Make Modi brand ambassador for toilet project, says Shiv Sena

Mumbai, Oct 5: The Shiv Sena today said that Narendra Modi's "toilets first, temples later" remarks show that the BJP is not in touch with the views of it's prime ministerial candidate.

"Modi had to face flak on the toilet remarks. He said 'Jai Jairam' instead of 'Jai Shri Ram' which led to running around in BJP. The lesson to be learnt from this episode is that now not even the BJP knows what stance he takes," Sena's mouthpiece Saamana said here.

"The picture is that of Modi leading and BJP following. What can we say. All should participate in the toilet building work. As for the temple building work, we will see later," it said.

"Through the 'toilets first, temples later' remark, Modi put forth a courageous thought. It is surprising that Congress attacked him for that.

"In fact, Modi is saying what Jairam Ramesh said earlier...so, Congress should appoint Modi as a brand ambassador for the toilet project and give a big amount as remuneration to BJP," the editorial said.

"Earlier, when Ramesh put forth the views, BJP, VHP and the Sangh parivar criticised him. Now, BJP leaders are defending Modi.

The editorial further said that if Modi and Ramesh also announce building schools and public facilities where illegal mosques and madrasas have been built, it will be a true mantra of secularism.

"Build toilets first and temples later," Modi had said at a function organised for the youths on October 2. Modi had said he dared to say so even though his image as a Hindutva leader did not allow him.

Uddhav had recently welcomed Modi's elevation as prime ministerial candidate of the BJP, saying that after 'samudra manthan' (ocean churning), the nectar had emerged.

"Under the present circumstances, if the Congress could be defeated and Hindutva could be promoted, with the country's reins going in the hands of Modi, the Shiv Sena would wholeheartedly welcome it," Uddhav had said.

Idukki, Jun 8: Devikulam MLA S Rajendran from CPM along with supporters staged a protest by blocking the Munnar-Udumalpet interstate highway here on Monday, demanding that action to be taken to prevent wild elephants entering into human settlements and destroying properties.

The protest started at 9.30 am and demand was made that senior forest officials should give them assurance of putting an end to the problem.

A police team led by Munnar Deputy Superintendent of Police (SP) Ramesh Kumar was camping in the area.

Wild elephants from the nearby forest are frequently trespassing into Munnar and last night two elephants destroyed a vegetable shop in the town.

If it was a lone elephant that the locals nicknamed as Padayappa that used to enter the human settlement, now along with him a baby elephant is also coming to the town at night.

The locals have named the second elephant Ganeshan. Though there were instances of them destroying crops and eating from vegetable shops, till now the duo has not attacked humans.

Jan 6: Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Subramanian Swamy on Sunday said the country's economy is not showing good signs though Prime Minister Narendra Modi has manifested tremendous leadership skills in fighting terror and in social welfare projects.

The fiscal decisions of the government have not yielded the desired results, the Rajya Sabha MP said here.

"Modi had shown tremendous leadership skill in fighting terror, in several social areas, micro areas like bringing toilets to every village home. But the economy is a complex system...," he said while taking part in a discussion.

While every minister is talking about a 5 trillion dollar economy by 2024, but the current GDP growth has to be multiplied in four years to achieve that, the former Union minister said.

He said, if wages are slashed as a measure to cope with the situation, labor will become cheap but that will also cut down the people's purchasing power triggering dip in demand, closing down factories and rise in unemployment.

"This is one problem for which you really need an economist," he said.

Swamy said in jest, "I think Modi has one problem with me. Not only I am an economist but also a politician."
