Hyderabad, May 10: David Warner blasted his way to an unbeaten 54-ball 109 as he steered Delhi Daredevils to a crushing nine-wicket win over laggards Deccan Chargers in a one-sided Indian Premier League match on Thursday.

Playing only in his second match this season, Warner smashed 10 fours and seven sixes in his explosive knock to help Delhi chase down a stiff target of 188 with 20 balls to spare at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium at Uppal.

The Australian dynamo shared a massive 189-run partnership for the unbroken second wicket with Naman Ojha (64 not out) as the duo sent the Deccan bowlers on a leatherhunt.

Ojha turned out to be the ideal ally for Warner as he rotated the strike with his partner initially by scoring in singles before hitting some lusty blows later in his 46-ball knock, which was studded with two fours and five sixes.

With the win on Thursday, Delhi once again jumped to the top of the table and are virtually assured of a play-off berth with 18 points from 12 matches.

Warner was on song from the beginning and he was the one who took on the bowlers initially.

He hit TP Sudhindra for a four and a six in the fourth over and followed that up with two sixes and as many fours off Ashish Reddy in the sixth to take Delhi to 64 for one at the end of first powerplay. He completed his sixth IPL half century with a single to the off side off Manpreet Gony.

The run riot continued with Ojha joining in with two consecutive sixes off Shikhar Dhawan. Delhi were well-placed at the halfway stage at 112 for one, with the asking rate below eight an over.

There was no stopping the Warner-Ojha duo as they rained in fours and sixes and by the 14th over, the asking rate was down to below six an over.

Warner brought up his century in style -- his second in the IPL -- by lifting Ankit Sharma for a six off the 52nd ball he faced.

Delhi though did not have a good start as their skipper and dangerman Virender Sehwag was out for just four in the second ball of the innings of the bowling of Shikhar Dhawan.

Sehwag was in his belligerent mood as he greeted Dhawan with a four in the first ball of the innings but this was not to be his day as he perished next ball while attempting for another big hit, with Cameron White effecting a fine diving catch at long-on region.

The first over was nonethless expensive as Warner milked two fours as Dhawan conceded 16 runs though scalping a big wicket.

Earlier, Dhawan notched up a scintillating 49-ball 84 to guide Deccan to a challenging 187 for four.

Dhawan blasted nine fours and five sixes in his innings and racked up 126 runs in 70 balls alongwith Cameron White (65) to take the home team across the 150-mark.

Openers Dhawan and Daniel Harris (19) gave Deccan a good start as the duo dealt in fours right from the start after skipper Kumar Sangakkara won the toss and elected to bat.

However, Morne Morkel struck in his second over, removing Harris as the home team slipped to 28 for one in 4.5 overs. Looking to drive a short of length delivery, Harris ended up giving a catch to Mahela Jayawardene at short cover.

First down Kumar Sangakkara was also back into the hut quickly after his miscued pull off Varun Aaron ended up in the safe hands of Shahbaz Nadeem at short mid-wicket.

Dhawan and in-form Cameron White then joined hands and brought up the fifty in eight overs.

White took little time to get going and blasted consecutive fours in the seventh over off Irfan Pathan, before paddle-sweeping Nadeem for another boundary in the next over.

Dhawan then took charge and smashed Andrew Russell over the mid-wicket, before sending him across the square-leg boundary in his next over.

The left-hander then treated Nadeem with equal disdain, blasting him for consecutive six to accumulate 15 runs off the 12th over.

Dhawan then picked up Pathan for special treatment and plundered two fours and a six to amass 16 runs of the over to not only bring up his personal fifty but also take the Chargers across the 100-mark.

White and Dhawan kept their foot on the accelerator and raised another 11 runs in the next over with the help of a couple of fours.

White then clubbed a couple of boundaries off Russell, sending him through point first and then smashing him over the point. Dhawan then pulled one more for the third boundary of the over which fetched 15 runs.

Experienced pacer Morkel was brought back into the attack to break the partnership but Dhawan once again went berserk and blasted two fours and a six to bring up the 150 in the 17th over for the Chargers.

Finally a good piece of fielding by Nadeem ended Dhawan's brilliant innings, who was found well shot of the wicket while trying to steal a second run.

White, however, continued the carnage and picked up a four and six in the last two deliveries off Pathan to pile up 13 runs of the over.

The Australian was dismissed in the last over when he tried to force Aaron out of the park. He hit seven fours and a couple of sixes in his 40-ball innings.

Sydney, Mar 29: Steve Smith's two-year leadership ban ended quietly Sunday, leaving him eligible again to captain Australia at a time of uncertainty over when international cricket will resume.

Smith was stripped of the captaincy and banned from leading Australia for two years over his involvement in the 2018 ball tampering scandal in South Africa. His sentence ended Sunday and he can again captain Australia if called upon.

Australian players were due this week to conclude a series of matches in New Zealand and, for some, to join the Indian Premier League. But it wasn't clear Sunday if the IPL will take place this year and when international matches will resume. Australia's scheduled mid-year tours to England and Bangladesh are in doubt.

Smith told Channel Nine television's Sports Sunday he is doing his best to stay mentally and physically fit, training in his home gym, going on 10 kilometer (6 mile) runs and practising the guitar.

"It's obviously not looking likely (the IPL will go ahead) at the moment," Smith said. "I think there might be some meetings over the next few days to discuss what the go is with it all.

"I'm just trying to stay physically and mentally fit and fresh and, if it goes ahead at some point, then great. And if not, there's plenty going on in the world at the moment. So just play it day by day."

It seems unlikely Smith will return to the captaincy when cricket resumes. Tim Paine is firmly established as Australia's test captain and at 35 is not immediately considering retirement. Aaron Finch has captained Australia successfully in white ball cricket.

The conclusion of Smith's ban ends the period of upheaval in Australian cricket that followed the ball tampering incident in the second test at Cape Town in 2018 when Cameron Bancroft, with the knowledge of Smith and his vice-captain David Warner, used sandpaper to change the condition of the ball.

Smith and Warner received one-year bans from international and most domestic cricket and Bancroft was banned for nine months. The scandal also resulted in the resignation of coach Darren Lehmann and the departure of Cricket Australia's chief executive, James Sutherland.

Warner remains under a career-long leadership ban.

Chennai, Jul 26: Indian Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand suffered his fifth straight defeat in the USD 150,000 Legends of Chess online tournament, going down 2-3 to Peter Leko of Hungry.

The former world champion got off to a good start and won the first game of the best-of-four contest. The next two games were drawn before Leko levelled by winning the fourth.

The Hungarian then claimed the Armageddon (a tie-breaker) to ensure Anand remain winless and at the bottom of the points table.

Anand, who is making his maiden appearance on the Magnus Carlsen Chess Tour, had earlier lost to Peter Svidler, Magnus Carlsen, Vladimir Kramnik and Anish Giri.

World no. 1 Carlsen bounced back strongly to avoid an upset, beating veteran Vasyl Ivanchuk 3-2 to stay on top.

Legends of Chess is a unique event where Carlsen, Liren, Nepomniachtchi and Giri, semifinalists at the Chessable Masters (part of the Magnus Carlsen Tour), received an automatic invite and are up against six legends aged 40-52, who have been at the top of world chess at various points in their career.

Mumbai, Mar 10: The addition of two new members, including the chairman, in the national selection committee, has not changed the panel's stance on M S Dhoni, who will "have to perform" in the upcoming IPL to be considered for T20 World Cup selection, a top BCCI official told PTI.

The Sunil Joshi-led selection panel met for the first time in Ahmedabad on Sunday to pick a rather "straightforward" squad for the three ODIs against South Africa beginning in Dharamsala on March 12.

Fit-again Hardik Pandya, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Shikhar Dhawan made their way back into the side.

Joshi's predecessor MSK Prasad had made it clear that the team has moved on from Dhoni and he has to first play to be considered for selection.

Dhoni, who has not played since the World Cup semi-final loss to New Zealand in July, will be making his highly-awaited comeback in the IPL beginning March 29.

"It was a pretty straightforward selection meeting and since Dhoni was obviously not in the reckoning this time (for South Africa series), there was no formal talk about his future," a BCCI source told PTI.

"He will be back in the reckoning only if he has a good IPL. And why only him, there are so many senior and young players who will play in the IPL. If they do well, they are ought to be considered too. So, you could see some surprise inclusions," he said.

The T20 World Cup will be played in Australia in October-November and the games India play after the IPL leading up to the mega event will also be a factor in the final squad selection.

"But the performance in the IPL could be the clincher," the source added.

Head coach Ravi Shastri too has hinted that Dhoni could be back after a good IPL but his future remains a subject of intense speculation as he has not played a game in more than seven months.

With his heir apparent Rishabh Pant not setting the world on fire and K L Rahul being groomed into a full-time wicketkeeper-batsman, Dhoni's comeback cannot be ruled out.

His countless fans will finally get to see him in action when he leads Chennai Super Kings against defending champions Mumbai Indians in the IPL opener at Wankhede Stadium on March 29.
