Consistently scoring big in big matches isn't an easy habit to inculcate. But India under-19 captain Unmukt Chand is fast proving be the one the team looks up to at big moments. Soon after cracking a century in the semifinal against Sri Lanka, the Delhi boy's calculated 121 in the under-19 Asia Cup final against Pakistan almost pulled off the match. The job, though, was only half-finished as the game ended in a thrilling tie on Sunday in Kuala Lumpur.

Chasing Pakistan's 282/9, Unmukt shared a 175-run stand with Baba Aparajith (90) for the second wicket to keep India in the hunt. After Aparajith, who dominated the partnership, was dismissed, Unmukt took over and took India closer to the target before falling off the fourth ball of the final over with three wickets and five runs remaining. While it seemed the pair's hard work would be undone, left-arm medium-pacer Rush Kalaria, who had earlier claimed 5/37, slammed a boundary off the next ball to equal scores. But he could only chip the last ball to mid-off to be caught as both teams left with something to celebrate.

Unmukt, thus, maintained his record of not losing in any event he has captained the team in. India had earlier won two quadrangular events in India and Australia under his captaincy.

Unmukt had hit a 94 and a century in the semifinal and the final respectively in the last event the colts played, the quadrangular in Australia in April this year, which shows how he responds to big challenges. A regular opener for his state team Delhi, he came down at three in Australia and then curbed his natural attacking instincts in Kuala Lumpur to bat through the innings because the middle-order was looking shaky. For those who have followed him, a strike rate in the late 70s and early 80s throughout a limited-overs tournament is hard to believe.

Often critcised for his flashy play during the last first class season — in which he failed to convert any of his starts into hundreds — Unmukt has reveled as captain of the junior national team. "I need to play a different role in this team. Being the seniormost player, I had to bat responsibly and let the middle-order play around me. That's why I modified my game," Unmukt told TOI from Kuala Lumpur after the final while adding that the team had taken the tied final in its strides. "It happens. We'd have loved to win because we lost to Pakistan by just one run in the league stage. But it's okay."

With the Under-19 World Cup a little more than a month away, the preparations have lived up to the expectations. "We have matured as a team by being together. We have learnt to adapt to different conditions. All of us have contributed in the wins. All eyes are on the World Cup now. Even in this tournament, Vijay Zol scored a superb century, allrounder Baba (Aparajith) has consistently done well and the bowlers have been great. Kalaria was superb today and the left-arm spin of Vikas Mishra has been amazing," said Unmukt who is now enjoying the leadership role.

"I am loving every bit of it. The team is really supportive. They have been pretty obedient," he said tongue-in-cheek.

Brief scores: Pakistan U-19 282/9 (Sami Aslam 134, R Kalaria 5/37) vs India U-19 282/8 (U Chand 121, B Aparajith 90; Md Nawaz 3/45)

Aurangabad, Jan 23: An FIR has been registered against three people including former cricketer Mohammed Azharuddin for allegedly duping a travel agent, Mohammad Shadab, of more than Rs 20 lakh.

However, Mohammad Azharuddin has refuted allegations and said: "I strongly rubbish the false FIR filed against me in Aurangabad. I am consulting my legal team and would be taking action as necessary."

Azharuddin's personal assistant Mujeeb lives in Augurangabad and has good relations with the travel agency of Shadab.

The travel agent alleged that Mujeeb asked him to book some flight tickets but did not pay the amount.

The police have booked the three under Section 406, 420 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code.

Hamilton, Jan 28: No one sits on the seat that Mahendra Singh Dhoni made his own in the team bus, revealed India leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal, saying that the talismanic former skipper is missed by the side.

In a video shot inside the team bus while it was on its way to Hamilton for the third T20 International against New Zealand, Chahal is seen talking to several members of the squad including Jasprit Bumrah, Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul.

Towards the end of the video, he moved to the rear of the bus and pointed to an empty seat which, he said, was the former captain's preferred spot before he went on a sabbatical last year.

"Yeh woh seat hai jahan ek legend baithate the. Mahi bhai. Abhi bhi yaha koi nahi baithata. Hum unhe bohot miss karte hai (This is the seat that used to be occupied a legend. MS Dhoni. No one sits here now. We miss him a lot)," Chahal said in the video posted on 'bcci.tv'.

The-38-year-old Dhoni has not played a competitive game since the World Cup semifinal loss to New Zealand on July 9. Earlier this month, Dhoni was dropped from the BCCI's list of centrally contracted players, raising fresh doubts on his future.

However, on the same day, Dhoni returned to training, batting fluently in the Jharkhand team nets.

Head coach Ravi Shastri has hinted that the celebrated wicketkeeper-batsman might retire from ODIs soon but will be in contention for a T20 World Cup berth provided he does well for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL.

The Indian team lead the five-match T20 series against New Zealand 2-0.

Virat Kohli's men will take on the hosts in the third T20 here on Wednesday.

Los Angeles, Feb 14: Tributes to the late Kobe Bryant, the Los Angeles Lakers legend who died last month in a helicopter crash, will play a major role in Sunday's 69th NBA All-Star Game.

This year's annual showcase of league talent will be played in Chicago and feature numerous nods to Bryant, a five-time NBA champion who also matched a league record with four NBA All-Star Game Most Valuable Player awards.

Bryant, an 18-time NBA All-Star, died at age 41 on January 26 in a crash near Los Angeles that also took the life of his 13-year-old daughter Gianna and seven others.

All-Star teams guided by LeBron James of the Lakers and Greek star Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks will compete to win each of the first three quarters, which will all start 0-0 and last 12 minutes.

At the start of the fourth quarter, the clock will be turned off and a final target score will be established by taking the leading club's cumulative score through the first three quarters and adding 24 points -- the number representing the jersey number worn by Bryant for the final 10 seasons of his NBA career.

The first team to reach the cumulative target score will win the NBA All-Star Game.

All-Star Game jerseys will also honor Bryant and his daughter.

Team Giannis players will wear jersey number 24 in tribute to Kobe while Team LeBron players will wear jersey number two, the number his daughter wore when playing youth basketball.

Both teams will wear jersey patches displaying nine stars, representing the nine people who were killed in the crash.

Academy Award-winning actress and Grammy Award-winning singer Jennifer Hudson, a Chicago native, will perform a special tribute to Bryant, his daughter and the others who were killed in the crash. Her performance will begin the night ahead of the player introductions.

James and Antetokounmpo each chose their squads from available starters and reserves voted and selected to the All-Star contest.

Team LeBron starters will include James, his Lakers teammate Anthony Davis, NBA scoring leader James Harden of Houston, Kawhi Leonard of the Los Angeles Clippers and Slovenian guard Luka Doncic of the Dallas Mavericks.

Team Giannis starters include the Greek big man, Cameroon stars Joel Embiid of Philadelphia and Pascal Siakam of Toronto and guards Kemba Walker of Boston and Trae Young of Atlanta.

A record eight All-Star Game players from outside the United States also include Frenchman Rudy Gobert of the Utah Jazz on Team Giannis and Team LeBron reserves Ben Simmons of Australia and the Philadelphia 76ers, Lithuanian Domantas Sabonis of Indiana and Serbian Nikola Jokic of Denver.
