foreign nationals, the ministry said.
