10 'get off' on railway tracks, run over in Andhra

November 3, 2013
Hyderabad, Nov 3: At least 10 passengers of the Dhanbad Express, who pulled the emergency stop chain and got down near a "no-stop" station near Vizianagaram, were run over by another incoming train Saturday evening. Two persons were injured in the incident.

The incident occurred near Gotlam, 8-km from the Vizianagaram station, where the Allapuzha-Dhanbad Express has no halt but passengers returning home for Diwali pulled the chain and jumped on the track.

The Raigad-Vijayawada Express sped past within a few seconds running over the passengers who had no time to react.

East Coast Railways PRO Jayprakash Mishra said that those killed had got down illegally at a place where the train was not supposed to stop.

"They pulled the emergency chain and got down. In their hurry to cross over, they dint realise that a train was coming from the opposite direction,'' Jayprakash Mishra said.

However, the Government Railway Police at Vizianagaram said that the passengers who were run over were probably trying to get on the Dhanbad Express after their friends or relatives pulled the chain to stop the train for them.

"We believe that these passengers, who were run over, were actually trying to get on the Dhanbad Express rather than the other way round. In their hurry to get into the train they dint notice the Raigad Express that was speeding down the parallel track,'' an official said.

New Delhi, Jan 8: Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union (JNUSU) President Aishe Ghosh has filed a complaint over the violence that took place at the varsity campus on Sunday.

"I am filing this complaint for the incident in which a mob conspired and acted with common intention to assault, intimidate and attempt to murder me, and request you to register an FIR and apprehend culprits at the earliest," the complaint read.

She said that on January 5, in the afternoon, she received information from students in the campus that some students affiliated to ABVP along with other unidentified men and women had gathered with weapons like rods, sledgehammers and lathis near Ganga Bus Stop.

"I along with Nikhil Mathew (MA Labour Studies) who was also present there, were surrounded by a group of persons of that mob most of whom were wearing masks. The mob of 20-30 persons dragged me behind a car standing near the 24*7 and surrounded me and despite my pleading did not let me go and attacked me with rods while I had fallen down. I remember that one of the people was of medium height wearing a brownish-red sweatshirt with UCLA written on it. I saw his face as he was facing me and did not have a mask on and can identify him if I see him," Ghosh wrote in her complaint.

"I was attacked by the above-mentioned persons collectively and was hit on the head multiple times with iron rods. I fell to the ground and my head started bleeding, and some of them kicked me and hit me with the rod on my hand and rest of the body including my head, chest and back."

"I am attaching with this complaint a copy of the MLC which details my injuries. Nikhil Mathew tried to save me but was also hit with an iron hammer and other weapons on his head and arms. The intention of the group of men and their acts was definitely to murder me and other persons associated with me," she said.

Apr 11: India has sent back 20,473 foreigners who wanted to return to their countries following the Covid-19 global pandemic, it was revealed on Friday (April 10).

"So far, we have successfully evacuated 20,473 foreign nationals as of yesterday. This is an ongoing process," said Dammu Ravi, Coordinator on Covid-19 issues at the Ministry of External Affairs, MEA.

"This involves several countries," Ravi said during the daily government briefing on Covid-19, although he could not list the countries offhand. "We are receiving excellent cooperation from governments all over the world for this process."

Many foreigners, especially tourists, were stranded in India when domestic and international flights were abruptly cancelled last month in a bid to curb transmission of the coronavirus.

The Ministry of Tourism has asked stranded foreigners to get in touch with the government through a special portal started for the purpose, through their embassies in India and other sources to facilitate their evacuation if they wished to head home.

As of Friday evening, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare had confirmed 6,761 Covid-19 cases in India, of whom 515 patients have been cured.

There were 206 deaths reported from across the country.

Two states, Punjab and Orissa, have extended the ongoing lockdown until April 30.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will consult state chief ministers on Saturday to decide whether to extend the country-wide lockdown, which is due to end at midnight on April 14.
