Colourful annual sports day of Billawas Dubai & Northern Emirates concludes

Dubai, February 11: It was a bright and pleasant climate at Wanderers Club Sharjah where Billawas Dubai & Northern Emirates (BDNE) a registered active organization for Billawas in UAE opened up their Annual Sports Meet 2012 with lighting the torch and breaking the holy coconut while the champions of previous year Tarun Poojary & Sneha Poojary holding the torch run around the ground leading the athletes as a mark of opening of the event. An elderly lady invitee cut the ribbon and the entire crowd cheered "Jai Ho".

All dressed vibrantly in white and yellow T-Shirts all the members of BDNE and their families, friends lined up at 9.30 AM holding colourful flags including UAE National Flag when the presenter Shodhan Prasad welcomed the gathering on behalf of the Sports Committee headed by Purushottam Salian in the presence of Mohan Attavar, Satish Poojary, Suresh Amin, Vittal Poojary, Madhav Poojary, Sudhakar Poojary, Anand Bailoor, Krishna Poojary, Yogesh Salian, Yogesh Gujaran, Deepak SP, Prabhakar Poojary, Prabhakar Suvarna, Jagannath Bellare, Yathiraj, Ganesh Kotian, Jeevan Kuckian, Manoj Bolar, Nagaraj Tonse, Yogita Salian, Shymala Krishna, Chandrika Vaman, Suverna Satish, Jayashree Sudhakar, Shuba Manoj, Pramila Poojary, Manjula, Rajani and other co-ordinators who were the main backbone behind the whole day's events. Other members of the BDNE also supported wholeheartedly in making the event successful.

It was nice to see so many children in the early morning hours enthusiastically gathered in time ready to compete in all those events lined up for the event. The events started with the children below 6 years and continued throughout with age groups 6 to 10, 10 to 15, 15 to 20, 20 to30, 30 to 40, 40 to 50 and above 50 categories for 25 mtrs, 50 mts, 100 mtrs race and so on. There were ball throw, one leg race, chocolate race, discuss throw, shot put, blind fold walk and many events for children, teenagers, ladies & gents. All the events were systematically conducted with proper markings, timings and monitors.

A sumptuous buffet lunch was distributed free in the noon consisting of chicken sukka, kadle manoli, poori, rice and other vegetable dishes including sweet payasa. Chilly Willy distributed their energy drink along with dates free to all the invitees throughout the day enjoyed by all age groups. There were sandwiches and other snacks counter too.

The afternoon session started with team games like cricket ball out, human wheel barros, Kho Kho & relay which was both fun and interesting to watch. The attraction of the day was coconut fight 'Tharayi Katta' a famous traditional game of Mangaloreans very nicely conducted by the enthusiastic members of BDNE and enjoyed by all watching it in this part of the world. Also tambola 'housie' game was conducted during the lunch break.

At around 6.30 PM was the closing ceremony with prize distributions. Shodhan Prasad conducted the prize distribution ceremony calling upon the winners and senior members of BDNE and guests to hand over the prizes to the winners systematically. The whole event got concluded at around 8 PM and all the winners along with their families returned home happily.

Dubai, Aug 7: ‘Nama Tuluve’ Purushotham Salian, a staunch stalwart who always supported humanity and a strong pillar for Tuluvas in Dubai, passed away August, 4 at Al Tawam Hospital Al Ain. He was suffering from cancer and was admitted to Al Tawam Hospital Al Ain some time ago. He was on the last stage of illness which was not detected earlier.

His funeral last rites were conducted on Thursday August 7 at Jebel Ali cemetery in Hindu rites with a few of his family members present. Due to Covid pandemic, neither his body was able to be flown back to hometown nor could his two children come down to attend the funeral. However, it was said that his wish was to be cremated here in Dubai which unknowingly sometime back he whispered to one of his friends.

Purushotham had few years ago, survived a heart attack and fought back his life, though it had a minor paralytic effect on him. Even though, till recently he used to do his day-to-day work normally. He was a hard working personality and owned a readymade garment shop in Ajman and Dubai mostly taking care of clients with requirement of uniforms and coveralls. His dedication towards work was always appreciated by his clients who used to get their things delivered on time always.

He was never a publicity person and was helping the poor and needy in whatever ways he could silently. He strongly supported the community and was associated with Nama Tuluveru and Billawa community with commitment. He used to voluntarily come forward for the ground work of various functions of the community and used to be there until it was done perfectly.

Dubai, Aug 6: Non-resident Indian entrepreneur and philanthropist Dewakara Alva passed away on Thursday August 6. He was 63.

Alva, who hailed from Mangaluru, was the director of Federal Insurance Brokers LLC, Dubai and was residing in Dubai for around four decades. He was reportedly suffering from health problems for last few months. 

He was a patron of Tulu and Kannada language and culture in United Arab Emirates. He was a member of various NRI organizations including UAE Tulu Koota and UAE Bunts

Alva is survived by wife Saritha, daughter Powshali, and son Manal.

Kuwait: Friday Forum Kuwait conducted its 12th inter-school Islamic Elocution Competition at Hotel Rajadhani Palace, Khaitan on 1st January 2020. 

The competition, which was held in the senior and junior categories had participation from 15 Indian Schools across Kuwait comprising of 43 students. In the senior category, Ayisha Wafiya of Indian Community School, Khaitan bagged the first prize and Efrem Joseph of Indian Community School, Amman won the second prize. 

In the junior category, Hima Jameela of Indian Community School, Khaitan bagged the first prize and Fadhel Kandapath of Fahaheel Al Wataniya Indian School won the second prize. Nawaal Yaseen Ebrahim of Indian Community School (SR), Salmiya and Rhruthunanda of Indian Learners Own Academy, Abbasiya won the consolation prizes in senior and junior categories respectively.

This year, the event was fully conducted by the ladies wing of Friday Forum. Dr. Thasneem Amir, Ibtisam Basheer, Toast Masters Ola Rasheed, Fatma Abduhedeid, Shazia Thabassum and Marium Rangat were the judges for the competition in senior and junior categories. The event started with the Qira’at by Saneera Riyas, followed by welcome speech by Dr. Sajna Mohammed. 

The prizes were distributed to winners by Shahina Mansoor, Femitha Faseeh, Dr.Thasneem Amir, Dr. Sajna Mohammed, Zeenath Yacoub, Safna Sayam and Saneera Riyas. The Souvenir for the program - “INSPERIA 2020”- was released during the event by the chief editor Farha Abdul Rahman. The program was compered by Thanveera Noushad and the program convenor Subeana Shabeer conveyed the vote of thanks.
