Karnataka Sangha Sharjah to honour three Mangaloreans with Mayura Awards

Sharjah, May 6: Karnataka Sangha Sharjah (KSS) one of premier Kannada Association working under the auspicious of the Indian Association Sharjah, is gearing up with all preparations for Decennial Celebration which will be held on 18th May, 2012 at Holiday International Hotel, Sharjah.

Every year Karnataka Sangha Sharjah identifies the well-deserved Kannadiga in UAE who have excelled in their respective field and felicitates them with "Mayura Award" during their annual celebration. This year specially since it is a Decennial Celebration, they have come up with a well thought to identify three personalities instead of one and fortunately the selection went to representatives of three religion i.e., Walter Nandalike, Harish Sherigar & M.E. Moolur who really need no introduction as they are well known in their own field. These three great personalities will be honoured with Mayura Award during the annual celebration which will be witnessed by leaders and dignitaries from various religious faiths specially flown from India along with local guests to witness the mega event.

HARISH SHERIGAR - Entrepreneur

Harish Sherigar was born on 11th September 1966 to Appu Sherigar Karkala and Rajivi Sherigar in Mangalore, India. His parents always believed their son was destined to be an entrepreneur as they had cited his leadership qualities at a very tender age.

Born and brought up in Mangalore, he was a brilliant student and an all rounder. He won the prestigious awards at college level itself and was the president of student council in the year 1988. Since his childhood he was blessed with a melodious voice. He graduated with honours in Commerce from Gokarnanatheshwara College and did his diploma in computer applications at NIIT, Mangalore. He was always known for his melodies voice since college days.

After obtaining his degree Sherigar migrated to Muscat and worked for a reputed building material company as sales manager from 1991-1996 and gained abundant knowledge and experience in the field of building materials. At the early stages of his career itself he was a perfect combination of 'talent, perseverance, self belief, a never-give-up-attitude and of course, a bit of luck' and thus was lauded by the company management as one of the dedicated employee of the organization.

His journey towards perfection later on took him to Dubai where he joined a new company under the same designation as earlier and soon earned the confidence of the organization.

With his innovative, sharp business acumen, focused vision, professionalism and experienced vocation in the same meadow he started his own business in the year 1999 named M/s. ACME Building Material Trading LLC, a well known market listed comprehensive company in Dubai. He has been instrumental in taking this organization to its present level of growth in an amazing short span of time. Most of his employees are from Mangalore/Dakshina Kannada. He also owns a real Estate firm named Harsha Residency in his home town. Apart from all this he has a special bond with his old family business named Avinash Mosaic Tiles, in Kulshekar. He is married to Sharmila Sherigar and blessed with two children Akshatha and Anshul.

Sherigar is an active philanthropist funding numerous humanitarian projects and charities as well as being personally involved in them though he prefers to keep this aspect out of the lime light.

His larger than life persona continues to win hearts all over Dubai by organizing a charity show called Dhoom Dhamaka 2011 for the benefit of Saanidiya School for special needs & Mangala Education Trust for children with special needs. His contribution towards charity is not restricted to any one region or community.

He is always ready to extend his support to all kinds of cultural programs organized in UAE by our people from Karnataka. Recently he has elected as a President of Devadiga Sangha Dubai, his leadership is mainly focusing for Education to poor children in Karnataka.

M.E. MOOLUR - Social Service

Mohammed Ebrahim Moolur was born on 5th of July, 1953 in a place called Moolur in Uchila in one of the famous district of Udupi in Karnataka. Well known for his social service from long he is being fondly called as M.E. Moolur.

He is actively involved in Social and Cultural fields from the College days as was always Students Leader and in Cultural Activities. He has written and directed few Kannada and Tulu Dramas and wrote many Tulu and Kannada Lyrics during High School and College days. Interestingly a collection of Kannada and Tulu Lyrics were published while was mere a high school student. He is Vice President of Bearys Cultural Forum since its inception. He is also a Unit President of Al Ehsan English Academy School-DKSC , Mangalore and Chairman of Moolur Al Ehsan Women’s College Building Committee. He is also one of the Director, Vartha Bharati Kannada Daily News Paper, Mangalore. Further he is a Coordinator of Markaz Huda Women’s College, Puttur. and an active member of Tulu Social Organization called NAMA TULUVER UAE

He is being conferred with various awards few of them to name are prestigious “STAR OF THE BEARYS-2012” AWARD from Bearys Cultural Forum, UAE in view of his exemplary service towards the development of the society, “GADINADA DHWANI PRATHISHTHANA AWARD" for Social Service and Cultural Awareness and many more honors and awards in recognition of dedicated and selfless social services

Though living in Dubai since 33 years he is currently engaged in Optical & Pharmaceutical business from the last 18 years. In the course of his stay in UAE he has helped so many fellow countrymen to come to UAE by providing them Visa and helping them to securing employments.

Karnataka Sangha Sharjah announced that they will be honoring all the three great personalities during their Decennial Celebration due to be held on 18th May, 2012 at Holiday International Hotel, Sharjah and have requested all Kannadigas all over UAE to come, witness and make this event a memorable one.

WALTER NANDALIKE - Media Personality

Walter D'Souza who born on Jan 23, 1973 to the parents Sebastian Dsouza and Lilly Dsouza of Nandalike village of Belman Parish, Karkala Taluk, though has his degree in commerce had no knowledge in computers until he started daijiworld (then daijidubai.com) website in 2001.


He started Daijiworld Weekly, a print magazine under the company Daijiworld Publications Pvt Ltd in Feb 2009.


Walter, who married to Wilma, has two kids 14-year-old Cema and 10-year-old Samantha. Walter is a resident of Dubai and lives in Dubai along with his family.

Dubai, Aug 6: Non-resident Indian entrepreneur and philanthropist Dewakara Alva passed away on Thursday August 6. He was 63.

Alva, who hailed from Mangaluru, was the director of Federal Insurance Brokers LLC, Dubai and was residing in Dubai for around four decades. He was reportedly suffering from health problems for last few months. 

He was a patron of Tulu and Kannada language and culture in United Arab Emirates. He was a member of various NRI organizations including UAE Tulu Koota and UAE Bunts

Alva is survived by wife Saritha, daughter Powshali, and son Manal.

Kuwait: Eid is usually a time of family get-togethers and feasts after weeks of dawn-to-dusk fasting. But this year people celebrated at home, with virus fears dampening the holiday spirit and strict restrictions in place.

Kuwait went under full curfew before the start of Ramadan leaving people to practice fasting and Ramadan rituals at home, Even Eid al-Fitr came under full lock-down period.

As situation demanded, IMA Kuwait celebrated the Eid Get-together online via video conferencing tool, All IMA members participated joyfully in Eid Milan online gathering which was scheduled immediately after Eid prayer. Members participated and congratulated each other on the eve of Eid.

The IMA president Shamvel Parviz addressed the gathering and thanked them for joining online for this unique Eid celebration which will be remembered in history. He also advised members to be aware of conditions of neighbors, friends and family and assist them if they need help in this difficult time.

Eid al-Fitr follows weeks of fasting and marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan. Thousands of Muslims all over Kuwait followed strict guideline and performed Eid prayer at home along with their family.

As a part of social service activities IMA also distributed ration kits before start of Ramadan and during Ramadan for needy people all over Kuwait.

Mangaluru, May 22: An elderly cardiac patient from Dakshina Kannada, who was stranded in Saudi Arabia due to covid-19 lock-down, has finally reached his homeland thanks to the timely intervention by Humanity Forum Jubail and Indian Social Forum.

The elderly man hailing from Kadaba area of Dakshina Kannada was admitted to a hospital in Madinah. However, his condition continued to worsen due to lack of proper treatment. The efforts by his family members to bring him back home had not yielded results.

Meanwhile, one of the relatives of the patient, Ansari Suratkal, who happens to be a DKSC activist, brought the issue to the notice of the Karnataka unit of the Indian Social Forum in Dammam. ISF contacted Humanity Forum president Zakariya Jokatte, who helped the patient to speak directly union minister D V Sadananda Gowda in a video conference organised by coastaldigest.com.

Humanity Forum also persuaded the Indian Embassy to allow the stranded cardiac patient to fly back to India through Dammam-Bengaluru repatriation flight on May 20. 

However, it was not easy for the patient to travel from Madinah to Dammam International Airport due to lock-down and curfew. ISF not only obtained travel permission for him but also arranged vehicle. Jeddah and Riyadh units of ISF helped in obtaining permission letter in their respective places in spite of travel ban imposed by the police. Madinah unit of ISF arranged vehicle for transportation. Zakariya Jokatte bore the air ticket and other expenses of the patient.
